  • In this episode we dig into some groundhog in effort to stave off starvation. Groundhog are small, but they are all we have, so we make use of the entire animal including the stomach, brain, and skin cooked in a very traditional way that preserves everything.
Catch n cook is what this series is all about!
This scrape and singe method is very similar to how it would be prepared by the Hadza people which are one of the only remaining hunter-gatherers alive today.
Welcome to Season 2 of The Wilderness Living Challenge. As last year, the rules are simple, come out as heavy or heavier than going in to crown ourselves victors.
This year we decided to be more mobile and we came in ready with a plan. Find out if we can put turn a year's worth of experiments and learning into success and thrive in our epic journey of survival!

Thanks guys for the video. I'm up here in WV, and we love groundhog here. I ate 22 of them one summer. I have found that they are better on a stick because the fat tastes so rough. They eat a lot of clover and they taste like that clover and smell like that clover as you are preparing them for cooking. Skin 'em and put 'em on a stick rotisserie style. Try that without the fat, you'll like it a lot better. Lot of garlic helps tone down the clover smell and taste. Oh and also, they're nick name is whistle pigs. Just sayin'.

On the Navajo Nation, my dad and his brothers would hunt prairie dogs with my grandpa and they'd cook em right up, like this. My dad scolded us for talking how you guys talked about the groundhog, when you described it as acidic, gelatinous, or slimy, or said to "pretend it's your girlfriend." He'd tell us that it was wrong to speak of food that way. That's the Navajo way: say good things about your food. That was in the 1960s in New Mexico. My dad and his family still used a horse and buggy to travel from Tohatchi to Gallup, or Tohatchi to Twin Buttes.

I don't think it's unbelievable at all. The videos Chris makes convey his message of self-reliance, individual competence & survival ability outside any city or town (or maybe within the poorest sections of one, where life is dangerous & public services are often lacking). This message cannot be doubted, whatever viewers may feel about it. CZcams, OTOH, was generated from within a large metropolitan area & is now owned by Google, a corporation (which was also started within a city). Cities are manifestations of organized collective life; they value interdependence & reliance on centralized life support systems. A city *must* value such things at some level in order to exist. These values are not bad in & of themselves--even the pioneers & mountain men had to return to town to trade for supplies the forests can't provide--but it's inevitable that they inherently conflict with the self-reliant life.

That's right it never will because you live online and will NEVER have any kind of real life experience. Also they clearly said that it was a nuisance animal. For all you know the family that owns that property has a garden they depend on for food and that animal was destroying there crops. But again you do not now nor will you ever know what that is like. And if you had to rely on a crop to feed your family chances are they wood be screwed, because you know nothing about it. Enjoy your hormone injected inhumanly raised store bought food. Get a life you ignorant shit! IF YOU DONT LIKE IT DONT WATCH IT!! Sorry guys didn't mean to rant. It's people like this that are causing your channel to have problems.

*TO THE VIEWER PLEASE READ, groundhog often create problems for other animals such as horses and cows since they tunnel and create holes in pastures. If another animal falls, the injury is often fatal. In order to keep this damage in check, we use live animal traps, specific to the animal. In Ontario, Canada, we are not able to re-release trapped animals further than 1 km from their origin. Since animals have big home ranges, this presents a problem for their release as they will often simply return and the problem will never go away. Instead, we decided to make use of the groundhog and eat the entire animal leaving nothing to waste.*

I'm not screaming. I'm vegan and enjoy this channel for educational purposes. U never know when we will have to survive again, the world is changing; and it's not the first time that a planetary catastrofe has occured in the past.
I'm vegan because of the planet btw, we're definetly experiencing climate change in Europe, lots of tree species going extinct in the middle east, and people migrating away from Africa because of the climate change there (moving north to where I am). Animal agriculture is a big culprit; and thinking u need those fats to stay healthy is a fallacious thought. Gotta be flexible in your given situation: I'm vegan for the world, my health, and the animals; but definetly don't shy away from living a hunter-gatherer lifestyle when it becomes necessary...
Point is, it isn't necessary; and we can live way more easily by adopting smart gardening styles (back to eden permacultural gardening, for example; low effort, high produce). Aside form this, tubers man. Early man was scavenging for sure; but one of the few reliable food staples in the wild were underground food storages. Seeds, nuts, tubers, whole grains, herbs, and greens; and I'll be a happy strong man.

