Want to hide your ugly vertical blinds in your small apartment? Here's a how-to guide for a DIY window valence or cornice to hide them. In this episode, you'll see what trick I used to put up curtains using the existing vertical blind hardware. (affiliate links unless stated otherwise!)

You'll also see the design I came up with to make an upholstered cornice (also sometimes called a valance) that is a simple and inexpensive way to dress up the top of the window and hide the existing plastic cornice that's not so pretty. Saying goodbye to those vertical blinds felt so good and my curtains and DIY upholstered cornice/valance completely changed the look of the window, adding that much-needed touch of style and architectural detail to my apartment. Plus, it's an easy way to decorate in a small apartment on a budget! - Jak na to + styl

THERE IT IS! All the info I needed to do this to my rental as well...which has scads of blinds. Youre a life saver! Clean, quick, clear instructions....SOOOO HELPFUL!!! THANKS!!
This is a great idea for renters. I'm in a rented apartment & so I can only make holes into the walls in certain areas such as hanging a picture or a mirror. My landlord would be furious if I drilled holes around the windows lol. Thank you for sharing this
I love the tip about the curtains. I have those same blinds and have been trying to figure out a way to hang curtains. Thank You :)
This is so creative and easy! There's no one else like you on youtube :D. Can't wait to see how your new apartment comes together.
Thank you for this video idea. I too have the same vertical blinds and wanted to put a decorative curtain in it instead. I was going to put a curtain rod just under the valence, but using the clips to hold up the curtain is a fantastic idea. Worse comes to worse, I will put the blinds in my closet like you did and put the rod under the valence. Thanks so much for the idea.
Love your ideas and creativity. We live in very sunny all yr long South Florida. Most of our friends that had taken their ceiling fans down, changed out vertical blinds for curtains, or plantation shutters, are now realizing that there is good reason verticals stay around. Same with ceiling fans if you want a cool interior without a $600.00 a month electric bill. Thankfully we kept our verticals and ceiling fans because I hate wasting money. But many of our friends have reinstalled their fans, and some went back to verticals. Nothing controls light like a vertical, even though curtains are soft and ad beauty.
Exactly; our vacation rentals are in super sunny Phoenix. Why do people assume vertical blinds are "ugly"? They come in many sculpted colors, shapes and even fabric. Top it with a matching cornice or valance and it looks fine and modern (some S-curved ones that are colored or fabric-covered even resemble drapes when hung). For warm and sunny climates curtains aren't always best, especially when you want to filter the amount of light you let in yet still keep privacy.
So great!!! I absolutely love your design sense and greatly appreciate your excellent tutorials!!!
She needs a show on DIY OR HGTV

Awesome idea! I have a closet with those bi fold doors. I hate bi fold doors. I recently took them off and hung curtains. Your cardboard valence is exactly what I was looking for. That extra umph. Thanks!
The intro music is lit!
Hi Isabelle I been looking for tension rods for a 4 feet wide window is there a few stores you can suggest?
Your are very creative ,i like ur videos.
I am going to replace my vertical blinds with your idea bua i couldn’t use the tension rode😣 ,how to solve that problem?
Your a genius!!!
Great job☆☆☆☆☆
That looks really good i like it. I have a question. Where i can find the pins that u used to hold the curtain?
I would also like to do the same but the cornice that is installed at my apartment is very close to the wall. Is there a way I could still make a cornice to hide the ugly cornice currently installed? Thanks.
This is genius!
thanks good idea
Love following you! 😘 Seems so easy to you, but hard for me! 🥴 👍
Toda vez que eu vejo as cortinas de casa eu penso em fazer algo assim, que cubra o topo e deixe estiloso. It's a very cool solution.
Nice
WOW !!!!
U are so awesome!
RE: hanging the cornice. Since these are so lightweight, rather than the brackets-and-3M strips idea (which is brilliant), couldn't I drill a hole in the furring strip and place a long nail or screw in the wall (let it extend out about and inch or so) and insert it into the drilled hole in the furring strip? Not sure if it would reduce the integrity of the furring strip, but seems an easy solution and makes for one less thing to buy (hanging brackets). Love your ideas...I'm about to begin making the cornices and plan on tackling the lighted wall frames next. Thanks for the inspiration!
Can you send me a link of what I need please thanks 😊
I want to change the fabric my curtain box has. I can't seem to find a video that will show how to change it :(
How u can do all.... Amazing
i like that
i cant thank you enguth!!!
Any tips for those extra long sliding doors that apartments have? I've tried different things, but I am stumpped. Thanks!
You can make a longer valance or cornice.
How tough parachage mam
Thank you thank you thank you. Love it :)
Love your accent...and the Cornice too.
Ive been waiting to see how you did this, I too have vertical blinds on the patio door in my apartment living room. I was wondering though, did you have to use "pinch pleat" curtains to use the hooks or did you use regular curtains?
They are regular curtains (I got them at Walmart), no pinch pleats. Thanks for watching!
Thanks for making such great videos, cant wait to see the rest of your apartment design!
I have a very small reception room can you help me with anything. I from India and really love you
Curious to see what I did about those vertical blinds in my LA apartment? Here's how I said goodbye vertical blinds and hello curtains and window cornice!

