I'm kinda doubtful that anyone who's lived 95 years hasn't encountered homosexuality before. Maybe hasn't been exposed to the idea of an openly gay setting before, especially first hand experience of legal gay marriage, maybe rarely (or never) talked about homosexuality before, maybe takes a minute or two to get on board talking about it with a grandchild... but 95 years is a long, long time and there's more experience in that than your cousin can probably imagine.

It may not be intentional, but the fact that it is most likely to pop with the villager you are pursuing does make it effective as a reference to Harvest Moon/Story of Season's early weirdness about giving you the option to marry the same gender in the female version of a game, but then calling it something else.

To be fair, in Stardew you get the “best friends” achievement when you reach a level 10 friendship with anyone for the first time. Could be a friend, could be a live interest, could be a non-romantic npc, so that meme is super funny because of the timing, but the game itself isn’t doing the erasure thing.

As funny as the meme at 6:46 is, I cannot stand for the Stardew Valley slander! Unless there was a very old version of the game with no gay marriage, you don't need to use mods to live out your lesbian dreams! The game allows you to marry any of the eligible NPCs, male or female, regardless of your character's gender.
As a player of Stardew Valley I can also confirm that when Mayor Lewis officiates girl-girl weddings, he pronounces you “Wife and.. well, wife!” and prolly does the same thing for two boys. Live out your gay farming dreams :)
Also, for what it's worth, that achievement pops up when you hit maximum hearts with an NPC, regardless of which NPC or what your relationship is - if your spouse is the first person you hit max hearts with, it'll pop up at your wedding because you can't hit ten hearts with any of the single NPCs without marrying them.

I don't get the "playing modded Stardew Valley" meme. You can get married to anyone without mods anyways, that has been an option since the game was released. It even has adoption as an option for same sex couples to have kids. On top of that, NPCs have special dialogue when you're dating them while being the same sex as them, recognizing they themselves are LGBTQ+. So wouldn't really blame this game for erasure, the opposite actually.

For why Stardew Valley displays "Best Friends" when you're getting married, there is a reason for it. Pretty much, when you hit 10 hearts with any npc for the first time, you get the best friends achievement. It also just so happens that the prerequisite for proposing to one of the marriage candidates is 10 hearts. So if the first npc you reached 10 hearts with was your future spouse, you would end up getting the Best Friends achievement right before you propose to them. This also happens with straight relationships. It's still really funny though.
Funny story: I’m a ftm. And I recently got my hair cut really short. (I am really happy with it btw cause I really look like a boy now) my classmates were supportive as well. But one person didn’t recognize me and asked the others: “who is that boy over there?” The students who didn’t know I was trans thought that was mean and corrected them. In Stardew Valley you get the best friend achievement when you get to ten hearts with one person. Doesn't matter who the person is or if they're romanceable. In most playthroughs, the first npc i've gotten to ten hearts with is whoever i'm trying to romance. Or pam because her loved gifts are super easy to get early on, so friendship hearts go up faster with her. Either way, it's really just awkward timing for those people who unlocked best friends at their in-game wedding. I wouldn't even know how to do that on purpose.
For context: In stardew valley, when you reach a relationship level of 10 hearts, (Weather you are dating them or not,) you get the achievement "Best friends". SDV is actually a really good example of gay inclusion since not only are you allowed to date other characters of the same gender, but all mechanics in-game are the same as if it is a straight couple. The only difference is that gay couples adopt instead of having biological children, and the character you are in a relationship with may mention not having "felt like this with another [same gender] before"
The stardew valley thing is just they got an achievement for getting their first resident up to 10 friendship. They just happened to get it first with the person who they’re romancing. This can happen whether you’re romancing a character of the same sex or not. You can also get the best friend’s achievement with any other character platonically

The "Best Friends" Achievement in Stardew Valley meme looks like a shop, since you have to already have 10 years of Friendship with a person to propose to them, and the wedding isn't until 3 days after the proposal. That said, it might be that this is a wedding between two players in the multiplayer game. I really don't know how that works as I've not tried to romance a friend in game. Yet. The "Kiss" one is from The Sims. Being "Good Friends" with someone is a prerequisite for becoming romantic with them, so you don't get any of the romantic options, such as "Kiss" or "Hold Hands" until you do. Games can have some weird play dynamics. Embrotherment was a thing, but the dark truth was that it was an allowed thing because two men living together typically results in no children and all of their possessions going to the Chruch upon their deaths. >_
Okay these Stardew Valley ones are really mis representing the game. 1) You don't have to mod the game in order to marry someone of the same gender. All characters are available to marry, no matter the gender. 2) You literally do marry them, they are your spouse and interact with you regardless of the gender your character is. It's a super wholesome game that normalises gay marriage from day 1.
The Stardew Valley one is more of misunderstanding, actually! The Best Friends achievement is for reaching 10 Hearts with an NPC for the first time- which is more likely to happen with whoever the player is pursuing for marriage. Generally, I don't think you would reach it at the wedding... or at least I wouldn't, since I tend to get to the 10 heart point before the marriage proposal part, for games like SDV.

