    I am discussing the best packing method in a carryon suitcase - packing cubes or rolling - for your clothes. I will test and review rolling my 13 outfits as well as packing my clothes in cubes. Since my suitcase is a carry on, I need a packing method that takes up less space. I want to maximize the space I do have so that I can bring 13 outfits and 5 tennis shoes with me. Thanks for POPping by!

    Well before I had ever heard of packing cubes, I started using that method. But instead of purchasing cubes, I just use the clear plastic packaging that bed sheets are sold in. LOVE them. Love that they are clear and you can pull them out and see exactly where (nearly) each piece of clothing is. Pack my workout clothes in one and it saves so much mess of reorganizing the suitcase each time you need something. And, they're free!

    Hi Laurie, I notice many folks remark on the rolling technique. The real reason flight attendants roll clothes is to avoid having to iron them. If you fold your clothes before you roll- you’ll have wrinkles. Avoid any folding along the front (visible) panel of any item of clothes, Also, I would advise against packing your clothes next to your shoes (yuck). Shoe bags (even plastic bags) help. My best tip is to make sure as many of your clothes co-ordinate with EACH OTHER as possible - therefore expanding your options once you arrive - and also stress the importance of Layering clothes instead of packing heavy things - weather and temps change throughout the day and having options for hot then cold (in some countries/seasons) is paramount. One other thing that I ALWAYS try to do now is to pack two pairs of underwear and a nice shirt in a carryon - in case my suitcase gets lost/misses my connection. And DO NOT FORGET to put a TILE into a suitcase (GPS tracking) so when you are waiting at the baggage pick up - and your suitcase doesn’t come out - you can see if it made your connection. Also, do not forget to pack a laundry bag so you can separate your dirty from clean closthes if you go to multiple destinations (just helps also to keep things straight). Lastly - do not pack you luggage completely full - leave space for some purchases of clothes on your holiday - you will remember your trip everytime you wear them. Hope some of these are useful to pass on . . .

    We recently traveled for 2 weeks in England, Scotland and Iceland and used packing cubes for the first time. We each took only 1 carry-on, which was terrific, as our connection was too short (due to late first flight) for our luggage to have joined us at the destination! I didn't use the huge cube, but used the medium sized ones. I carefully rolled 8 dress shirts for my husband in one. I made them the width of the cube and rolled with collars at the top and carefully placed them in cube. I did the same for slacks. A smaller cube held all underwear. For me, I had one cube with several dresses, another with other outfits and a third with what I would need in the colder climate of Iceland. It was terrific. Nothing wrinkled and we were able to keep organized. We just unpacked what we needed each day. We brought the larger bag and used it for laundry as things became soiled. I had never thought of packing cubes, but am hooked now! Your videos are nice and you have a sweet personality! All the best!I P.S. I think your first packing of just rolled clothing would mean you would have to re-pack and re-organize all the time!

      I understand the theory, Christopher, but I would never put anything else in the bag in which I packed my filthy (at least on the bottoms) shoes. I would just save the bags for the return trip. And if grocery bags float your boat - pun intended - just neatly fold a few extra into your suitcase - they take up no room, and they're good for separating your dirty laundry to go back into the cubes or suitcase for your return.

    I agree with Melinda. I love packing cubes. I also use ebags. I like the medium the best but use the large for long pants. The luggage would be a mess without packing cubes. Here’s why I like the cubes. I can pack different categories in each cube. On a recent trip I had work for one week, followed by a wedding and then 5 days at a monastery. I put all of my items for the final trip in one medium sized cube and knew I never had to open it till then. Same with the wedding. So at the first hotel I took out 2 cubes for the business trip and the rest stayed in the bag. She used one very large cube. Two medium cubes would likely have worked better.

