I wouldnt really say: "Ask Pirelli" as they just construct and manufacture the tyres how the FiA wants them to behave. They said they could make tyres with high grip and still last an eternity but the FiA doesnt want that...You made and entire video about it :P
Your comment was exactly what I was thinking.
It's possible but unlikely that the FIA has asked them to make tyres which require a certain minimum pressure in order to meet their expected life expectancy
If I remember correctly, Pirelli offered to make tires like that after a race in which Bridgestone tires were behaving like that.
How tyres behave regarding degradation is separate issue than one discussed in video
The good thing about this is Pirelli gets a lot of research data.

To be honest I think the last sentence of your video is incorrect: Pirelli knows how to make good tires. Instead of them we should ask FIA and FOM. Pirelli is producing tires based on their wish to make every race unpredictable like it was at the 2010 Canadian GP.
Yes this sucks. If Pirelli had the choice, there'd be zero pit stops.
yes exactly this! And this is going on as you said since 10 years. I think Formula 1 don't even know anymore what they want from the tires and from Pirelli. Some seasons they want 3 stops in a race, some seasons we have 1 stops. It's too complicated, they should just make a clean slate, ask the teams, do some proper research, ask Pirelli and decide on a normal tire which is the best for F1.
to add these tires are the 2019 spec if im not mistaken, pirelli were asked to make tires for the 2019 cars and now going into the 2021 season these same tires will be used because of covid. So these tires are experiencing load and will experience load over the next season that they were not designed to handle. Unless im confusing this with another bit of information
Actually, you need to ask the FIA, the tire manufacturers could build tires that would work all race long, but the FIA has specified certain levels of intention degradation to increase the spectacle.

@@EndEverAfter a better than average meme but yeah
Actually the reason why Pirelli doesn't make 100% durable tyres is F1 ask them not to. Tyre management is baked into the team strategy, and Pirelli is doing as they're told.
It's the FIA that has mandated how tyres last. Pirelli says they can make them last all race, or even all season (though at somewhat reduced grip!)
This video has never been more useful than now. Great to get some educational background when media doesn't provide
I’m always hearing about how some drivers are better at tire management. Can you go into that more? What are they doing differently to maintain their tires longer? If they are just driving slower wouldn’t they just get overtaken?
Your videos are always so engaging and explain concepts in a way so easily understood. Thank you so much for the obvious effort you put into these, I've been loving learning more about F1 from these videos!

No, floor, don't do that!
Easily the best manscaped ad I have seen 😂
richrebuilds and samcrac very definitely in the running on that, too
This can apply to other things than F1 cars too.
For example, a highway car tire will typically have an "average" tire pressure of 35PSI.
A big, bulky off-roading tire will have less stresses placed on it when used in muddy rocky terrain, but the drivers will want even more of that deformation and conforming to this rough ground, to ensure they get as much contact as they can. As such, offroad tires are run with lower pressures.
Bicycles (where most of my experience is) have this as well, but because loading is so low in a bicycle, you generally don't have to worry about temperature or the tire tearing itself apart. You do, however, have to worry about rolling resistance and ride quality (suspension is completely optional on a bicycle), and grip can be a concern if you ride off road.
A road bike's pencil thin tires will often be inflated to frighteningly high pressures to get the lowest rolling resistance possible, maximizing speed. My road hybrid calls for around 65PSI, and racing bikes can go well into the 100PSI territory.
A comfort or cruiser bike will usually run a rather middling 35PSI, but can be adjusted up and down from here depending on the kind of riding you want to do, with lower pressures absorbing bumps better. For my commutes, I would often run them at 45PSI for wear and ease of pedaling.
An off road trail or mountain bike has the same concerns as a off road truck tire, and will run lower pressures still. My mountain bike calls for as low as 25PSI for best performance off road, and "fat tire" bikes can be staggeringly low at only 10PSI - in fact they can get so low as they can deform completely and allow the rim to strike the terrain through the tire during hard riding, puncturing it and leaving you stranded.
There's various different factors at play in terms of tires. For example different tire compounds will react differently under different conditions like the F1 slick tires whose primary purpose is to last a whole season but previde enough traction so that the drivers don't slip slide everywhere or possibly into a barrier.
This channel's a win-win, science and racing combined, love it! Though to be fair, you had me at, 'your junk will never feel so loved'.