I think the Best Friends achievement in Stardew is just unfortunate timing, because marriage boosts friendship level and you get that achievement when you get to level 10 friendship with someone. So, if you time it right, your wedding becomes a best friend ceremony. Also, who’s to say your partner isn’t your best friend? There’s a more positive spin on it. Edit: No, wait, don’t you only get achievements in Stardew after you go to sleep? So I think they got the Best Friends achievement with their partner on the exact day before their wedding. That’s probably why that’s happening.
Heads up, you don't need to mod Stardew Valley to woo your favorite NPCs (if they are one of the 12 designated characters). The game does not care whether your farmer is gay or straight. However, you will need to mod your game if you want an NB farmer as the game unfortunately assumes m/f. However there are some really cute scenes with family members that are different if you are M/M or F/F that do not come up if you are playing as a straight person.
the sims one is just sims being weird, you need a certain amount of friendship level to start romance, and if you try to start with a kiss, you'd need best friend level (as an example of other levels, you can flirt at "acquaintances", give rose or other minor romantic gestures at "friends", be alluring/act flirtatious/other major romantic gestures at "good friends" and as shown kiss at "best friends")

To be fair, in Stardew you get the “best friends” achievement when you reach a level 10 friendship with anyone for the first time. Could be a friend, could be a live interest, could be a non-romantic npc, so that meme is super funny because of the timing, but the game itself isn’t doing the erasure thing.

As funny as the meme at 6:46 is, I cannot stand for the Stardew Valley slander! Unless there was a very old version of the game with no gay marriage, you don't need to use mods to live out your lesbian dreams! The game allows you to marry any of the eligible NPCs, male or female, regardless of your character's gender.

Also, for what it's worth, that achievement pops up when you hit maximum hearts with an NPC, regardless of which NPC or what your relationship is - if your spouse is the first person you hit max hearts with, it'll pop up at your wedding because you can't hit ten hearts with any of the single NPCs without marrying them.

I don't get the "playing modded Stardew Valley" meme. You can get married to anyone without mods anyways, that has been an option since the game was released. It even has adoption as an option for same sex couples to have kids. On top of that, NPCs have special dialogue when you're dating them while being the same sex as them, recognizing they themselves are LGBTQ+. So wouldn't really blame this game for erasure, the opposite actually.

For why Stardew Valley displays "Best Friends" when you're getting married, there is a reason for it. Pretty much, when you hit 10 hearts with any npc for the first time, you get the best friends achievement. It also just so happens that the prerequisite for proposing to one of the marriage candidates is 10 hearts. So if the first npc you reached 10 hearts with was your future spouse, you would end up getting the Best Friends achievement right before you propose to them. This also happens with straight relationships. It's still really funny though.

Funny story: I’m a ftm. And I recently got my hair cut really short. (I am really happy with it btw cause I really look like a boy now) my classmates were supportive as well. In Stardew Valley you get the best friend achievement when you get to ten hearts with one person. Doesn't matter who the person is or if they're romanceable. In most playthroughs, the first npc i've gotten to ten hearts with is whoever i'm trying to romance. Or pam because her loved gifts are super easy to get early on, so friendship hearts go up faster with her. Either way, it's really just awkward timing for those people who unlocked best friends at their in-game wedding. I wouldn't even know how to do that on purpose.

For context: In stardew valley, when you reach a relationship level of 10 hearts, (Weather you are dating them or not,) you get the achievement "Best friends". SDV is actually a really good example of gay inclusion since not only are you allowed to date other characters of the same gender, but all mechanics in-game are the same as if it is a straight couple. The only difference is that gay couples adopt instead of having biological children, and the character you are in a relationship with may mention not having "felt like this with another [same gender] before"

That said, it might be that this is a wedding between two players in the multiplayer game. I really don't know how that works as I've not tried to romance a friend in game. Yet.
The "Kiss" one is from The Sims. Being "Good Friends" with someone is a prerequisite for becoming romantic with them, so you don't get any of the romantic options, such as "Kiss" or "Hold Hands" until you do.

1) You don't have to mod the game in order to marry someone of the same gender. All characters are available to marry, no matter the gender.
2) You literally do marry them, they are your spouse and interact with you regardless of the gender your character is.
It's a super wholesome game that normalises gay marriage from day 1.

The Stardew Valley one is more of misunderstanding, actually! The Best Friends achievement is for reaching 10 Hearts with an NPC for the first time- which is more likely to happen with whoever the player is pursuing for marriage. Generally, I don't think you would reach it at the wedding... or at least I wouldn't, since I tend to get to the 10 heart point before the marriage proposal part, for games like SDV.
Btw, the "best friends" achievement is satirical i think. The game is called Stardew valley, and you can have a gay romance. It's great.

I think the Best Friends achievement in Stardew is just unfortunate timing, because marriage boosts friendship level and you get that achievement when you get to level 10 friendship with someone. So, if you time it right, your wedding becomes a best friend ceremony.

Edit: No, wait, don’t you only get achievements in Stardew after you go to sleep? So I think they got the Best Friends achievement with their partner on the exact day before their wedding. That’s probably why that’s happening.
Heads up, you don't need to mod Stardew Valley to woo your favorite NPCs (if they are one of the 12 designated characters). The game does not care whether your farmer is gay or straight. However, you will need to mod your game if you want an NB farmer as the game unfortunately assumes m/f. However there are some really cute scenes with family members that are different if you are M/M or F/F that do not come up if you are playing as a straight person.
the sims one is just sims being weird, you need a certain amount of friendship level to start romance, and if you try to start with a kiss, you'd need best friend level
(as an example of other levels, you can flirt at "acquaintances", give rose or other minor romantic gestures at "friends", be alluring/act flirtatious/other major romantic gestures at "good friends" and as shown kiss at "best friends")
