What I thought was gonna be a great day fishing didn't turn out as planned. However, I did manage to catch another gar after removing the hook and my finger is completely healed now.
For those wondering why I left the hook in the fish, the simple answer is that the fish swallowed it. The long answer is that alligator gar have a very long snout with 2 rows of sharp teeth. I retrieve the hook from the fish the majority of the time, but I use braid as leader with 1/0 live bait hooks to prevent harm if swallowed. Alligator gar sit with the bait in their mouth sometimes for a minute, and they are very difficult to hook due to how bony their mouths are. The majority of alligator gar guides use treble hooks and wire and cut the line on pretty much every fish they catch because money is on the line. I do not do this. Conservation of this native species is my number one priority. I am assuming that the people asking why I left the hook in the fish are not from the south USA, but i would love to be able to educate those watching my videos that include MUCH bigger gar than this! If anybody would be willing to, please sign the petition in my bio to help this species become a gamefish. We are currently the only state without limits on Alligator Gar, and it is destroying their populations. I have reached out to organizations to have this changed with no success, so please, sign this petition if you would like to see this species thrive like they did 100 years ago.

Props for reacting properly and calmly. Good job, and good to see you got it out okay. The fact it went all the way through may have actually been a good thing, meant the barb didn't rip the skin as it was pulled back through and you could crush it first. Still, a nasty wound, but nice handling with that situation.
@@herpaderpa6474 у меня такое случалось. Да, это действительно хуже, чем на видео, потому что приходится самостоятельно выталкивать его дальше, чтобы рана была сквозная.
I've had a hook in the hand, and a hook in the thigh. Neither went all the way through. For the hand, i used the fishing line trick. It worked surprisingly well. The hook in the thigh was a different story. I had to push the point on through. Then i tried to grab the point of the hook to pull it out, but only managed to break the point off, so i had to repeat the process with a dull hook. (I don't recommend it)
I like how it is just the most calm reaction to having something stabbed through you so far it came out the other end. he was just like "ah, I got hooked, it went through my finger I'm fine"
Been there - Done that. Still waiting for the T-shirt! I feel for you! I had a similar thing happen while guiding a Salmon trip about 15 years ago. First fish of the morning, a nice 8 pound Coho. Got him in the boat and grabbed him and he started thrashing around and I caught the trailing single hook pretty much the same way you did, but it didn't go all the way through. Got the line cut as quick as was possible. Then had to deal with pulling the hook out. For Salmon fishing, we are required to use barbless hooks, or pinch the barb flat. I was using my needlenose pliers to try and pull the hook out, but it wouldn't move in either direction, and pulling on it hurt like hell! Got one of my guests to hold my hand down firmly on the deck while I pulled on it. After about 10 minutes of this painful tug-of-war, I finally got the hook out, only to discover that I had forgot to pinch the barb! You can bet that I never forgot that again!
I think this happens to almost all fishermen, should they do it long enough. I was probably 10 when it first happened to me. I acted like a baby and later felt great shame.... It was a great life lesson though. You, on the other hand, chose to man up, accept reality, and TCOB. All-in-all you handled it like a boss. Well done sir!
When I was a child, my grandparents lived on a freshwater lake in the North. I'll never forget visiting one summer when my grandfather woke me up in the middle of the night to take me out on the dock to watch the alligator gar rolling just a few feet away.
This way, a hook is not removed, it is cut in the weakest part, which is under the harpoon or in the tying area. That's in a tutorial on what not to do to crush the harpoon since the hooks have a chrome coating that the harpoon tears as it passes
Glad it came out fine buddy. It's happened to me and always carry pliers in the box now. Real dull ache of a pain isn't it. P.S don't skimp on the pliers 😉
The worst part is that if you go to a hospital is pretty much the same as if you pulled it out yourself since they can not administrate any type of anesthesic on your fingers sin you will lose your ability to feel in that finger permanently. Good thing you stayed calm, seriously that helped A LOT
It wouldn't have gone through if it hit bone. I got 8 stitches in my finger today and It's supposed to heal in a week and really didnt hurt that bad tbh. I'm sure he's fine
