Symphony X list, favorite to least favorite:
    The Divine Wings Of Tragedy
    The Odyssey
    V: The New Mythology Suite
    Iconoclast
    Twilight In Olympus
    Underworld
    Paradise Lost
    The Damnation Game
    Symphony X
Back in 89, I was a big Dream Theater fan, right from the beginning, and I still am. A few years later, because of Images And Words, there was a new golden age of progressive rock and Metal. I discovered Shadow Gallery, Pagans Mind, and Symphony X ( and quite a few other prog metal bands). These three bands I actually like better than Dream Theater. They're just about as good musically, and instrumentally as Dream Theater, but I think these three bands are better overall, because of their balance in instrumentation, singing and songwriting. Russell Allen to me, is the greatest metal singer out there.

Great great band. They took Yngwie's neo-classical style to amazing heights - and they've become progressively better with each album. I'm so envious of you guys living in NY/NJ and getting to see most of the great bands of the world. Love your concert anecdotes. I only saw them once, when they toured with Dream Theater in Europe about 15 years ago.

Hi Pete and Rich. Here is my rankings of Symphony X Albums. Top 5 favorite Band.
    1. The Odyssey (Title Track is one the best songs they have made IMO)
    2. Paradise Lost
    3. Iconoclast
    4. Divine Wings of Tragedy
    5. Underworld
    6. V The New Mythology Suite
    7. Twilight in Olympus
    8. The Damnation Game

Totally agree on Paradise Lost being number one. Incredible power and orchestrations. Two of their best ballads, a phenomenal ending, and incredible choruses everywhere. Not to mention every musician and Russell being at their best. The concept is great and the lyrics actually do a really good job.

Rich is a good addition! Stay safe, fellas. As for SX, I got into them thanks to a recommendation by my buddy's little cousin. It was shortly after The Divine Wings Of Tragedy was released and as a huge YJM fan, I was blown away. I absolutely love these guys but I'm one of the fans who enjoys the neoclassical years a bit better than the heavier prog-metal years. I miss the beauty in their music. Songs like The Accolade and The Edge Of Forever. I think as the years went by, their equipment and production got better, but the song writing started to go the other way.
    9. Symphony X (S/T debut) - Yeah, some good tunes but the singer was mediocre; solid start
    8. The Damnation Game - A very good beginning with Russ, but they'd do a lot better
    7. Iconoclast - 'Heavy for the sake of heavy'; starting to sound like a million other bands
    6. Neverworld - Slight step up from the previous; still just too much heaviness, not enough old SX style
    5. V - The New MS - Was never a HUGE fan like a lot of others are but it's still got some great tunes
    4. Paradise Lost - Opening pair are just legendary; the rest is good but starting to sound like other bands
    3. Twilight In Olympus - Never loved the closer but everything else is great!
    2. The Odyssey - The opener might be their best track; this album rips but Accolade II & tittle track are gorgeous
    1. The Divine WOT - Mothereffing flawless!

I think the first album is very underrated. Of course is not one of their best, but still a great album. In my opinion, A Lesson Before Dying is one of their 10 best songs. Premonition is a pretty good song, Romeo uses a very similar section of the verse from this song in the verse of The Odyssey - Champion of Ithaca. Absinthe and Rue, Masquerade, Rapture of Pain... a bunch of good songs in that album. I love the raw and dark sound from this album and hate the overproduced and compresed sound from last albums
    My top:
    1. V: The New Mythology Suite
    2. The Odyssey
    3. The Divine Wings of Tragedy
    4. Twilight in Olympus
    5. Paradise Lost
    6. Symphony X

    9. Underworld

I'm 2 years late, but here are my two cents anyway:
    9) Symphony X
    8) The Damnation Game
    7) Underworld
    6) Twilight in Olympus
    5) Iconoclast
    4) The Divine Wings Of Tragedy
    3) Paradise Lost
    2) The Odyssey
    1) V: The New Mythology Suite
As you might have guessed from this list, I prefer the prog to the riffage. I find their proggy 2000 albums to have more of an atmosphere than their most recent ones. They provoke a certain feeling that not many bands can. V will always be my #1. If I look at the albums as a whole, this is the most coherent one. I rank it above The Odyssey every time, because I find myself skipping the middle tracks of The Odyssey, while I don't skip any tracks of V. The Odyssey is their best song, but I'm ranking albums, not songs.