    I actually invested in Eagle Creek packing cubes when my luggage was a rollable backpack. Carrying it around Asia on my back was a whole lot easier than wheeling it, and there's much less structure to that type of luggage. Sure, I could roll it in the airport, but on the streets, I was wearing it on my back. It's much easier to have 4 small or medium cubes than one large one. Having a large one is like packing a suitcase to put in your suitcase... what's the point of that?

    • @TravelTipsbyLaurie
      @TravelTipsbyLaurie  Před 6 lety +3

    I use ebags packing cubes, the slim long size (6x14"). They are well made and worth the price. Three of these size packing cubes, packed FULL of rolled clothes will hold 40 pieces of clothing (tshirt, blouses, shirts, leggings, pants, jeans, jackets, raincoat, underwear, night clothes, etc). Twenty+ tops will go in one of them easily.. The cubes must be packed tight with rolled up clothes and the zipper inched up until cube is full. So the big cube you bought is useless for serious cube packing. May organize clothes, but will not allow you to pack all you will need.
    The weight of the suitcase will not be reduced, but the bulk of the suitcase will be cut in half. When I went to Canada last year, I had 3 slim long ebags cubes, and one medium square to hold extra jeans and sweaters. My 25" suitcase (checked) was only half full.
    I never take more than two pairs of shoes and never change on the plane. I carry a small wheeled ebags rollie bag onto the plane for my camera, computer, etc. It has an organizer in front pocket for my tickets and phone, keys etc.
    Closed shoes are better with all those wheels rolling thru the airport, and they can still slip on and off at TSA. So only one pr of shoes in suitcase, one on my feet. I put my toiletries in a small Eagle Creek mini toiletry bag, small sizes, no extra bottles etc. The bigger the makeup bag, the more stuff you cram into it.

    I like to use cubes in our large family suitcase. I pack my underwear and socks in one, my husband's in one, my teen's in another. When we get to the ship or hotel, I put each person's cube in their drawer. I also hang each person's dress clothes up in the closet right away. Emptied suitcases get put away in a closet or under the bed. Done! It makes it easier for me to unpack and get everyone organized for the length of our vacation.

    I always roll my clothes very tightly. I separate them in different themes such as underwear, tops/cardigans, trousers/dresses, sportswear, rain clothes, shoes (which I don't roll ;-)) and then I roll each garment and squeeze them (also very tightly) into quite smaller packing cubes than the one you used. This makes the packing into the suitcase more flexible. And I have one empty pouch for laundry. This keeps my luggage organized, and I get the benefit from both the space-saving rolling and the cubes. I always know where everything is. I have many sorts and sizes of packing cubes - also the type you have. The zippers are still OK, and I have been using them for a long time.

Packing cubes 100% all the way it's the only way to keep your stuff extremely organized and you never take out what you're not going to use!!!!! I don't use that rollup method for me because it's just not organized enough for me!! I need just my going out clothes in one, my play clothes in another and my pajamas & underwear in another cube....if I'm not going out and just only to slam click I just take out the cube with pajamas! I got my packing cubes at ikea, and I used them more for organization in my checked bag than compression or space saving (though I'm a TERRIBLE overpacker; I'm trying to improve). I did use one of the double sided ones in my carry on to hold a couple of outfits for my husband and I in case our luggage was somehow lost. So 2 tops, a pair of shorts, socks, underwear and a bathing suit each. Mine was one side of the cube and his was the other. We were flying on a budget airline and it was more expensive to have a carry on than to check a bag. So we each had a checked bag, and one carry on to hold emergency clothes on the way down, and overflow shopping on the way back.

    Nice work on the rolling. If you practiced with the cubes you would be as good at using them as you are at rolling.
    I find that if I fold clothes to roughly the size of the cube that it saves space. Fold the edges in toward the centre so you don't wind up with a crease down the middle.
    Also choose cubes that fit efficiently in your carry-on. Then you won't be left with funky spaces in which you can't really fit anything. I use cubes for some things and not for others; depends, but usually dictated by function. Running clothes in a cube except for running shoes, but socks and other run things go in the shoes. Smaller things in stuff sacks that fit in odd spaces.
    In the end, the volume of your stuff is the same. Just don't pack air, so fold or roll efficiently, either way works.