i'm vegan and i love these video's. i don't eat meat because personally i don't think an animal should have to die for my greed when there are alternatives. but in a survival situation damn straight i'm eating the first thing that comes along it's a bloody good thing to know how to catch kill prepare and cook an animal in that situation should it arise, plus not only that but he also show's you what kinds of plants are edible as well which is good to know as plants can be more harmful if the wrong ones are consumed. as for anyone that does eat meat not my place to comment i would never shove my opinions in someone else's faces. i wouldn't want to be trapped in a survival situation and not have the slightest idea how to survive. im sure most vegans would probably not last long at all i don't intend on being one of them

@Preston W stop being such a fassy and searching for things to be offended by. These guys are eating the animal so it's not going to waste. people are going to eat meat regardless off my standing in the situation. I didn't say I agree with eating meat or the killing of an animal did I so get off your high horse. I simply said in a survival situation I would like to know how to survive and that's why I like these videos. So bother someone else with your virtue signalling.

Enjoyed your video. removing the hair of the the critter I found fascinating. It makes sense to do that then just skinning it and getting who know what from the hair on to the meat.

  • @christopherneelyakagoattmo6078

Just a suggestion here. Rendering that fat out of the skin will be a much more satisfying meal. Place something in the bottom of the dutch oven like some green ash, maple, cherry, or oak branches the size of your pinky. Quarter that puppy out on top of your stick rack. Head, rib/back (saddle,) arms, legs. Cook it dry for half hour-45 minutes, covered. That will render enough fat that it will not stick. Then pull it off and take the sticks out: (Make some wooden pliers with two sticks lashed together with bank line or whatever cordage.) Or use your leatherman.
Place the quarters, saddle, and head back in (skin side down )and let them fry for 10 to 15 min: turn, season then,:;,then add your liver and heart. (the organs cook pretty fast.) 10 minutes pull everything but the head and start munching. Add the stomach and brown it like a sausage. then add water to finish cooking it and the head.
Another way is to skin the animal after you singe (and maybe scald it.) Then cut the skin in half inch by 1 inch strips or so: fry to render and you can munch on backwoods pork rinds while the meat is frying. Roast, fry, boil, in that order. RFB baby. You can eat like a king.

I never cooked a ground hog in that manner. There are scent glands, white in color, under the front and rear leg pits. Scent glands ruin the taste of the meat. Remove the head. I always cut the fat off to help remove the gamey taste. I always skinned mine making sure not to let the fir touch the meat, removed the guts and scent glands. Put the hog in water and put 3 or so tablespoons of salt on the hog and in the water, place the hog in the pot in the refrigerator and let it soak over night. You remove the water and salt solution and repeat this water and salt treatment for a second night if the ground hog is not young, note that I never ate old ground hogs, often showing grey fur. After this I put the hog in a large pot, cut up some vegetables, I like carrots and potatoes because I am from the mid-West. A large hog will feed a family of 4 to 6. It is a lot of work getting the fur off because a ground hog is the largest member of the squirrel family. It is NOT like skinning a rabbit.

Groundhogs have scent glands just like beavers. Even if you don’t gut it at least cut out the scent glands, otherwise it’s gonna have a very strong and gamey taste. If you like gamey taste then ya’ll did I great job. Boiling is very effective against any parasites it might have had. When I cook groundhog I typically put it in a crockpot with potato’s, tomato’s, carrots, & seasonings. Great video btw ya’ll. Really enjoyed watching it.