Love your videos very informative. Please consider doing a video about DRS and the rules determining where DRS zones can be. ie why was the back straight at Portimao not one?
great video again. I was wondering if you could do a video where you explain why so many teams like Racing Point, Mclaren, Red Bull and Renault have all of the sudden decided to go with a Mercedes-style narrow nose this year when they all previously used the wide noses with the little thumb on the end. Was very surprised to see all of them adopting to this design in exactly the same year.
I love uploads this often, keep it up if you can!😍

Nitrogen also weighs less than air. That, actually was primarily the reason it was used over air lowering unsprung weight is VITAL for handling. It only subsequently played out that it was inert and therefore pressure ranges were alot more predictable.
Another great video. Thanks Chain Bear.
Excellently explained!
Actually I think the answer to that last question is "ask the FIA". Pirelli have said they can make a grippy tyre that lasts the whole race, but the FIA want the tyres to degrade quickly to make the race more strategic and interesting (and I'm with the FIA on this)
And more potential accidents.
@@johndef5075 Well, you want the tyre to degrade not dismantle itself hahaha
I wanna see pirelli make the fastest possible tyre for a showcase. Mercedes with a tyre so soft it only lasts 5 laps
I love how some people do stupid things (not pointing fingers in ANY shape) and then blame the manufacturer of said product for their incompetence
Chain Bear back with the awesome content
Great video. Rather than ask Pirelli, I'd ask the FIA why they continue to insist on Pirelli with so many tyre failures. If you search tyre failure F1, you'll find failing tyres. Loads of them. If you search in other motorsports, you will find failing car components and watch the tyre bounce away intact on the wheel.

I got into f1 because of your videos. Between you and Cranky Yankee I learned that f1 is more than just European nascar lol. Thanks for making quality content.
Also if you ever develop a drinking problem we're gonna start calling you chain beer.
My understand was always -lower pressure means greater contact patch means more surface generating heat via friction means more degradation- ergo higher pressures mean lower temps typically. Is there a source cited where I could see the research showing the claim in the video? That lower pressures lead to lower temps?
they didn’t mention about winter and summer air
Easy to fix in theory. It's just that step 1 of the process involves getting rid of the FIA. That way, someone actually might listen to the teams and tyre manufacturer, and FINALLY get low profile tyres in F1...
Can you do a video on why rain seems to no longer exist?

Could you do a video about safety car lines and delta times?
That ad though... Haha our little scruffy bear cub
So lower pressure increases performance in the corner but surely it lowers your acceleration right? When I bike with lower pressure tyres I can immediately tell because it gets harder to go uphill.
this didn’t tell me anything I didn’t know. in general you run a higher pressure in qualifying or on colder days so the tires get to temp faster.
lower pressure for races, especially longer ones so they don’t overheat. I wonder if the pirelli tires have a weird compound which requires lower pressures for decent feel? isn’t this the year they went to larger wheels too? so maybe the shorter sidewalk is throwing the other drivers off
Smh, just use solid rubber tires. No more pressure manipulation!
the would be expensive to make for each event
Smh just remove tires.
@@HaXD1209 I like the way you think
Didn't Pirelli say that one of the main reasons for this is the required chemical make up of the rubber in order to meet the FIA spec. Specifically the cliff that they demand every tyre have?
I don't know if you did this but, can you make a video about Mexican GP circuit and the effects of its altitude on F1 cars?
There was a video where you mentioned mercedes rims being shaped in such a way that brakeheat from the disks gets into the tyres. Could they heat up the tyres by letting brakes rub while actually accelerating?
cool video... but that advert was great!
It's all about compromise of cost, materials and performance. For example if you strengthen the joint of the tyre then the tyre would be stiffer by nature and not as malleable due to its construction rather than pressures. If you use exotic materials to provide the integrity and malleability the cost skyrockets and makes no sense in a one tyre manufacturer.
To answer last question, you need to ask F1 or FIA. Pirelli only developed a tyre on the requirements put forward by them.
Make a video about the Portimao Race/Track please it would be nice to know whether you liked the new circuit or not...
Always a pleasure...enough said
oh .. I kind of wanted there to be more video after "ask pirelli" explaining their end of things.

