After 2 years there, I left to try freelance / independent content creation on CZcams for awhile, before I head back to Feature Film!
    This is my journey- the entire process from when I decided I wanted to be an animator until I eventually get there, and everything along the way that will make it possible.

    Ohh my thor!! Thats so awesome you worked with Grimmel! (I loved his animation! The animators did a stellar job bringing his character to life the best, IMO.) And yes, I totally got a kick out of that lip-bit thing with him when I first saw it, ROFL! Nice job, and it seems like there were expressions of him in the film like that too.... its what makes Grimmel, GRIMMEL! Looks like playing with his rig would be a blast...especially the face.
    Note on what you said about not being sure on not putting some of your best work in your reel:
    My anim professor ironically spoke on that recently, and told us to ALWAYS put your very best work in, and to NEVER put anything bad, even for the reasons you mentioned like not having that type of animation or being to short. His reasons were because when it gets down to the wire, and they have the top reels they like, then they begin to look at their weakness in each one in order to eliminate them...like that body mech might not be "bad", but compared to one thats super polished on the other, then its the weakest. It can be just ONE shot that either makes it or breaks it for you, so make it count.
    He also said to put the one(s) your most proud of at the beginning since they watch soooo many and might not watch the whole thing if its not up to quality.
    IDK who is right. (I'm just a junior anim/effects student.) If thats helpful to you or not, but hopefully. (I do consider him to be very wise and experienced in the field for what its worth though.)
    Your reel looks cool; honestly, the jump in quality threw me off at first, but, your anim overall is quite expressive and lively...I liked it. Its more than I have currently too, lol. This vid was real helpful in critiquing my anim and creating that sense of accountable is a smart idea.

    • @SirWade
      @SirWade  Před 5 lety

      I agree with your professor- only the best work should go on the reel. I just felt so weird about only have 2 acting/sitting shots :P But absolutely true, one shot can make or break the whole thing! Thank you for sharing all this! Leaving a heart so more people see it!

    So glad I found your channel! I know that dreams PS4 is looked down on by the animation community at large, but it's an amazing budget way to animate, and this channel has helped me there more than you might think! It's basically a visual 3d rep. of timelines and keyframes and it's much less daunting than other tools like zbrush or Maya. Anyway there's definitely a whole community here that I'll be recommending you to, and I'd love to see a real animator try it!

    Thank you for this video. This year I want to improve my portfolio and demo reel (both need a serious update). I do want to add things to my demo reel, but it's been a long while since I worked in animation. Most of the stuff I currently do are 2D non-animated projects and 3D modeling. I feel like I'm sorely behind and intimidated by relearning Maya and Blender. I plan to start practicing next month and hopefully, build up enough skills to create new animations and work for my portfolio.

    This is really awesome from what I saw I thought this was really awesome but once you started to critique I can see the flaws and be like yea that might need some work, but I love the villain sucking his teeth thing, I was re-watching it just to see that part then I saw the rest of your video but I'm kinda amazed that the blocking looked liked a first pass i would at least had it up to a blocking + because if you ever had to re visit it would be difficult I feel because of this I'm excited to see what kind of workflow you do for your animations while re working your reel

    • @SirWade
      @SirWade  Před 5 lety

      The blocking workflow on that shot was interesting- very key pose-driven before turning to a reference-driven flow. The advice was "if it's good with only a few poses, then the shot can be good if you keep that energy. If those few poses don't work, the shot won't work" so the whole shot once looked like that second half- and then I filmed reference, trying to hit those poses so I could use it after having already decided the poses. It was interesting!!

  • @marshmallowvampire8503
    @marshmallowvampire8503 Před 4 lety +1

    To me, Hiccup's shot was a good base, and it was nice to look at and hear what an ex-DreamWorks producer thinks about their own work. They were both really life like. I was shocked to hear you thought Grimmel needed more expression. Yes, the facial stuff could've used tweaks, but it was still nice just to look at.
    I love Grimmel's bodily& facial expression over all(it did do it's job w/ making me smile& laugh like you wanted). The "Tt" was a little over done, but still. 👌👌👌👌👌👌👌👌😃😁😃😁😃😁😃👍👍👍👍👍👍👍

I started going to Full Sail for game art a year ago before I found out what I really wanted to do. After I took a few animation classes, I’m positive this is what I want my primary skill to be. I wanted to ask if this was a bad move to go to this school for this specific skill set. Does it have a decent reputation for animators?

    Don't be to hard on yourself. Great expressions, awesome strong Key poses. especially on the last one... 11secondclub, good measure for time. They tell you to avoid camera cuts in school. However if you do more action full body shots you will need a dynamic camera. It will show you understand composition.

    Could you explain how animators do extremely complex scenes like cities? Don't all of the houses/buildings have to be modeled in 3d? I have been a 3d CAD person in the manufacturing world for years and can't imagine the time it would take to model so many elements. I would think copy and paste would be part of it while adding in some random variables to add diversity, but I still don't understand how animators pull this off. I think a very good example of this is in toy story 4, the antique store. These objects can't just be copy and pasted, someone had to model all of these. That's baffling to me.

    • @dannydelgado892
      @dannydelgado892 Před 5 lety +1

      a lot of rigs have a snap to PV attribute. so for an ik wrist instead of the elbow following a pole vector it will snap to the pole vector so wherever you place it the elbow will stick. the only thing you have to worry about is when the elbow is locked in place that means if there is to much movement in the shoulders or wrists it will look like the arm is stretching way to much

    • @SirWade
      @SirWade  Před 5 lety +2

      In the case of the elbow to knee, it was actually frame-by-frame FK keys. But yeah for the Hiccup shot's IK elbow it was a balance of locking it to the chair and dealing with the stretching arm! Also thank you :)