    Hi Laurie, if you use COMPRESSION PACKING CUBES, like the ones from Eagle Creek, Patagonia, or REI, then you save way more space than if you simply rolled them and placed open in the carry-on. I travel full-time out of a 40L backpack and it doubles my capacity. Hope this helps :)

    The last time we went out of the country, we used the cubes. We just started last year and had tops in one, size appropriate (SA), bottoms in another cube, again SA, undergarments in the smallest size, with shoes, as you do, around the edges. When we needed something, we found the appropriate cube, removed it, and Bob’s your uncle. No digging through 3 suitcases to find the one top you know is there somewhere. We bought Pro packing cubes as well as eBags and Amazon Basics. All from Amazon, obviously, and all worked equally well and were affordable.

    Laurie, I have found in my travels that there is no right or wrong way in packing for everyone. For instance I do use my packing cubes differently to you, by rolling I can pack several days worth of casual outfits maybe 3 days worth plus an extra top including undies, socks & bras in a medium one. I also don’t take more than 2 prs of shoes plus the ones I am wearing and my travel slippers that fold up in my personal bag. I have another one with my bathing suits, cover up, nightie or lounge wear. My casual wear for vacations is on the nicer side and I also bring a couple of dresses for a little more formal nights. By no means have I travelled as much as you.

    • @jessicakennedy9885
      @jessicakennedy9885 Před 5 lety

      I do this actually, but instead of vacuuming - since I won't have one where I land, I compress the air out manually in a not-so-elegant method. I roll my clothes inside the space bag and get 'em in there tight. I get the space bag about half closed then I roll the space bag. As I roll it, I stick it underneath me so I can let my weight help press out any air, when I'm at the end of rolling the space bag, I've gotten a majority of the air out, and I close the bag the rest of the way. When flattened, it takes up VERY little room. I also pack clothes that don't need ironing and will show minimal wrinkles and none if laid out the night before wearing. Hope that helps!

    I rolled my clothes once and they got very wrinkled. Now I use packing cubes. A folder type for tops and I can fit 12 tops in a very small space. If you use packing cubes correctly, they actually compress the clothes and you can fit almost twice as much in. I use a small one for underwear and socks and it has the double zipper compression. One has all my nighttime stuff. very easy to find what I'm looking for and which cube to open. Pants I use a larger cube and that goes on the bottom with the other 2 over it so I just have 2 layers of packing

    This last trip I tried packing cubes. I folded the clothes and placed them in the cubes in a stack, zipped them and and stood them upright in my suitcase, the way you’d display books on a shelf. Our rooms in Guatemala had nowhere to unpack so we had to live out of our suitcases. Dumb luck, I discovered that I could unzip each cube as I needed it, while still in the suitcase, only unzipping the side facing me and could then see all the clothes in the cube similar to a file cabinet, and could then remove, and replace items without disturbing the whole lot. This would only work with the ones with double zippers.

    There are these *COMPRESSION* packing cubes, not just ordinary packing cubes, that can further compress the packed up cubes to create more space in the luggage. I can't say whether or how wrinkled the unpacked clothes would be though ... I will find out when I use these for my next cruise.
    One thing all these packing videos is that people (wisely) bring clothes made of knit fabrics (not get wrinkled so easily, and if wrinkled, then some steam in the shower fixes it.) What about woven fabrics? They get wrinkle if compressed too tightly and needs ironing after unpacking. I am going to bring a lot of dresses to my next cruise made of woven material ... haven't seen one video that addresses this dilemma.

