The beauty of Toku is there is something for everyone from children to adults.
Maybe it should be called the "Big Three of Tokusatsu _Duos_ ", with the colorful heroes team duo (Super Sentai and Power Rangers), the lone human hero that still packs a punch duo (Kamen Rider and Garo) and the GIANT duo (Ultraman and Godzilla).
I never realized it but yeah you can put toku in those three archetypes well.
Can you really put Super Sentai and Power Rangers as seperate things though?
@@chechilcheeser I think it would be the same as putting Gojira 1954 and Godzilla: King of the Monsters 1956 as separate things.
Metal Heroes of course! They're just on hiatus, that's all...
Nah it's actually tomica heroes
Let it go, pal. Let it go.
If no one will reboot it then I’m going to make fan fic and post it on my CZcams channel
Sadly, there isnt a place for Metal Hero. It did its job. It was Toei's experimental franchise that filled the gap left by Kamen Rider. When Rider came back during Kuuga. Metal Hero was obsolete.
@@PowerPackers90 atleast we can sleep knowing that space sheriff gavan will eventually make a return
I feel that Garo has a connection, a pertinent one, with Skull Man, Kamen Rider's father concept, and the Heisei run from Kuuga to Decade.
Garo was pitched as a live action Golden Bat.
and Golden Bat was what inspired Ishinomori to create his heroes.
You know what's funny. One time someone hacked my mom's Amazon account and bought a copy of Garo but forgot to change the shipping. We were so confused when we got it.
Kewl, I guess
Garo didn't go MIA because Pachinko machines shut down during the pandemic. It's because Japan passed a new law that limited how much revenue Pachinko machines got. Or something like that. Basically, because of this new law, Garo's main source of income to fund the show was severed. So they have no money to produce a new show.
In that case, maybe it's for the best Versus Road ended with the new Garo throwing down his sword and going "fuck it, I'm done, nothing is worth what I went through to get this sword."
Where did you hear this
@@muffnman980 From Kotetsu Toys Japan. Though we now see they were able to get funding for Heir to Steel Armor. But they clearly don't have enough to pump out shows like they used to during the 2010s.
Garo deserves more love. Its the Berserk of Japanese superheroes
More like the King of Seijin Anime
Garo absolutely deserves more love. It's just a shame that there has been nothing since Versus Road
@@mikulitsi1819Well there's a new season now, but it's continuing the Ryuga timeline instead of picking up from VR, which is unfortunate as I wanted to see more of VR's world.
Garo is one of if not the biggest adult oriented tokusatsu franchise and I love it for its choreography and art direction. I was actually rewatching it on the official CZcams channel. First season was a bit repetitive but it really gets going with Season 2 and makes you really appreciate how the series connects. There’s an anime timeline as well but I don’t know much about it, both because I am still watching the main universe stuff and a lot of people only know Season 3 anyway, which is Vanishing Line.
I recently watched garo and I'm hooked.
There's 3 anime of Garo, all set in different universes.
@@MebiMangaNo, the anime is set in the same universe, just at different points in time, the first season is during the Spanish Inquisition, the second season is in the Heian period of Japan and the third season is in modern/futuristic America
Fun fact, after some years Final Fantasy XIV would bring back the Garo pvp event. It's over now but it lasted quite a while. I was able to grind for the Garo, Zero, and Barago armors ^-^
I was lucky enough to start playing FFXIV when they brought this event back. That was footage of My character standing in front of My house lol
@@GleamingGarmore Whoa funny story I actually found your edit of the Mugen Rebirth cover a few months ago
10:59 You mean a Big Henshin Hero 6😆
Good one!
I need to finish a Garo. Godzilla to me is the pitch roof of witch sits atop those pillars you speak of.
Garo is freakin amazing! Glad you mentioned it, Marcos. Out of all the Toku, its my ultimate fave.
There is an anime adaptation of Garo
I always thought that the Plus One was unofficially Precure considering their timeslot
Well if you're talking about Toei alone, then precure can be counted as their big three super hero franchises
Technically Precure can be counted as a subclass for the magical girl genre
Precure isn’t tokusatsu though, so it couldn’t be
When will you guys learn; tokusatsu doesn't always just mean "transforming superheroes."