Handled it better than I would have. A hook through the finger sounds very painful, but that's good it went all the way through so the barbed tip didn't cause further damage when removing.
Bro I would never blame you homie for leaving the hook. You had a giant gauge steel hook hanging through your pinky finger. Nice job crushing the barb and getting it out! I've always had this in the back of my mind happening to me because I fish a lot. I've watch a fair few hook removals too so I can be prepared. But the barb crush was interesting and new to me. People usually tie more line to the hook thats stuck in you, then rip the hook out with the opposite action. But the barb crush in combination with that ripping technique would probably do well together.
Fun fact: most of the time, you think something is more painful when watching it than actually experiencing it, I'm certain most of the people who say they would've cried just think that, but in reality they wouldn't cry.
Man, you did that damn well! Happened to me two times in the last few years. fortunately i'm always carrying my knipex cobolt bolt cutter in my backpack for this reason. Last time my finger caught a treble hook while hand landing a big pike (46 inches), that was not funny at all...
@@user-jw1dv2vw1y Yeah, the hook luckily didn't catch any tendons or nerves. But it was a pretty bloody matter and quite painful. I know why i'm usually using a net to land pike, but on this very day i forgot it at home... Sadly the pike didn't make it 'cause we somehow had to manage the operation.
@@NaDa4swf ive never had a hook in me but the other day i was hugging my dog and he heard a noise. He got up and slammed my jaw and dislocated it it was a horrible pain and took some work to get it back in ❤️
When I was a kid, my cousin stepped on a treble hook. Shirt, but no big deal really. But my uncle insisted we had to drive to the nearest doctor’s house for him to take it out. Jesus.
Dang! My uncle accidentally hook me on my head and it went kind of deep but i managed to pull it out but not in a proper way, believe me it wad painful .
Keep a klien tools diagonal cutting pliers in your fishing tackle box. It can cut through even thick nails and would make light work of the hook you had in the hand and you are able to get in close with them and cut the hook close to the skin
Happened to me years back...bout 20 years WOW i'm old. Youre lucky, it went all the way through. The old balsa wood rapala i was using had tiny hooks and it went straight in my thumb, dropped the bass and it went nuts flopping around. Sunk it in to the hilt. Tried to push it through, hook was too small and deep to expose the barb. Had to just rip it out. Hurt worse than any broken bone i've had. I ALWAYS carry needle nose, most of the time on my hip. Fish gets pinned, hook grabbed with needle nose, then I grab the fish and remove the hook. Just put wire cutters in my tackle backpack 😂
I had a similar situation. When I was 13 I caught a gar on a jerk bait and when i was taking the hook out it flopped and the hook went into the top of my finger, the gar then slipped off the ledge with the hook still in its mouth… so the whole weight of the gar was hanging from my hooked finger. I had to pull it back up, unhook it, push the hook through, clip it and then then pull it out. Took my 30 minutes to pull it through, never went to the Dr and pitched for my baseball team the next day with a balloon for a finger Lol
Actually it happened to when I was a teen, it stinks at first but then it goes away very fast ! It's not THAT bad ! I also continue fishing right after

I took the x-rays and walked down to the ER. The doc had already finished up with the previous patient and was sitting at his desk, chatting with a nurse. I handed him the seven year old’s jacket and films and said, “You know that strange feeling you get when something happens and you swear it’s happened before?”.
He said, “Deja vu?”
I said, “Yeah, that’s the one.”
this once happened to me and its was on my butt!.. some stupid jerk leave a treble hook on a bench and luckily i had a plier in my tool box

This just happened to me today. It was in my big toe look like you didn’t touch the bone on my big toe.

bros keeping that hook as part of his future dad lore stories
Props for reacting properly and calmly. Good job, and good to see you got it out okay. The fact it went all the way through may have actually been a good thing, meant the barb didn't rip the skin as it was pulled back through and you could crush it first. Still, a nasty wound, but nice handling with that situation.
Facts if it was halfway and he had to get it out ooof
That’s happened before, had to pull it through the top of my finger. It was a much thinner hook so I was able to clip it and pull it back out
Yeah i caught a smallmouth 1 month ago and the little shit hook a treble in my thumb up to the bend so i had to go to er and it def wasnt fun

