  • His sponsor walks out on Jack's show, when his sponsor's in town for contract renewal, so Jack's afraid to take him to a nightclub featuring a comic competitor. A puppet show seems a safe (and cheap) alternative, but filling in for the sore-throated puppeteer is golden throated Danny Thomas, whose charity and charm entrance the sponsor, but paralyze Jack.

    Jack Benny greatest of all time comedians. His guest and team can never be replaced. All comedians talk about today is politics. They are sickening. Jack was comedy at it's best. Johnny Carson is another favorite of mine.

    Danny Thomas, Jack Benny, and Bob Newhart are my all-time favorite comedians. It’s so difficult to find recordings of Danny Thomas’s nightclub routines, so the three appearances on Jack Benny’s programs are priceless. (On the “Danny Thomas Show” & the few “Make Room for Daddy” episodes available, only 6 of his classic nightclub routines are used/recycled because he was still an active entertainer up until the time of his death in 1991 or ‘92.). Thomas had a “style” of singing that I enjoy - pleasant sound and phrasing, with personalized arrangements. I was just in college when he died & would have loved to have experienced one of his full live nightclub shows. Thank you for posting this - I’ve read that Jack truly enjoyed Danny’s stories/song parodies, which is why he reciprocated by appearing in 3 episodes of Danny’s TV show.
    Although now (rightly) remembered for founding that wonderful St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, very few now recall what an overall entertainer & pioneering TV producer he was.
    I never thought these comedy legends would be forgotten, but most of my contemporaries & colleagues have no idea who Danny Thomas & Jack Benny were. If it wasn’t for “The Big Bang Theory” and the “Elf” movie, they wouldn’t even know who Bob Newhart is. Thankfully, at 93, he’s still alive and active. I am so grateful for CZcams postings of these GOAT performers.

    what a coincidence to come across this episode of The Jack Benny program that has Danny Thomas as a guest. just recently I saw a podcast with that loathsome bill maher who claimed that neither Jack Benny nor Danny Thomas were very funny. Now there is a true rube for you. After all these years people still find Mr. Benny & Mr. Thomas to be very funny and entertaining. bill maher will not be remembered as fondly or cherished as dearly as the great comedians of the golden age.

      I can't stand the sound of the Bill Maher, what a bunch of hot air--so he's ignorant AND has no taste?! Classless. I happen to adore Jack Benny, and if he can make me laugh all these years later, then yes he is funny!

      @Corno di Bassetto Jack was the "schlemeil", the butt of his own jokes. My favorite bit was in the Grocery Show shoe;
      Frank Nelson: "Go to the aisle between G and I".
      Jack Benny: "Well why didn't you just tell me to go to H?"
      Frank Nelson: "REMEMBER, YOU SAID IT, I DIDN'T!"

    I always get the biggest laugh at this episode when Jack Benny tells the $1000 at a restaurant joke and it flops and then Danny Thomas tells it. Two of the greatest comedy talents that ever lived in this same clip! And the backup with Mary Livingstone, Mr. Drysdale from the Beverly Hillbillies and the very elegant Doris Packer is perfect. This is real talent, not the crass crude drivel you see today.

    And, irony of ironies, this was during Jack's final season for American Tobacco [Lucky Strike]. Aftter 15 years on radio and television, they decided (in real life) not to exercise his option for another season. He found a new sponsor in Lever Brothers {Lux soap, Lux dishwashing liquid} for the fall of 1959. The character of "Mr. Lewis"- whoever Jack cast in his role- continued to appear from time to time.

    when i was a kid the local kc tv-market didn't show jack benny reruns. so i didn't have much of an opinion of him. when cable tv came along i discovered the "burns and allen show" and thought they were great. but still no jack benny. it wasn't until i saw the jack benny reruns on youtube that i finally had the chance to watch this wonderfully offbeat show.
    it was part sitcom, part variety show, his cast of regulars from rochester to mel blanc were fantastic and his guest stars, ranging from marilyn monroe, to isaac stern, to bogart, were just excellent. along with "the dick van dyke sjow" and "seinfeld" i now rank jack benny's show as one of the best half hour comedies ever. i haven't seen a bad episode yet and i've seen a lot of them.
