Chasing The Giants Of Guyana With Caimans and Anacondas

- Deep in the South American rainforest in the country of Guyana lies the Essequibo River which is full of wildlife like tapirs, anacondas, and eagles. Follow along as Rainer and Sandy adventure the rainforest and search for the elusive Black Caiman. The Caiman is a relative of the alligator, but can outgrow it in size, and it is the biggest predator in the South American rainforest river.

BRILLIANT.... this footage just goes to show how far and what camera men will actually put themselves through to "get the shot".... absolutely amazing! I would have been shaking too. I would have thought the gator could at least smell him in some way. But man they brushed right up on him a few times...
No, I think he's n idiot. He has put himself and the caiman at risk and here's why;
If that Caiman would have unexpectedly attacked him the crew around him, (there is VERY likely a crew that you don't see), may be forced to hurt or kill the Caiman to save the life of the photographer.
We have the tech to get very close to wildlife now. We should use it and not go near them as all human do is hurt them, whether that's immediately or in the long run.

While they're some unproven facts and questionable commentary on the animals at time; this is one of the best current documentary on black caiman as a whole. Having the spotlight species be a relatively obscure one from the audience is a daring move. The footage is amazing; great work !

Also I doubt that a caiman has a better sense of smell than a peccary since peccaries rely primarily on scent for finding food and detecting predators. Since they spend much of their lives in water, caiman have extra-sensitive skin for detecting movement in water and good eyesight.

What a marvelous documentary!
At 32:20, caimans are justified of being afraid of giant otters. Sometimes, a group of those otters will actually attack, kill, and eat a lone caiman (somewhat similar to a group of lioness attacking a lone buffalo or a baby elephant in Africa). The caiman have learnt not to mess with giant otters.

Black caiman do in fact grow to be a bit larger than American alligators - little contention about that.
Black Caimans are the exception they are larger than Alligators and they are pound-for-pound the heaviest crocodilians.

Why would you want to do that if you can get it fresh from the river? You make no sense
5 meters?...........try 3 tops. they are exaggerating the size of these animals by quite a bit. dont they know that the audience watching this vid does have eyes!!!!
Not so - 5 meters is a "minimum" maximum length for the black caiman...they likely grow somewhat larger on rare occasion. In the Rupununi region of Guyana at Caiman House Field Station we regularly handle Melanosuchus over 3.5 meter in length = all males at that size (some over 200 kilos body mass) and have evidence from direct observation of animals well over 4 meters and from measured track ways...we are talking about black caiman here, not other species of caiman which yes, are considerably smaller.
