      You grew up playing this version of the game and you somehow never heard of the original? That doesn't make any sense. 64 is literally in the title. That should tell you that it originally came out for the N64. As much as I like this game, I gotta agree: Making the player choose between 360-degree movement or tactile feedback in a genre that demands both is a deathblow to ANY 3d platformer. It's no wonder this version was forgotten about: There's no way in hell a D-pad or a touchscreen were ever gonna be suitable substitutes for an analog stick.

    It works reasonably well with the thumb stylus. It's not really good or anything, but it's something at least. There's also the dual control option, which was meant to be used with the stylus holding the DS in one hand. For this reason nothing is mapped to the shoulder buttons with this option. Touch control or dual control could work with the stylus using the original 3DS along with the 3DS stand included with Kid Icarus Uprising. That's with a real cartridge. The analog mod for 3DS is the definitive way to play this game. It's far better than any other option.

    • @solidzack
      @solidzack Před rokem +1

      The run bottom is the most important one and inverting the button functionality seems the best solution indeed. One could make it so that holding L+R and then pressing one of the right buttons would work like pressing the C-Buttons of the N64 controller. Also a camera mode that's essentially like always holding L (like Mario cam from the original) would be nice.
      If possible, the camera could be improved in that it understands what your intentions are and adjusts the angle accordingly (e.g. If you attempt like a 30ish degree long jump to the side it the camera pans so you can get the full momentum which you otherwise couldn't with only 45 degrees).
      The Touchscreen should be discarded entirely and only aid visually (I guess you could keep the bowser throwing mechanic in there).
      Lastly, though not a physics change, you should be able to select characters upon entering a stage (the actual characters, not the hat) without playing as Yoshi so you can always pick the one that suits your playstyle more (not like there's any reason to pick wario other than for playing as wario)

    • @ironiczombie2530
      @ironiczombie2530 Před rokem

      The solution is using the analog stick mod with the DS VC on wiiu, it maps the analog stick to the touch screen control

  • @itsasecrettoeverybody
    @itsasecrettoeverybody Před rokem +1

    I agree the lack of analogue isn't great, also agree there are changes to the physics that make hard for people who played a lot of the original.
    But it's a remake not a port, it isn't expected to things to remain exactly the same.
    The higher Mario's jump and less control over Mario on the air was done purposely to help differentiate the new characters, if they made wario's jump lower than Mario's for example they would need to rework all the maps to considerate wario's jump, so they just gave Mario a higher jump. Also they change mais lmario's air control because if I'm not mistaken Luigi is supposed to have more control on the air, probably to give Luigi more air control than Mario would feel weird to play so they gave the original air control to Luigi and they decreased Mario's.
    All those things had to be considerate. The other solution was to have every character play exactly the same and this is no fun.
    about the lack of analogue, i find that with the thumb stylus it works well, not great, but very well when you get used to it, I can even play using the normal stylus, it's not that hard when you figure out better ways to hold the DS, first use the dual hand mode and pick the stylus with the right hand, put your pinky finger on the R button and normally hold the left side with the left hand. It's not the best thing in the world but I find it to be very enjoyable. Yes I'm not as precise as I'm with the analogue but I'm around 90% precise with the touch.
    In my opinion it's a great remake. Not a better experience, but I do find it to be the more entertaining experience.
    The perfect solution would've be for Nintendo to remake the game on the Mario 3d all stars collection.

    So I did a side-by-side comparison with the written Super Mario 64 Port for the 3DS and Super Mario 64 DS with a Widescreen and analog stick mod. And while the experience for the latter is definitely enhanced and worth to replay, the port of the original definitely plays a lot more fluid (and I mean a LOT). Though I can kinda look past that in favor of the added content.
    (Update: Even with the analog control mod, it's still quite worse than the original, which after 100%-ing both now, I'd say is definitely the superior version even without the added content)
    Now one of the remaining problems that still bothers me is the character selection: Only Yoshi can switch characters upon entering a level, you cannot switch from other characters to Yoshi mid-stage and you always hear the voices of the character you chose for the overworld (which is mostly Yoshi for obvious reasons).
    If there's a patch out there for the game that allows you to select caps in the star selection screen for the other 3 characters as well and replaces the character sounds whenever a cap is picked up, *please* let me know, cause this would fix almost all the issues of this game (except for Yoshi not being playable if you entered the level with another character, though that's probably an issue that's not easy to fix)

(From what I remember) in 3d land, you can only have in 8 directions but I got used to it even tho it's just 8 directions and mario clearly could've made it move in a 360 direction because there using a Circle pad, but I guess what really kills the games controls is all the mario 64 jank that's in it for example the 180 turn mario sometime does.

    Clearly, the whole Run Button setup is the standard for Mario games without analog support. SM64DS is a sad reminder that standard tradition doesn't ALWAYS work.
    So, I got a simpler solution that could really improve Mario's controls and still fit the digital input.
    No remapping necessary.
    1st, remove the Run button completely and let Mario Run by default. Now you have access to more moves without being tied to one button while struggling to reach the others.
    2nd, lower the turning value to increase precision, similar to 3D Land/World. Now Mario feels even easier to control.
    I hope that helps. 😅

    Well I think the extra playable characters are a fantastic content Addition.
    However, the controls are imo the most important thing in a platformer and therefore the original will always be superior.
    But with that said the DS version is a nice compromise to get mario 64 on a freaking DS. You just can never expect the handheld version to have the same controls as the original console game. Luigi's Mansion is a great example as well.
    If you play mostly on the go then the DS version is superior, but if you have the time and Hardware to play it on a big screen there's not really a reason to play it on the DS as a Alternative.

    I dislike how you can't move mid air. That's it. I think everything else is an improvement. It feels less slippery having a run button allowing your movements to be more precise when you're trying to go slow. I'm looking at you, shifting sand land. Also holding y to run feels more natural in my opinion, even if 3d games don't use it

    The original fat DS d-pad was actually more comfortable for this game than any of the later DS/3DS models imo. It was less elevated, larger and there was less travel on it, it was more 'clicky'. Playing a 3D game with it wasn't that bad actually.

    I think a cool rom hack idea for the n64 version would be just moving the new content from the DS version. Of course nintendo should just take the controls of n64 version and make an ultimate version with ds versions content but we keep buying the rereleased n64 version so why would they?

  • @Ad-im1ne
    @Ad-im1ne Před rokem +1

    Moderately hot take, but I still don’t think the d-pad is what killed this game so bad. Case in point, try the pc port of sm64 using keyboard. It still feels better than the DS version and that’s because of all the physics changes which essentially nerfed what the player is capable of. Even if you’re good at 3D platformers, chances are you don’t need THAT much precision or course-correction. Reality is vanilla sm64 is a pretty easy game. There’s only a handful of stars which require more than a backflip. So I can only assume people pointing to the dpad are either ignorant or they’re dedicated sm64 players who dislike the altered turn speed. Or their hands hurt, which I definitely get…
