    A memory in the context of the Jazz Telecaster . I was at the artisan guitar show in Pennsylvania, Sean McGowan ,Jimmy Bruno and another guitarist (I don't recall his name at the moment,sorry)They where all playing these beautiful jazz boxes with their special "jazz amps". Brent Mason showed up with this road worn Mexican Tele and a deluxe reverb and the sonic beauty of his set up simply out shined the others.(They are all great players with great guitars)But it was the simple setup that was just so startlingly effective and memorable.

    My first electric guitar was a Tele over 40 years ago. Still can't shake my love for them. I have always considered them to almost by the un-guitar of guitars They can disappear in your hands as a tool and make it all about the music. Nothing that I have seen, tried, owned or own can do that besides a Tele. And great work as always, Tim. I really appreciate your videos and insights.

      The Tele was the first production solid body period just beating out Les and Mary.
      Incidentally, Bruce Clarke had some success using a Les Paul for Jazz gigs in the mid 50’s to early 60’s. It wasn’t as good as a Tele but was quite acceptable.

    Hi Tim - It was such a pleasure to experience your art at the Guild of American Luthiers Convention that just finished. When you were playing with Pearl Django (which was fabulous) I was wracking my brain, trying to remember all the CZcams videos of yours that I had previously enjoyed. But then seeing you in action was a revelation. And then a double revelation when you were playing for Jason Lollar at the electric appraisal. Giant catalogue of tunes in your head, atmospheric chord invention, but more, just an overflowing sense of love for the music. And it was wonderful how welcoming, open and friendly you were. (I was the guy asking about the Charlie Christian pickup). I wish I lived closer, instead of distant Colorado, or I would be begging to become one of your students. - Peter

    Wow Tim! Your love for Telecaster is really a love film... Congrats Tim 👍🏻 because you are humble and a incredible sofisticated player. I would like to learn your playing. I used to play eléctric guitar, rock, with a pick, but also I play classic guitar with muy fingers and nails. Now I take my guitars again. My wife gifts me a Telecaster made by a Luthier. It has Fender 62' on It. I don't play very nice both guitars. With my Telly, I'm trying to learn with a pick, Dunlop Jazz III. I try It watching to Sandra (Guitarversum). But when I watch your videos, I think on changing my technique and play like you. But it Is hard to learn jazz, chords and comping by myself. Well my dear Tim, congratulations again. I'm a fan. Thank you!👋

    • @AndreaAustoni
      @AndreaAustoni Před 3 lety +4

      Totally disagree on the comfort. The slab body just digs into my chest and forearm. IMO Leo didn't get it right with the Telecaster body, which is why he came up with the contours, arm bevel and belly cut for just about every other guitar and bass he designed later.

    • @BOOLsheet
      @BOOLsheet Před 3 lety +2

      If Leo had gotten everything right with the Tele, then the Strat wouldn’t likely exist. The lack of contours make it uncomfortable for a lot of people. The new Ultra line addresses that issue though and is a great Tele.

  • @jonwiddicombe101
    @jonwiddicombe101 Před 3 lety +1

    Whats not to like.
    Leo got it right first touch. The scale length is perfect. They intone and tune perfectly; who said they don’t tune? That’s a set up problem not the tool.
    The strings pass over the nut dead straight canceling nut jam tuning problems.
    I bought a 2012 American Standard with the trick tone pot and CShop pups and the modifications are icing on the cake. The first Tele Ive left completely alone and not tinkered with. They are near perfect right off the rack.With flat wound chromes it’s the solo lap pianists dream, and just like you say Tim, it’s them or Arch tops.
    With the Eastman 175 clone I bought too, I was set to reharness the pup/pot array when I got a peaky timbre off the neck magnets when toggled to it, but then tried adjusting all four pots and that was the answer; it must be wired just like the 50s Gibsons as the tone for the neck pickup is adjusted to perfect with the brigade pickups volume & tone pots.
    Then she sounded absolutely superb. The tone was superlative regardless of linear taper pots and caps I was wrong about. It just wasn’t modern wired. I so glad I didn’t prematurely go off half cocked and butcher the system. All I changed was bird head pot knobs for there visual and tactile set up advantage pointed out by Barney.
    Using the four pots it also gets great sound at the middle toggle position getting the bridge pup involved which I seldom use for Jazz timbres I’m after; until this one at least. You can get a really good balance between the basses and the trebles dynamics wise and came a hairs breadth from wrecking it.
    So must apologise to the Eastman guys. I got it very wrong there. Use all the pots and it’s a peerless Jazz box ( once you put a String Butler and flat wound chrome 12s on it that is, and let it sing through a Fender Valve Amp with Spring Reverb, Polytone or JC120 sound nice too.

