  • The setup of this woodworking tool started as a tuning and it almost ended as a restoration.
This cheap block plane was really in bad conditions, and it required a couple of hours of work, mostly spent on the blade sharpening.
The shavings obtained in the final test satisfied me a lot, and even on hard wood it performs very well.
I am very satisfied with the result, and this tool will be very useful for my next carpentry projects.
I hope you enjoy the video and I'd like to know what you think about this block plane.

What do you think of the shavings from the final test?
I am pleasantly surprised by the feeling you get when using it, very smooth and controlled. Not bad at all for a cheap block plane as this one.

Amazing what a little bit of love can do 👍
Works so much better now. 10 out of 10 points. Your little sharpening depth gauge is also a top idea.

Thanks a lot for your support. The depth gauge is very useful because it allows you to be constant in measuring the angle.

I have the exact same plane and it could do with a similar makeover. Some dialog to explain what you're doing would be really helpful.

To setup a hand plane in a correct way, the first thing to do is to make the sole completely flat and smooth (I start from 100 grit and go up to 600/800), this operation must be done with the plane assembled and with the blade retracted.
Then the imperfections of the casting marks must simply be eliminated to allow the blade to sit firmly in its seat.
Above all, the mouth must be filed and made as smooth as possible.
This plane had paint drips everywhere and it required a little more work.
The blade must be sharpened with a double edge (25° the main one and 30° the secondary one).
It is a procedure that must be done on all hand planes, even expensive ones because they always have manufacturing defects.
Maybe I took it for granted that the images were enough to make the procedure clear, but I thank you for the comment and I will add subtitles with the preparation details.
      Thanks for letting me know.

I also always look for best deal but sometimes I wonder if it is smart lol - well at least it works albeit it is not comfortable to use.

After the fix was very comfortable and pleasant to use. Since hand planes require setup anyway (even the high-end ones) I bought the cheapest one to see if it was worth it, and for my needs I'd say yes. Thanks for visiting and comments.