    • @ExtraordinaryLiving
      @ExtraordinaryLiving Před 7 lety +1

      Irons are considered fire hazards (as are many electrical devices that produce heat), therefore they are not furnished in cruise ship staterooms; also is reason that we are not allowed to bring our own on board. I heard that some cruise lines would lend passengers an iron for a few hours, others offer pressing service (for a fee of course.)
      Thanks for your suggestion. Yea, upon further research, it seems others agree that folding the easy-to-wrinkle items is better than rolling them, and there is a third method too, called "bundle wrapping".

    My approach to packing cubes is to store like with like... I think of them as 'drawers' in my luggage. My cubes are all different colours and sizes which I have mentally colour-coded to streamline my travel organisation. And I also put my shoes in shoe bags. My husband likes to pack his shoes full of socks, but I prefer to pack my shoes with tissue, which - while it adds slightly to the weight - it increases the freshness of my tights and socks when I wear them!

    Everyone packs differently, I'm impressed you got all that in a carry on, bravo!!! Curious about how you pack toiletries, that's always my downfall.....

      I have a couple of liquids videos, but the main way for getting liquids in a carryon is to lay them horizontally in the 3 oz bag...I stored them vertically for over 10 years. Finally figured it out ha. Happy travels!

    You need to learn to Ranger roll. There are several good videos on YT. Ranger rolling compresses each shirt. The perfect Ranger roll starts with the shirt face down and collar closest to you.

    Nice video.... however I just watched another YT? Video and the lady used the cubes and packed way more than what you packed. It's your method. She was packed neater. You just started throwing things in the suitcase. ?????

      I find its better to pack less so it can be packed less neat because each time you move places you're going to have to repack and if you spend any less time or attention packing your case is going to be bulging. Better to have some leeway-- packing super neat leaving you extra room and packing less neat but still have enough room.

    I can see a lot of potential for more space. I highly recommend checking out how to do the military roll.

    I used cubes for my first international trip to Egypt for two weeks in June. I have one fairly small suitcase and was able to organize and pack everything I needed with them. It took careful planning since tank tops and shorts were not options. I rolled my stuff, and utilized all my space, while making sure I never went over any weight limits. The cubes seemed to be very helpful and I could find what I needed easily.

    If your trip is to one destination, I don't see much advantage to packing cubes, but if you have multiple stops then all your stuff can be sorted into shirts, underwear, etc. I don't see the point of such a large cube either. The point is to have categories. I would NEVER take 5 shoes, but then I don't think I own 5 pair of shoes either, :) BTW, you might be interested in checking out Sarah Murdoch. Seems you two might have a lot in common, .She shows the best packing cube technique,

    Are you familiar with ranger rolling? It's a way of rolling clothing so that it takes up very little space and doesn't come unrolled.

    Here's the thing - you didn't use the cubes correctly. By shortcutting to use the already rolled clothes (and avoid the heat), you probably wasted space within the cubes and thereby eliminated the whole advantage of multiple cubes that allow easy removal from the suitcase. By not using multiple cubes, you lost the advantage of compressing each one.

      You just made me want to try it again. I kept the cubes so I'll try it. It does make sense. I was packing for 7 days in a carry on so maybe that was my problem too. Thank you for commenting Steve!

      LauriePOP you should be able to easily pack for the length of your trip (and longer) in a carry on. Next time, try rolling each garment smaller and lining them up neatly, use multiple cubes so they compress each other and consider putting your shoes/curling iron, chargers, etc in bags well. You'll be surprised how much you could fit in there 😉

    • @cindybare1
      @cindybare1 Před 6 lety +1

      Yes, I agree. More could have been put in the cubes and then you may have been able to add another cube in the suitcase instead of pilling the rest on top. It was so much higher with the rest of the clothes just thrown in there.

    Dear Laurie, may I give an advice? Stuff the cubes as much as you can. The whole purpose of packing cubes is compressing. That’s when it becomes a space saver. Not the way you’ve shown when it’s not even close to full. Maybe you can give it a try one day
