He is referring to the sides, having to be "flat" vs. ridged.

I have a 68 dime that is magnetic, but its tarnished like a silver one...Ive never seen nickel tarnished in this way..its almost rainbow toned...dark like youd see on something silver.
I know they had some 50/50 blanks left over from the 1967 Centennials and thats how you get SOME partly silver 1968s..
Is 50% nickel not enough to be magnetic?...