    • @7171jay
      @7171jay Před 11 měsíci +1

      @jazzrocks It's not only Telecasters but all guitars really that a rather large number of people choose to leave the tone control (and volume as well) just turned to ten and then forget about it except maybe to use it as an off switch. The volume and tone controls on the guitar itself are essential tools that are right at hand while you are playing and offer different shades and subtleties than the controls on your amp because you are changing the sound before it even hits the amp. I know a good number of players live by the "turn it up and forget it" rule but they are missing out on quite a lot if you haven't figured out your guitar's volume and tone controls and what they can do for you. About as far from jazz as one can get but I have a fuzz pedal that I really love with the guitar's tone backed down and if I didn't use my guitar's tone control I would probably have determined the pedal was useless and sold it long ago.

    I hate the notion that teles are bright guitars. They are heavy and fat sounding especially the bridge pup. It’s like a notch below the fatness of a LP and much thicker sounding than a strat. Btw, I love what you’re playing under your chatter lol sounds amazing YOU play so amazing

    Tim or someone else, can you recommend a not-too-crazy expensive Tele for jazz and blues? I would like to avoid making lots of modifications and the budget is under 1000 bucks. I am an amateur who mainly plays by himself. Thanks.

    Hi Tim
    I have a question why you choose a maple fretboard.
    Thx

      Maple on a tele feels better to me, but I have plenty of rosewood boards as well.

    Hi Tim, I just saw a video where they claimed Ted Greene had his Tele chambered. Is this something you can verify? Just curious. Apparently Keith Richards owns it now.

    • @TimLerchGuitar
      @TimLerchGuitar  Před rokem +1

      Ted did what I would call "hogging out" a lot of material under the pickgaurd like a swimming pool route only more barbaric: ) he didn't always do this but Banana Cream (his main gigging guitar) was hogged out .

    Great video! I'm curious, though, what are your thoughts on a rosewood neck telecaster for jazz?

    • @TimLerchGuitar
      @TimLerchGuitar  Před 2 lety +1

      I don’t think the neck wood makes that much difference to the sound and I guess it just all depends on what you like.

    Great channel. Btw, what is your lollar pick up height?

    • @TimLerchGuitar
      @TimLerchGuitar  Před 2 lety

      I have the neck pickup set quite low. The top of the cover is level with the pick guard with the treble side just a bit higher. .

      @@TimLerchGuitar Thanks for fast reply. I am playing Tele because you can still get fat jazz tone, but also get clarity, when i am using in my solo two tones ot chords, it sounds muddy on humbuckers. Tele with lollar is just perfect

    The sustain is key for me. non-tele players don't get it. They find it too ridiculous to even contemplate that a spanky old telecaster should have superior sustain, but that's because they don't know what sustain is. They think sustain is the feedback produced by humbuckers run through a tube screamer.

  • @AndreaAustoni
    @AndreaAustoni Před 3 lety +1

    I also don't know why everybody says Telecasters are bright. Stratocasters are much brighter. Teles are twangy and nasal because they have mids, while Strats are scooped, especially their neck pickup.
