very beautiful orchestration by a very high quality orchestra. But it's too clean and too stiff! Originally the cancan was danced in the disreputable popular balls on Saturday nights. The upper middle class and the bosses went to see the workers dancing freely, like old voyeuristic pigs. And the workers would lift up their skirts to shock them and especially turn around to show them their asses, to all these bosses and business leaders. It was a way of getting revenge, despising them and insulting them. It was popular music, played by approximate musicians, in a great chaos where it smelled of tobacco, beer and hot sweat. Offenbach made a masterpiece of it but we must not forget where this music comes from....
It would have been better with dancers......
