Carlos Riesco (1925-2007) was a Chilean Composer. He studied composition at the University of Chile with the teacher Pedro Humberto Allende. He then continued his training in the United States, where he trained with David Diamond in composition; Rafael Da Silva on piano and Philip James on instrumentation and composition. He then he participated in the Tanglewood Composition Seminars, taught by Aaron Copland and Olivier Messiaen, respectively.
His first works belong to his university stage: "Cuatro Poemas de Amor", on texts by Pablo Neruda, as well as several short pieces for piano, a suite for string orchestra and the "Semblanzas Chilenas" for piano.
In 1951 he moved to Mexico City, where he studied with the composer Rodolfo Halffter and between 1952 and 1955 he studied in Paris, France, with Nadia Boulanger.
He worked at the Instituto de Investigaciones Folklóricas of the University of Chile, to later develop musical studies in the United States. He was linked to the activities of the International Society of Contemporary Music.
In 1954, the Ballet de France, directed by Janine Charrat, commissioned him to compose a ballet for this group.
