Not to this degree in Japan. Because women CHOOSE to put that garbage on their face, whereas in Japan it is almost a REQUIREMENT to have it on, big difference. Despite Make-Up absolutely destroying your skin but, y'know.. most women are too stupid to know that.

@@benwalter4842 Speaking as a female who grew up in North America, I think it entirely depends on which people you're around, so the pressure doesn't exist as universally across the board as it does in a place like Japan. Having lived in several different cities now, I've never once felt social pressure to wear makeup, and the vast majority of my female friends almost never wear makeup either. Only for special occasions, but even then they still may not wear it. I know not everyone in North America has had my experience, but my point is, I definitely don't think it's as widespread and intense as it gets in Japan.

In Japan i would always wear make up, because they have great, cheap products there and if everybody looking so beautiful it makes me exited to also style myself more. I love that about Japan. @@Ooo.spiceyThere’s more to makeup than just foundation! And even then, there may be other “alternatives” like tinted sunscreens, tinted serums, and tinted moisturizers. Back in high school, I wasn’t very proficient in makeup and would just use my cerave tinted sunscreen to give my skin a more “even” look. Nowadays, I just use the L’Oreal Hyaluronic Tinted Serum, whereas my friend likes to use Fenty Beauty Tinted moisturizer. Regardless, you can still apply makeup without foundation, and if anything, a good skincare routine + sunscreen is most important for healthy skin.
You can always try other things like applying lip balms/lip tints to give your lips a pretty color (or I sometimes use Vaseline for rosy lip which is about $2 at target). Or maybe practice doing eyeliner (with a pencil eyeliner or gel eyeliner if you’re struggling!). You can always invest in an eyeshadow palette to make your eyes pop out more, or try on a pretty blush that matches you. A little goes a long way! And most days I don’t go out with makeup, as a good skincare routine has helped my skin a lot + a cute lip balm color :)

I personally don’t mind makeup at all, everybody should be free to do whatever they want with it.
It only becomes a problem when people start to feel like they’ve got no choice because society regards bare faced women as less valuable.
The same problems are the root of the problem of being forced to wear heels 24/7 for work as a woman or to constantly be bombarded with great tips on how to loose weight or how to dress cute.
I remember an article in Popteen, a Japanese youth magazine that is no longer printed (I think?) that focused on how some men ranked the girls’ outfits and they gave you tips on what to avoid so that your bf won’t be disapproving, another one was how the main models overcame hardship and it basically just talked about how they doubted themselves when their last relationship failed but now they are whole again because they have a new man. The dependency was palpable.
Throughout my whole time as a high school student in Japan I had the feeling that society was set to drill insecurities into your head as a woman.
It was really bizarre to me.
It’s a still very stiff and conservative mindset and quite frankly a misogynistic view on women that causes this to still exist.

One thing that I really don’t like about make up: it makes you conscious. You’re always trying to eat without smudging your lipstick, or cannot blow/rub your nose hard because you’re scared to ruin the foundation or constantly having to retouch it because it can melt under the hot temperature, etc. I do think make up is great, it evokes creativity and I can feel really pretty in it. But it’s such a hassle if you put it every day and makes your skin bad if you use it frequently. It’s so impractical.

some overseas women have no issues going without makeup because they have sharp noses, big eyes with long, fluttering lids (flattering facial features), long neck, etc... many asian women (eg. japanese etc) have small hooded eyelids/eyes, some dont have a high nose/bridge, long neck etc. I would say caucasian and indian, some middle-east women have flattering facial features to enable them to be confident without makeup and it's not in their cultural norm as well, also, some places / countries may be poor and so they place more importance on necessities like food etc.

The underlying problem is that the world values women more if they are beautiful, and it tells women over and over that their value lies in their appearance. Women are expected to be hot, pretty, fuckable, the beauty myth is still very strong. It's not just Japan, and it's not just about makeup. It's more about this concept that the best a woman can be is to be physically attractive (for hetero men), and this pressure is now so internalized and constant that it's impossible for many women to even truly recognize it as aproblem, it's just a part of our lives.

I mean, when people value appearance much more than what’s genuine, this bounds to happen.
Let’s be real, appearance does matter, but so is honesty. It becomes a problem when one is valued much more than the other. Sweeping problems under the rug and ignoring it, is only hiding away from the problem, never has made it disappear.
When you create a society that views 他人 = 迷惑, you’ll get a cold and uncaring world, just like what happened to you and your grandma at that train station. I lived in Japan for 5 years, and I started feeling social pressure of not wearing makeup when I was 18. During my years in Tokyo, I was very insecure about my すっぴん(natural face) and started to feel very low self-esteem. This kind of feeling had haunted me for years. Even at the beginning years when I moved to Singapore, I wore makeup every day. Now I am living in Brazil, and I have started to feel confident about my natural look again and am more focused on my physical and mental health, which helps me rebuild my self-esteem. I would say it is very interesting that you can tell in East Asia, that our societies have more social norms that have put pressure on women, which is unfortunate. So the best thing is, reserve makeup only for occasions or big events. That way you will get used to your natural self and be at ease with it.