Can you make a video about how F1 suspension works? The youtube channel Driver61 just uploaded a video about F1 suspension and torsion bars. And I thought it was interesting but hard to follow exactly how the torsion bars worked. And I could not find a video online that matches your skill with graphics and making complex topics easier to understand.
@Chain Bear I think the arrows in the tyre graphic at 6:11 are going the wrong way but I'm high af so I could be wrong
In my semi educated opinion, the reason Pirelli can't design a tire to use incredibly low pressures is that the tire's design would not wear as well as the current tires. The proposed tires would also be heavier which is particularly bad since the tires are far out from the center of rotation, therefore add a ton of unsprung weight.
Chain Bear makes me want to become an F1 Engineer
Nitrogen air is there any fluctuation in air pressure after the tires get hot.
The issue with tyre flex is heat and that heat dissipation is limited. At some point the heat load will cause the tyre to fail.
I was hoping to hear why Pirelli ordered only about REAR tyres. Which tyres (front or rear) more often and at what settings blow off?
I have a feeling that Jenny is a real person about to breakdown in chain bear
And whilst you're down there, have a feel for lumps
One of the few ways FIA can influence car performance is by messing with the tyres.
Another failed, yet sometimes successful, tactic at leveling the battleground.
Then again, *tyres are such a key component to a car’s Performance,* that even having one single supplier is an oxymoron for their “Pinnacle of Motorsports” claim.
Pirelli tried with a ring out of stellrope to give the sidewall a stable construction, we remember all how this ended in Silverstone few years ago. 😅
Question: Pirelli recommended front tyre pressures around 20 psi (I don't remember exactly) for this weekend. Portimao being a track which is heavy on tyres (elevation changes, braking while turning etc..), so how much the front/rear tyre pressure goes up? Using nitrogen minimises this effect I assume. Anyone?
Something remarkable: during an FP Martin Brundle was watching the cars around corner 8-9... And he was describing the cars are oscillating, which included the tyres mainly. 18" tyres will reduce this effect and put strain to the suspension.
Stu.. you are so smart dude.
That downstairs sponsor 😂😂
What if I put wet tyres on but increased the pressure up to the maximum possible usable pressure?
How much psi do they have?
Someone has to tell the F1 teams that it takes more than low tire pressure to have the same performance of a top fuel dragster.
I'll just buy the manscaped kit because of the way chainbear promoted it

Chairbear - Your physics teacher disguised in racing channel.
About the question to have it all. It is impossible. There will always be some trade off to get something better for something like a tire. The all around year tires cant both be soft and hard as winter and summer tires are. We can even look at tires designed for off road. 100% off road tires will be destroyed when driving on the road because of how they are made.
Even with safety in mind, i don't see what reason anyone has to tell F1 teams what the minimum tyre pressure is.
Merciiiiii
If the track temp is extremely cold then why don’t teams use intermediates and wets to get the heat?
6:58 He's actually Mr. Orange
Why just make 1 type of tire compound and use that at each race? Like Goodyear decides on which compound is best for each track in NASCAR and the teams have to set up the car for that compound and the driver has to manage the wear during the race..

@@Stellar-Cowboy notice how it happens to line up after the ad?
higher tire pressers will result in higher top speed and higher downforce lower friction on the road
Who else got this recommended again after Baku 2021?
why does everybody critisize Pirelli? to me it seems pretty much impossible to build the perfect tyre that degrades while not degrading so to speak. Even if you find various compounds that degrade in a very controlled way, so that the different grip levels/laptimes and the artificial degradation are met, there are still so many factors on each track that change this subtile physichemical intermezzo and simply close the window from time to time. that is why they play with pressures, compounds, regulations etc but its just sort of a paradox to make the tyre behave to all conditions, so its the job of the driver to adapt his driving style.
Best advert ever.
Doesn't hysteresis mean when the rubber is permanently altered a little bit through each cycle of deformation?
Does that mean that they should just set minimum allowed pressure and be done with it?
This is so annoying. I already pay for CZcams premium to not get ads, only to have them be apart of the video.
Haha that last sentence, dont be surprised if this video gets flagged by a certain tyre manifcaturer 😅