Bro took it like a champ cause he stayed calm and didn’t panic.
I like how it is just the most calm reaction to having something stabbed through you so far it came out the other end. he was just like "ah, I got hooked, it went through my finger I'm fine"
"he hooked me!" 😂 The irony.
😂😂😂😂
This is why fishing is just dumb. Hurting defenseless animals in their own habitat for fun. Dude had it coming.

Bro really took far cry healing to a new level 💀

My man’s handled like a beast good job staying composed.
"it went all the way through but im fine im fine" unfazed
MY ANXIETY WATCHING THIS IS GODAMN SO HIGHT
Bro handled that like he's went through it a million times.. 💯 respect
The way I'd be so stressed, scared and upset if this happened to me but this guy is so chill about it. I'm literally in pain watching this omg
Haha thank you
Tbf, you were 10 years old

I hooked my little brother in the chin once........ We went to the hospital and got it removed, we can joke about it now so no problems.
Lol I did the same, needed gas and air and had a full on panic attack 😂
The fish really said “Now it’s your turn😈”

How’s bro so chill about it I would be screaming my guts out I couldn’t breath watching this lol 😂
Not them casually going back to fishing and casually having a convo like nothing happened
Gotta admire the resilience and calmness you took it with
The worst part is that if you go to a hospital is pretty much the same as if you pulled it out yourself since they can not administrate any type of anesthesic on your fingers sin you will lose your ability to feel in that finger permanently.
Good thing you stayed calm, seriously that helped A LOT
Man you handled that like a G . Mad respect 💪🏻
Damn, I thought the thumbnail was clickbait! That thing had to have hit the bone!
Maybe scraped it, no big deal, it heals. I'm impressed how he handled it tho.
It wouldn't have gone through if it hit bone. I got 8 stitches in my finger today and It's supposed to heal in a week and really didnt hurt that bad tbh. I'm sure he's fine
I can assure you that went through the bone. No question about it.

Something _very_ funny about you opening the box at 1:00 in search of a tool to aid you, only to find a bunch of fish
Currently 4am and I got recommended this 💀
1am for me
Handled it better than I would have. A hook through the finger sounds very painful, but that's good it went all the way through so the barbed tip didn't cause further damage when removing.
Mini bolt cutters is a must in the tackle box
Great job
Bro I would never blame you homie for leaving the hook. You had a giant gauge steel hook hanging through your pinky finger. Nice job crushing the barb and getting it out! I've always had this in the back of my mind happening to me because I fish a lot. I've watch a fair few hook removals too so I can be prepared. But the barb crush was interesting and new to me. People usually tie more line to the hook thats stuck in you, then rip the hook out with the opposite action. But the barb crush in combination with that ripping technique would probably do well together.
fish just straight up countered this man
Now that’s what I call having the peace that surpasses all understanding good job sir 👍🏻
😳 That’s a fact.
Fun fact: most of the time, you think something is more painful when watching it than actually experiencing it, I'm certain most of the people who say they would've cried just think that, but in reality they wouldn't cry.
nice fish and nice staying calm with a hook through your finger
Man, you did that damn well! Happened to me two times in the last few years. fortunately i'm always carrying my knipex cobolt bolt cutter in my backpack for this reason. Last time my finger caught a treble hook while hand landing a big pike (46 inches), that was not funny at all...
Dang. R u ok?

That's a smart fish. That fish was like "you want to know what it's liked to be hooked eh?"
"He hooked me"... i never thought i would listen this before... 😂😂
Keep a klien tools diagonal cutting pliers in your fishing tackle box. It can cut through even thick nails and would make light work of the hook you had in the hand and you are able to get in close with them and cut the hook close to the skin
dude ive seen maybe one of your videos a while ago didn't mean to see you here
Happened to me years back...bout 20 years WOW i'm old.
