I so appreciate this information. As a former cardiac RN, I am fully convinced that conventional medicine has GOT to find its way in acknowledging complimentary therapies and alternative medicine and natural/holistic practices.

I'd love to know how many people actually follow preventive practices for health instead of going to a doctor after they've developed some health condition.
I believe most people get preventive advice after they acquire a health condition.
Then most MDs provide treatments based on their formal education, which they paid for handsomely.
And mostly all most doctors know from their education is pharmaceuticals or surgery.
I grew up before the internet was available to the general public.
Before the internet was available to the public, I became a software developer before attending a little college in the 1970s.
My father and grandfather became physicians before there were requirements for board certification. They became MDs in 1960 and the 1930s respectively.
They didn't know much about diet and exercise but they knew it mattered.
The drugs were minimal except for penicillin mainly.
They thought that it was the only true miracle drug of their time.
Even at that, they only gave penicillin when they saw need for it.
They had a lab in the back of their medical office that was used to detect whether a respiratory condition was due to allergy (eosinophils), strep, staph, or viral or bacterial pneumococcus based on a patient's sputum sample.
They put a slide on the roof each morning to collect pollen and checked the previous day's slide to see what was "in the air".
The vast majority of pollen was cedar (mountain juniper), mesquite, or ragweed when most patients experienced sinusitis, rhinitis, or URI.
It was a simpler time with no internet.
Most people knew little because info was available only in educational institutions with good libraries.
My father was a doctor at the time when corticosteroid drugs became available and was wary of them initially because they reduced inflammation.
Inflammation was a sign of illness and the reduction of inflammation through drugs seemed like covering over a condition without actually curing it.
Yet asthma and sinus corticosteroids were developed and became drugs we turn to.
They reduce suffering at least at the outset.
      This is what drugs do.
They reduce suffering until the body becomes accustomed to them.
Then people can't get off of them.
Smoking cigarettes and drinking alcohol are the same thing.
Yet marketing through advertising or word of mouth has led people to embrace them only to discover how they only cover over life circumstances.
Really, Ayurvedic science and Chinese Traditional Medicine are the original "food as medicine" remedies relative to our current knowledge.
Yoga and Qi Gung are the original movement remedies relative to our current knowledge.
Rarely are ailments investigated unless there's money to be made.
When there's money to be made, the rule is that you must synthesize a compound in the lab and perform studies on it to determining any side effects before it can be patented, labeled with warnings and sold.
And these are the things that doctors most often sell.
This is why I love Dr. Weil.
He looked at traditional and modern modalities and chose to embrace those instead of following the traditional physician path.
As he says, this simple 4-7-8 breathing method helps people.
The physiological sigh is another breath technique, based on study of what animals and humans do by nature.

I suffered from so much shortness of breath on and off over a year, and just found out about breathing in from the nose and slowly out the mouth, by looking it up on the computer. Now a few days later I’m still amazed how I can breath so much better, without feeling awful and needing to catch my breath. It’s really awesome.

THANK YOU! I am an exercise physiologist for a fire department and I teach them, on a basic level, torso breathing. When I start to talk about the breath I tend to loose half of the room. But more and more I see them figure it out, connect with their breath even if they were skeptical in the beginning something just clicks. This is when the mind and body connection can truly be made and then the possibilities are endless.. This is something that I am passionate about. I bring teach para-sympathetic/relaxation to those that are highly sympathetic. Breathwork will change the world.

@@PhoenixFireBreathwork Thank you for highlighting this comment I made 9 years ago!! I have come sooooo far. I went from people barely listening to me when I spoke about the benefits of breath to now. I am the director of a respiratory lab where the breath is the medium not only for assessment but also for healing and strengthening the mind and body. I am at the edge of medicine (always have been) working with Dr. at a functional medicine center. It is only the beginning and I have worked for over a decade to get here... I look forward to what the next decade brings.

Always amazes me that even though Pranayama is the actual original way of Yoga and has been around and worked(when do...at all) over 5 thousand years and still it is seen as too simple. That's the Ego saying that BTW. "It for was that easy I would have worked it our for myself" Well the you didnt 😂🙏♥

Breathing/breath-work will one day soon be a staple of western medicine. It has already been used in it's most basic form as one of the most effective tools known in cardio-pulmonary science. Looking forward to participating in this time.

If you take a yoga class, you do breathing exercises.
A lot of people take yoga classes, so a lot of people are doing breathing exercises without calling it that.
Even an aerobics class emphasizes breath.
Anyone swimming laps is doing breathing exercises.
Just may not be the exact one kind Dr Weil teaches.
I happen to do his 4-7-8 technique every day at work about a set an hour.
It's calming and helps my focus.