They will always be live action foremost, even when there are CGI characters like Donbrothers, Shin Godzilla and Garo Yamitera.
Precure are superhero-themed anime, but they're not tokusatsu.
Before you bring up Fuuto PI, SSSS.Gridman, etc., they're spin-off from the tokusatsu franchise.
Metal Hero and Giant Robo may not be pillars per se. But they are great shows in their own right and I like them.
And metal heroes inspired robocop so there's that.
Big 3
or most likely Big Marketable 3
Good thing about Garo is, it uses elements from past Tokusatsus and blend it with Modern use of technology, heck any one missed those extended well choreographed civilian fight scenes now extended, also those moments when they relay on their intellects to get out of sticky situations, rather than use a new toy to power up or get out of danger
Hmmmmm what if Garo is Marketable..... A Talking Zaruba(sounds only), Makai Knights and Horror Vinyl figures, DX Gōten, Build a Figure series, collect all Build a Figure Garo series and assemble a 12 Inch figure of Messiah...
Garo isn’t marketable because it’s mainly aimed for adults, not kids.
Ultraman, Super Sentai, and Kamen Rider are marketable because those three are mainly targeted for kids.
I picked up all the Blurays for GARO that Kracken Releasing put out, damn shame we havent gotten the rest of it. Would love for Disotek Media to do a license rescue and put all of it out at some point. Its such a fantastic series.
Big three sounds like it should be distinct from the pillars of toku. Big three is more about being currently active compared to being a pillar which started a/the trend or set a standard (Supaida-Man being a pillar for introducing mecha into toku shows). For example, Golden Bat/Ougon Batto is definitely a pillar of toku (being the oldest known toku character to exist) but he's also definitely not part of the big three. It's roughly the same as saying Mazinger-Z is a pillar for mecha anime (it's part of the holy trinity as the first piloted giant robot compared to Getter Robo being the first combiner and shape-shifter super robot and the RX-78-2 Gundam being the first real robot) but isn't a big player in the current scene (because I think mecha anime doesn't have a big three currently; it's Gundam and other new shows that are currently running).
So, with that distinction, I'm not sure GARO can fit as part of the big three but it might have a space for being how modern adult-oriented toku can be done. So, it has a "maybe" position as a pillar at best. The big three still remains as Ultras, Riders, Sentai.
Garo was a nice change as things were more dark and gritty were as most other toku shows seem more kid friendly
I dont think it's part of the "Big Three" but maybie it's something that embrace things of the Big Three
"and" metal hero, if not for japan, Metal heroes are really popular in brazil
I had not heard of Garo before this video, but I am intrigued now. Thank you for shedding some light on this ambitious-sounding series.
Oh, I've seen Garo on one of guild card backgrounds in Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate
There's a Garo armour in either Generations or XX, with the sword as a GS
In my mind Toku is made up of the big 3 of Sentai Rider and Ultraman, extendable to a big 5 with Metal Heroes and Garo. Though Metal Heroes only holds that spot as it filled in for Rider in the 80-90's and still maintains some relevence through occasional appearances. I don't count Godzilla because in the west the toku fandom is really more the henshin hero fandom so it's a seperate thing. I also wouldn't count Power Rangers because while it's a big franchise, it doesn't deserve a place as at it's core it's just lesser sentai. Analytically it never has been as good as sentai as a whole, if only because of the odd rules of what japan allows in kid shows. Most sentai have enough depth that they can be enjoyed by all ages, it's realistic someone could get into it as an adult never having seen it before (that's most of the western fans). Where as Power Rangers, good as some seasons are, has almost 0 appeal for an adult audience who didn't grow up with it. It's hobbled by the restrictiveness of american live action kids shows that has only grown worse over the decades rendering it increasingly infantalized.
