    I am a dual citizen of Latvia and the US. Great place but too cold in the winter. Between Nov-April you don't want to be there. Little crime, very clean, very polite people and great and inexpensive public transportation. I think health and dental care are great and inexpensive. You only have to wait in line if you want the cheap subsidized government care. My cousin got a knee replacement for 110 euros and a friend got a hip replacement for 500 euros. They both waited two years.

    I think you either need to do more research, much more, to give an accurate impression of Latvia. Many of your comments are incorrect, although I couldn’t comment on the price of gym membership. There are many other ex soviet states where the cost of living is much less. Latvians speak Lithuanian? Perhaps some do but the language is Latvian with Russian also common as a first Language.
    Also watch your pronunciation. Jurmala is actually pronounced with Y not J

    • @andrewilkinson
      @andrewilkinson Před 4 lety +1

      EFBensonFan Your question is very difficult to answer. I could give my subjective response but that’s all it will be. If finance is a guiding motivation I would urge you to think very carefully, as the cost of living may seem low at the moment but I cannot see that being the case in the long term particularly as they now operate in a global economy.
      I would suggest you visit a short list and spend some in those countries, particularly engaging in the countries cultures. Personally I like the Baltic States, Poland, Hungary and Bulgaria. But I doubt I would retire to any of them without being absolutely sure in terms of culture and finances in particular.
      I do not think safety is an issue that is any different to any other European state, regardless about which kind of safety you are thinking of.

    I wonder how language could be a barrier in Latvia (unless you venture into very deep rural countryside). Most Latvians and Russians I know speak a strange mix of English, Latvian and Russian even between themselves. Although truth been told, I don't communicate with people older than 60.

    You were showing Russian Orthodox church but Latvians are mainly Lutherans and Catholics. Latvia got that big number of Russian speaking inhabitants because of occupation by the Soviet Union in 1940. Many pixabay pictures are not from Riga or Latvia at all. That was not ray bread either...he, he it`s dark brown and called black bread. Strange that you besides Riga mentioned a small town of Sabile, but there are more other old historical cities in Latvia that are more worth to be mentioned. There are also other factual mistakes like a number of population in Riga. It`s around 600000. There is one official state language in Latvia and it`s Latvian. Lithuanian is in Lithuania lol. Latvia is actually one of my favourite European destinations. Actually, health care in Riga isn`t that bad at all but many other smaller places have a shortage of professional staff. Nevertheless, I like your video idea. Yes, why not to retire in Latvia if you can.

    Since many years Latvians, by the thousands, have been leaving Latvia. Main reasons are: scarce jobs, terrible jobs, low pay and benefits. Many Latvians went to Britain for a better future, and some have taken on British citizenship so they wouldn't have to return to Latvia after Brexit.
    Only months ago doctors and other medically skilled professionals protested in front of government building in Riga to demand better wages and threatened to strike.
    Latvia also has a long (6 month) winter.
    What about politics? How is Latvia for the liberal minded?
    Latvians are known for nationalism and conservatism.
    About two years ago the Latvian Greens party was expelled from the European Greens association because the Latvian Greens had homophobic tendencies.
    Yes, for anyone who likes to live among right-wingers, nationalists, xenophobes, people with strong racist tendencies, and homophobes, then Latvia is a good place.
    BTW: My heritage is Latvian. I am a liberal and an atheist.
