  • Before Wings of Desire (1987 Wim Wenders) there was another tale involving a lovelorn circus performer and the Angel whose heart she would tame. This is a review of Circus Angel (Fifi La Plume, 1965 ) by maverick director Albert Lamorisse (The Red Balloon).
Join us as we continue to explore the fascinating filmography of this truly special director who died much too soon, leaving behind some very special movies for the child in us all.

I've always loved Circus Angel! I really enjoyed and appreciate your review. Is there any way to get this film on DVD or blu-ray? It would be a perfect film for the Criterion Collection

It would be great for Criterion, I agree! I thought it was streaming on Mubi, but on closer inspection it is just listed there, not streamed. I found a VHS on Ebay, which had the English dialog. There's also a DVD Collection titled El Cine De Albert Lamorisse containing all the films which pops up on Ebay and Amazon now and then, somewhat better image quality. Unfortunately that's only in French or Castillian. I'm tempted to take the English dialog track from VHS and sync it over the dvd image in my computer, but don't want to get in trouble. It's a shame no one is doing this more officially (that I know of.) Hopefully we'll see it someday, I think many people would enjoy seeing his lesser-known films. Cheers.