This take 100%
Metal Heroes MOST DEFINITELY deserves to be added as a pillar! Saban introducing Metal Heroes via VR Troopers & Beetle Borgs to an American audience makes it a big part of 90s pop culture
Garo is not recommended as being "plus one". I think that the "plus one" are labelled as the "others" which consist of Garo, Metal Heroes, Godzilla, etc.
When the other toku were 24 minutes toys ads, Garo was 24 minutes pachinko ads, and I love it!!!
While Makai Senki was the best season, I still wait for hopefully next season
Garo deserves crossovers with the likes of Godzilla, Gundam, Gamera, and many others!!!
You can also thank KARAS for being an influence on GARO
Aren't there 6 big toku?
Godzilla
Sentai
Rider
Ultra
Metal Heroes
Garo
Yeah
This video has made me decide to watch Garo. I'm a recent Toku fan and Garo was one i came across on accident but wasn't sure if i wanted to watch it sooner or later. but as soon as I get the opportunity i'ma have to watch it finally
Garo sleeps no more!
We are back to visiting the era of Ryuga Dogai in Heir to Steel Armor!
It’s sad that metal heroes is still not given a spot at the table… my favorite toku has always been Tokkei Winspector and it’s sad to see that metal heroes has been left on the wayside for so many fans
Nice video folks, great editing by your editor too. Also, it's Keita Amemiya, not Amamiya. Thank you for mentioning GARO and Gojira. :)
Solid video here, man. Good job.
I think Godzilla isn't counted as a pillar because here in the west. Tokusatsu has pretty much became a blanket term for " Japanese superheroes". Kinda like how anime here means "Japanese cartoons" where in Japan it's just a nickname for cartoons. SpongeBob in Japan is called an anime.
GARO IS GOOD TOO MAN CHECK IT OUT...do a history look into the reboot
I love Garo!
Godzilla is more like the bedrock the pillars of Tokusatsu are built on, being the franchise that started the genre and all
Garo is what got me into the genre.
I kept saying where are the metal heroes and Garo, good choice
I'm so happy that I found Tokosatsu a year ago and power rangers got me into it. I would like to see some of the newer Sentai series
My TOKUSATSU Big Three are SUPER SENTAI, KAMEN RIDER And Garo and My Plus One is POWER RANGERS . P.S. Hey MARCOSATSU Can you do SUPER SENTAI ENDING Themes. And Favorite SUPER SENTAI ENDINGS.
My personal big 3 has always been Kamen Rider, Garo, and Super Sentai. Ultraman missing me because I found it so much later with so much history behind it already and because I found Tokusatsu when I was older Garo spoke to me more. Super Sentai and Ultraman are honestly interchangeable to me based on the specific entry if it gets me interested.
I watch every new season of Kamen Rider and Garo (when we get it). Ultraman and Super Sentai I can take or leave depending on if the entry interests me.
Whenever I saw DonBrother's frenemies(Sonoi, Sononi and Sonoza), I think they are metal heroes. I'm thinking that Donbrothers is Sentai vs Metal heroes.
Actually, they are based on other toei heroes
Wouldn't Godzilla be a part of the Big Four of Toku?
Yes
Godzilla is the king above all, its ascended from being part of the ranking
I started my love affair with Tokusatsu back in 2016. Because there were so much to see, I started things off with Kamen Rider, Super Sentai, Ultraman, AND Garo. So those are the big four for me.
Thank you for this video. I loved Garo
3:52 I remember France 5 man, good times.
I believe power rangers is good enough to be its own thing while it started out as one thing its grown to be able to stand on its own
yeahh but what i see for next season is a complet basterdazion of of both Kiramager and Kyuurangers and not to forget Ryuusoulgers . Istill dont get why the hell in Dino Fury there ouse The exculisive costumes of Kiramager VS Ryuusoulgers the movie .because in the Ryuusoulgers series they dont have a Super form . Power rangers was good as a Child but i saw now the Japanese OG Version and these are far more better in terms of Story and Chars
@@kevinbaumhoer7359 if you mean cosmic fury I heard about things they did in it..
since hasbro in charge now its become more about toy sales
Garo got me into Toku.