Sadly we were raised like this almost all over the world and the pressure remains. It is so deeply engrained that it's hard to unlearn with a few compliments or reassurance that we are "naturally pretty". People think women only wear makeup if they are called ugly but sometimes compliments on looks can also backfire, like wanting to be pretty all the time to get more and more compliments. This happened to me when people told me I'm pretty (after I wore more makeup) now I wanna wear it all the time to "keep the image" and people often told me I look sick or tired when I 'coincidentally' wasn't wearing makeup so now I never wanna look "sick" again. I know it's wrong to be so obsessed with beauty but it's the way society has conditioned me and many other women. As an artist I love makeup in a creative way too and I have fun with it and I used to think I do it for me but sadly there's also a pressure attached to it.

I’m an Asian woman living in America and I wear makeup pretty much every time I leave the house, maybe not to move my car in the morning or to the grocery on the corner of my house but farther away grocery stores or shopping with friends yes I’ll put on a little. My (customer facing) job I usually put full makeup too. I constantly struggle about whether this is an insecurity problem and if I should try to face it but idk, day to day I feel fine about it and am more comfortable when I’m better looking. Like other commenters have mentioned, beauty is power (in most societies) I have more confidence to stand my ground and be assertive when I look good. Unfortunately after centuries of this exact issue, it’s affected breeding and a lot of women just aren’t blessed with “natural beauty” and that’s OK. does it mean they should be forced to accept it and accept having slightly less power in their lives/careers? I don’t think so. Which is why I find the Russian girls opinion so disagreeable

I googled these singers - they all wear natural style of makeup. Men can’t tell.

Some of us don't have the privilege of natural beauty like others. I'm one that can't be seen/won't let others see me without makeup. I absolutely hate it and wish all the time I had more distinguished facial features and beautiful enough to go without. Even just going to the gas station and even sometimes the mailbox becomes a production to some degree in case I run into someone. People would be in shock if they saw me without makeup and not in a good way. I am decent looking with it but fugly without it I'm not kidding.

I hope I don’t sound creepy but you look gorgeous in the picture and I think you would look beautiful without make up too.

There's a downside to natural beauty that my teenage neighbor had---never being left alone. She was routinely hit on by guys for years and years and had to get good at polite rejection. Her life did not turn out the way she expected either, which I won't detail out of respect for her privacy. There's also the issue of really good looks that last maybe 15-18 years and begin to fade as we age.

Its ok not being beautiful. Its ok to be normal or even ugly. Diversity is what make us strong.

Unfortunately make up can’t save my face but luckily that’s why I don’t feel the pressure to wear it

It's sad that women feel the pressure to wear makeup and are uncomfortable with showing their bare faces even to their partners, but it's also sad some women feel the need to talk about us women who genuinely enjoy wearing makeup in a condescending manner, as if we're "cheating", are not confident enough, or attach whatever negative feature or behavior to us. I wear makeup because I like feeling good when I look in the mirror and makeup makes my face reflect how I feel on the inside. I love beauty and very much enjoy having the ability to accentuate my best features and will never stop doing so, just like how I like to wear nice clothes and take care of my hair, for example. I wear makeup to present myself to the world the same way I see myself, but also just to please myself visually. I know this because on some days when I just stay at home alone, I might wear makeup just to cheer myself up.

I love makeup, for me it's an expression of individuality. However, when I was younger, I did feel pressure to wear some, and it became my "armor" according to my step mother, and it was. I stopped wearing it for a few years, and it was so freeing to be able to feel like I can just go to the store bare faced and that there's nothing wrong with me. When I got back into makeup, it reignited my love for it in a creative sense, but I'd never want to feel like I need it again, and I don't wear it every day.

I didn't learn to apply makeup, I was 23 when i bought my first foundation. I have very strict Mexican parents, and mom would tell me I was beautiful without it.

I am happy to wear chapstick, mascara, eyeliner and that’s it! Yes, at 41! I wore more when younger but I am wearing less because I feel it is more mature to be natural or better worded, authentic! I feel that men know how you really look! I wear lipstick and light foundation for important dinners, as it’s often evening and you should look more formal. But I think many many women look younger with less makeup and less materialistic as well. I offcourse do my hair always and dress nicely, it’s just makeup can look to fake. But I also think cosmetic surgery is also too prevalent in the west too! 😊

That's just the consequence of the influencer era. Teenage girls and young women see all these flawless, poreless women with perfect lives on social media and develop low self esteem.

The real problem lies in how society pushes women to wear make up, social media just intensifies it

NGL, when I was in Japan last month, I think I saw very identical women maybe 50% of the time. So many Asians try to look exactly like each other that... there's nothing actually special about them. Respect for the handful of women that don't wear makeup or wear very little of it. They actually didn't look like some superficial person. Hell, respect for the women wearing a lot of makeup that didn't look like half of the population out there.
