Holley Sniper - bad o2 sensor or something more. Possibly my first real issue in 3 years?

  • Went to move the car out of the shop and had my first max lean o2 sensor reading that everyone complains about. Not sure if it’s the o2 sensor just yet.

    Good video. That 35.6 is a tell tale sign from my experience as well. This is also a reason why turning the compensation limits to 5% or 10% or something is kind of a good idea because when this happens it can't correct that much.

      Also we have tried cleaning them and whatever we can to try and get them to come back and I've never been able to save one. 🤷‍♂️

      ya, its def not actually lean. either sensor or controller. just don't have a spare sensor on hand to test if its the controller. and my 2 o2's have different plugs, so i can't just swap them. i'll order one soon to test. i've had it 3yrs now and its the first o2 i've lost if so and i've been playing with fuel lately so i probably soaked it. as for the limiting, i talk about that in one of my vids. pros and cons of each. i limit to about 5-10% down low but allow for a lot of fuel addition on the top end in case of fuel issue (fuel pump starts to go or i drop an injector since its TBI).

    Mine was doing the same thing… come to find out, the o2 sensor harness was hitting the header… it burnt the coating on a couple of the wires & was causing erratic readings when I’d drive the truck…. It would bounce form 14.7 to 39….

    I happened to notice that your iac duty cycle is just about right but your throttle says it's at 1 % I only noticed it because my cable sticks sometimes and won't let it go back to 0 unless I blip it

    • @callofgeorge
      @callofgeorge  Před 29 dny +1

      1% is fine. at 2% or more it'll cause the IAC to go into it's "hold position". the throttle blades on these 1st gen snipers are notorious for being sticky. i put an additional wind on my secondary spring (youtube videos showing how to do this). i also have a double return spring on the throttle. i've recentered my blades and adjusted the TPS. i think the next step will be pulling the sniper and polishing the bores a bit.

      @@callofgeorge yes I have been down through it with this system ! Had to replace the rings on the injectors right out of the box I bought the dual sync with it and almost immediately had issues I went through the troubleshoot with the Holley tech he said the dizzy was fine it was the ECU so I sent it to Holley and and played the waiting game only for them to send it back saying it was fine so I put it back on it started fine then started acting up again so I changed out the dual sync for the stock one and it's been running sense they told me it must be in the wiring and I'm like that's not my responsibility to fix because that's the premade harness plug and play

      most likely just the o2 going. i've had it over 3 years now i think and its the first time having issues with it. easy fix and easy to make a work around to keep driving. dont' let this video sway you from your choice. i've been more than happy with mine. i'll do a follow up video when i get the new o2 sensor. i think i may order a bosch and one of the NTK's that people swear work with the sniper..

    Mines doin something similar after heavy rain it is pegged 35.57 but every once in a while it’s coming down to close to normal than wham back crazy goin to check wiring i have a stand alone wideband that reads about normal

    • @callofgeorge
      @callofgeorge  Před rokem

      sounds like moisture is getting to wiring possible or could be the o2 having an issue like mine was. strange it's only after heavy rain. unless the sensor itself is getting moisture to it somehow.

    My unit seens to do something similar. Worked perfect for one year. But now I am at my third sensor and they all behave the same. When I turn on, my afr oscilates a lot. After 15 to 20 minutes it stops oscilating. Only them I turn on the close loop/learn to avoid corrupting my tune. I have a good one on. Have you solved yours? I am having a hard time pinpointing the problem. Thanks.

      so only once the engine warms up it stops? sounds almost like an exhaust leak being sealed up once the metal expands from the heat. i just replaced my o2 sensor and it solved my issue. 1st sensor to go bad in 3+ years.

    hi 👋🏽, I just installed the new sniper 2 on my car, she fired right up as it’s supposed to. I have the basic set up coil and distributor. Before the car was fired up it was set at 12°. I decided to change the timing now at 15° and now the rpm ramp up from 750rpm to 880rpm. I tried to change the basic idle back down and it won’t at all. Do I need to re-start the wizard again or? Any word of wisdom would really appreciate it. Crate motor sbc 350 5.7 Gen 1

    • @callofgeorge
      @callofgeorge  Před 10 měsíci

      no, you probably just need to adjust the idle screw on the throttle linkage. close it so the iac sit around 5-10%.

    Did you get this resolved? What was the fix? I am having similar symptoms but after 30 mins of driving. I was told by Holley maybe EMI/RFI. I am gunna install ferrite snaps to the wires.

    • @callofgeorge
      @callofgeorge  Před 11 měsíci +3

      i did. new o2 sensor fixed mine. died due to cranking to move the car frequently without allowing the exhaust to heat and burn off liquid fuel from the cold starts. moisture kills the o2. as for whether its "RFI", if it sticks dead lean - it's probably not.. usually interference is random. causes fluctuation. check my other video (quite long) about holley sniper tips - things i learned or something like that is the title. has info about preventing interference. ferrite are like bandaids. just like grounding everything possible. usually leads to other issues. find the source of the interference and correct that if you have it.

    • @callofgeorge
      @callofgeorge  Před rokem

      without the o2, you're just running on open-loop (strictly off the tune file) without corrections for climate/altitude/fuel pressure changes/etc. mine didn't go bad due to cheap product. i killed it by constantly cranking and moving the car in and out of the garage. didn't let the exhaust burn off excess liquid fuel from cold starts. that moisture killed the o2. you can use just the EFI though and disable fuel correction all together. you can keep the o2 for monitoring or just disconnect/remove it all together. it's not required.

      is the vehicle already tuned or have a solid tune on it? as in, was it running well before this issue? if so, unplug the o2 sensor and see if it idles/runs fine as a test. you'll probably need to clear the learn table. i wouldn't go to aggressive cam unless you have a pretty wild build. i think mines set at mild and i have a .523 lift cam (FS XE274H-10). even at mild i still had to remove fuel from the wizard tune. they naturally run rich off the tune file. you'd have to share your timing values with me (assuming timing control) for me to assess with that part. you can message me on fb if you want and i'll try to help ya out. inlude vehicle/engine info and send the tune file if you can. @@chrisb837