QUICK! Everybody get a terrible gambling addiction! We need more Garo! STAT!
I can see how Garo could be an important series. It doesn't really seem like something up my alley, but I get why it would be important.
Garo is like digimon, Its a big player but doesnt know how to properly capatalize on it
garo started out as a revival of golden bat a hero from the 1930s
As a castlevania fan, watching garo is a catharsis for me. It's just a gothic, dark thing. I love it.
Disappointed at the lack of Gridman mention in this video, even if it’s not really tokusatsu anymore, you still mentioned Mirrorman 2D
0:00 gonna love that picture
“Where’s Gekko Kamen today?”
*looks at Sononi*
Maybe they should do Redman with an actual budget. So there can be a big 4. Well 5 when Godzilla is banging out stuff.
Yes but I won't watch it fully until they bring golden bat (ougon batto) (THE inspiration of garo) to the series or some kind of him
Garo has 3 anime seasons and kamen rider w has an anime called fuuto pi that takes place after the series... I love it
One thing that has all three is a lot of explosions...lots of explosions
Ryukendo was really good.
Garo needs more attention.. it was my first actual toku and I loved it ever since! GARO
Ngl, haven’t heard of Garo until now. Admittedly I’m not that deep into Tokusatsu but I guess it’s nice to someone bring up something other than Kamen Rider and Sentai.
Garo is great, but at least for me personally, I think about Metal Heroes far more than I think of Garo... Between both of it's American Adaptations, VR Troopers and Beetleborgs, to it's reboots and Sentai crossovers about a decade ago. To it's first being seen in the US in over 20 years in Power Rangers Beast Morphers with them using the Go Buster v Gavan footage.
Garo only crosses my mind when it crosses my path... "Oh, they made a new Garo anime and it's on Netflix? Cool."
Redman is above and beyond the big three. You should do a video about him.
the GodFather and Big 3 Shonen,
Dragon Ball, One Piece, Naruto, and Bleach
the GodFather and Big 3 Tokusatsu, Godzilla, Ultraman, Kamen Rider, and Super Sentai
The godfather of Shonen Ring no kakeru followed by Hokuto no Ken and Saint seiya
I'm not sure where you were getting at with Metal Heroes. I see its influence all the time.
Well, maybe not all the time, but I certainly see its influence a lot.
nah yeah, I'm all for recognizing PR as a pillar of Toku.
I just wish the west give it recognition beyond just being a kid's show.
I consider Garo a modern wuxia, the choreography is always so damn good
For anime the big 3 are bleach, naruto and one piece. There is dragon ball that has a similar big presence, but that is seen as the dad show of the big 3, also boruto (naruto's spin off) is seen as a branch since yes it dose try and be different but the same. U could argue that a similar structure can be made here with Godzilla as the dad. Kamen rider, super sentai and ultra man as the big 3 with power rangers as a branch to sentai and garo could be seen as the chiled of the big 3 since the brighter of garo worked in all the big 3
Ryukendo was my childhood ❤
GARO 2024 BABYYYYYYY!!!!!
Godzilla is its own thing, it's the foundation for which the others stand on. Rider, Sentai, and Ultraman are the pillars. PR and the Korean versions are stones in that pillar. never heard of Garo so i don't think it could be a pillar. Garo is another layer of Tokusatsu that builds off of the Big Three, same with the Metal Heroes
For me it's big four. Garo definitely should be included although it's sad that there has been nothing since Versus Road
Heck, I could argue Garo shares something with Ultraman too. A show where good vs Evil is at the fundamental center of the show.
i love garo both the toku and the anime i wish we would get a new season
The Big Six Of Tokusatsu
Godzilla brought monsters, monsters brought Ultraman, Ultraman brought heros, heros brought Kamen Rider... and multiple X5 = Super Sentai
i would say Tomica had an instant classic on their hands with Rescue Force/ Rescue Fire, but I don't think they made another after Rescue Fire!
Woooohhhh Garo!