Isabelle,
How do you make changes to a rental apartment?
Does one need to get permission from the apartments?
His Valor We lived in apartment and made changes. No need to ask for permission. As long as you save the old things. When you leave put everything back as it was when you leave.
Check with your apartment manager for what you can and can't do with the apartment, but as long as what you put up is temporary and can be taken down like temporary wall paper, there shouldn't be a problem. My girlfriend hated a door in one of our apartments and got permission to put in an accordion door and the apartment complex stored the original door. My friend paid for the door and left it for the next person.
EngineerYourSpace. Small bathroom color
When is the next video?!
Our vacation rentals are in super sunny Phoenix. Why do people assume vertical blinds are "ugly"? They come in many sculpted colors, shapes and even fabric. Our vacation rental guests don't want to choose from glaring sun and heat with no privacy to blackout during the day and unable to see anything outside.
Interesting, but those ready made curtains would look considerably better (day or night) if a heavy curtain lining was added. The beautiful thing about curtains and other window treatments is you can take them with you and modify them for new housing.
want detail nice
But what did you do about the popcorn ceiling? LOL
Love this...so creative! Please post more. I love your channel:)
What are the dimensions of your curtains?? I have a window that exact size but don't have measuring tape
Buy a measuring tape. Can get them literally everywhere for $1-5 and is a must have for the home.
SWLinPHX this was 6 years ago. I now own a measuring tape. Thank you
@@efroggys LOL, good to know. It's a household item like scissors and tape.
Like your channel!
Better if there is more action and make the explanation short and sweet!
New video, please!
Just watched 2 of your videos on your channel and all I can say is: you are awesomely creative.
Please don't mind my asking this one question though: do you have people helping you with all the construction or do you ACTUALLY/REALLY do it all by yourself?
You know what would be an epic video… how to transform an ugly window into a CZcams studio.
Nice job! If it were I, and it is not, I don't really like the burlap over the cornice. I know that it contrasts, but I think a raw silk or something with a little bit of shimmer would go better with the drapery. A shiny painted grasscloth on the vertical would have been nice too. And if you make the cornice a little more narrow, even by 2 inches, the window looks more narrow. Bottom line, is that the windows look a lot better than those blinds! Thanks! (NOTE: you can get old dresses and even pants at thrift shops for less than a dollar, you don't need much fabric for this)
I like the Cornice, but the curtins are too short and too thin. They'll still be capable of looking in while you're in your summer pajamas, or just out of the bath.
🙋hi
I m a big fan or your vedios.. but I felt in this one you could have achieved a better llok by keeping the curtain length longer
I hate verticals and horizontal blinds.. They are soooo hard to clean, and they break, fall off constantly, get stuck, clack when the wind blows, etc, etc. Best to just have curtains you can actually wash and change the color when you want.
We're supposed to clean them?
I love your videos but I think live very fast must play often for understand the steps.
Looked all over. Can’t find the resource guide on your site. A link in the video would be less frustrating. Thanks. Hard to like, although I like your videos.
I preferred the window blinds before
now its more ugly
That cornice should be white your in LA not the deep country.