I'm pretty satisfied with this ranking. Iconoclast is my favorite, though. It's really hard to rank such a great catalogue, when this band apparently gets better and better with every new release. Paradise lost was the changing album for Symphony X because Michael Pinella stands quite back and leaves Romeo almost alone on the speakers for 2 many songs. On Odyssey there was the last time that guitar and keyboards share the balance just like Deep Purple in the 70's. Dream Theater on the other hand did the same thing for only 1-2 albums maybe.

I really have no clue how underworld is ranked so high. I LOVE the neoclassical stuff, and that record just lacks the classic symphony X feel. I mean the songs are okay, good heavy/prog metal. But it completely misses the beautiful neoclassical tunes that i love so much. My Favourite 3 are: V, Divine and Odessey. Just incredible albums.

I'm the opposite. I thought Paradise Lost was where they found that missing element to their sound. Their old stuff is good but it all sounds familiar. They sounded like so many other bands at the time. V was the first album I owned by them. I liked it when I first listened to it, but the more I spun it the more I got bored with it. Have to agree with you. The symphonic neoclassical element was a huge part of the band's appeal to me. With Paradise Lost and all that followed, they became much less of a prog- and much more of a thrash-metal band, like so many others.
There are thousands of bands that can play fast, loud and aggressive music, but the compositional beauty and true epic quality of the music on albums like that ones you mention is a much rarer good.

Just the opposite taste on Symphony X I guess:
    1) Twilight in Olympus
    2) The Divine Wings of Tragedy
    3) V : The New Mythology Suite
    4) The Damnation Game
    5) The Odyssey
    6) Paradise Lost
    7) Symphony X
    8) Iconoclast
    9) Underworld

Appreciate the video and the love for Symphony X on here -- mostly think you guys really overrated the latest Underworld album and underrated their earlier classics. The neoclassical style is what I've always loved about Symphony X rather than their heavy-handed style of recent years. Here's hoping they return back to this in the next release -- it's been too long. Fusing elements of Bach, Mozart and other classical composers with crunching metal is what drew me to the band in the first place.
My order, as a longtime fan:
    1. Twilight in Olympus (not the conventional choice, but it has some of my favorite songs on it)
    2. Divine Wings of Tragedy (probably their best masterpiece via fan consensus and has never been topped)
    3. V (Best concept album of all time)
    4. The Odyssey (Best epic track they ever did, best Allen vocals)
    5. Paradise Lost (Perfect balance between heavy and lighter songs, incredible story/adaptation)
    6. Iconoclast (Has When All Is Lost, my all-time favorite Symphony X song)
    7. The Damnation Game (Romeo coming into his own, the first Allen record)
    8. Underworld (Was disappointed with most of the entirety of this release, lyrically its their worst)
    9. Symphony X (Rod Tyler as a singer wasn't a terrific fit for the band, still a worthy first effort)

I started from V, so I'm not impartial here.
To me it's a great album.
    Also Divine Wings.
I would put these 2 together with Iconoclast as my favorites.
With The Odyssey right behind them.

I think "The Odyssey" is one of the greatest songs (metal epics) ever created. I just love Hades out of it! Apart from this, I generally tend to agree with your opinion, or with the commenter Mike Ryan (x2) below.

I remember buying “V” when it came out in 2000 and I couldn’t get into it. I felt it was too polished and too symphonic and the keyboards were too prominent. As a fan of old school power metal I felt let down. My favorite power metal band of all time is Crimson Glory as well as stuff like old Fates Warning And Helloween (everything they did up until the 00’s or so). I would consider revisiting Symphony X’s back catalogue though. The follow up to “V” looks interesting and has a cool cover so I would check that out also that first album might be more up my alley as a fan of Crimson Glory. It probably is more of a straightforward power metal album in that vein.

Start with Paradise Lost (then Iconoclast and Underworld). It fixes all the problems you mentioned with V. Much heavier and better songwriting. I had the same complaints with V as well.

For me DWoT through to Odyssey was prime era SX - possibly including Paradise Lost. Their albums after those were lacking something for me - they just got heavier and Russ got growlier, and their songs less interesting for me.