Godzilla is pretty much the Dragon Ball of the Big Three Tokusatsu
It came out before most of them and is debatabley the most successful movie in the world of Tokusatsu and paved the way for giant movie monsters
I find it strange that you kept trying to separate Super Sentai and Power Ranger so far apart. I haven't really watched much of Power Ranger, but I would assume it's not too different from Super Sentai beyond recognizable. Just clump them both in. Best thing to compare would be Godzilla and Mothra. Mothra technically is an entire separate property outside of the Godzilla franchise. Yet people just clump her in with Godzilla stuff anyway because they constantly intermingle.
Gotta give this a 7/10
@marcosatsu do you have or know possibly a list for Garo in chronological order?
Big six of Toku is Gojira, Ultraman, Kamen Rider, Himitsu Sentai Goranger, GARO and Uchuu Keiji Gavan.
I remember coming across Garo when my Power Rangers fandom restarted and in the wake of seeing Karas. It was the perfect Toku show for a college kid. Violent, edgy, "adult power rangers" and with the right amount of foreign strangeness to someone that just doesn't know any better. We got Amazons because of Garo. And I wonder if Giam wouldnt have happened too.
On the topic of the Big 3, that term comes from Shonen jump being saved from being discontinued with Bleach, Naruto, and One Piece being incomprehensibly popular both domestic and internationally. And now it's just used to refer to the top 3 titles. In that respect, I think saying Kamen Rider, Sentai, and Ultraman as the Big 3 is appropriate because those are the merchandising giants that the popular knowledge of Toku is built upon. Maybe saying Power Rangers instead of Sentai is more accurate because of how much more international impact it as where as Kamen Rider has more popularity domestically.
Gransazers, justirisers, sazer-x are live action series of tokusatsu but a other genre.
As a HUGE Godzilla fan, I would absolutely call Godzilla a pillar IF you count Kaiju stuff as just under the Toku umbrella, or like carved out it's own niche. Like most Toku stuff encoporates Kaiju stuff, but like especially in the west people think of Kaiju stuff as completely separate from Power Rangers (and the rest if they even know about them). Idk like Kaiju is for sure Toku, but the sub genre (especially Godzilla) has kinda surpassed the larger genre. Like you'd be hard pressed to find anyone outside of the Tokusatsu fan base, (at least outside of Japan) to take stuff like Sentai or Ultraman seriously, but they will absolutely judge a Godzilla film on it's merits. Also like there are actually western blockbusters that feature giant monsters, Clover Field, Pacific Rim (although that one is kinda a love letter to Toku), and of course America's very own Kaiju Royalty Kong. Hell even western produced Godzilla films.
So that was a very drawn out verbose way to say, I think the only way you can justify Godzilla not being a pillar of Toku, is if you consider Kaiju or at the very least Godzilla to be larger than & separate from Toku. Because there is certainly an argument for it.
I would honestly say the big 3 for toku would be power rangers, super sentai and kamen rider. With ultraman filling a more dragon ball z esque role in the whole genre.
I include power rangers as one of them because its the gateway to toku, regardless. Most people who started their toku journey started with power rangers, since its a westernized version of toku.
hopefully we will get some new garo soon
For nearly two decades, instead of the traditional big three franchises, there are currently the big four franchises in terms of Tokusatsu influence.
Welp big 3 is not just use for toku we use from other thing right but i with is for more what is popular at the moment
Sentai, Kamen Rider and Metal Heroes, right? Right...
Edit: at the point in the video now where you basically called me out now. My serious response already shifted to Gojira, Toei and Ultraman. Although at that point I might as well say Toho, Toei and Tsuburaya?
Also, nearly forgot, "Where are they today?", aside from older incarnations being revived, absorbed into Kamen Rider basically.
At 7:15 does anyone know where I can find that specific seen or what the title of the clip is or which Garo series and episode it is from?
It's from Versus Road. It's from the backstory of the game master somewhere near the end of the series. Haven't seen it for a while so I don't know the specific ep.
@@seanchoy236 thanks
Ok I need to ask which Sentai show is that at 2:05 with long pink

So, you could call them the⋯

how about... the emissary of hell, SUPAIDAMAN!?
