- In his video, I take a look at the iconic Opinel No.08 folding knife. I compare it to my current pocket knife and look at UK knife law.

Great review, thanks. I've had a no 8 for decades - superb value and design
thanks!
Great description and great knife. Looking forward to seeing it come out of your pack👍👍
Defo Grays!
I carry around an OPINEL n6. The smallest OPINEL with the locking mechanism. It is the best size one can carry legally in their pockets and it does a perfect job. Here, in Greece, laws are strict too.
Thanks for watching.
At the moment I'm carrying a Cold Steel Kudu (and a Vic Handyman). It's about the cheapest knife I've been able to find.
Great video mate. Thanks for the shout out much appreciated sam
A pleasure mate.
The difference between subjects and citizens. Love these videos.
It’s a brilliant knife and fantastic for food prep 👍🏼
Thanks Dean. I look forward to trying it out.
I own, carve with, and collect Opinel knives since 1980 The Carbon steel blades cannot be beat. As an American colonial boy, I believe Knife Laws are even more ridiculous than Gun Laws.
They don't keep criminals from using them for harmful purposes. And only restrict law abiding non-criminals from using them as tools, for sport, and for self-defense. When I was in the Boy Scouts, I always carried a pocket knife, a sheathed hunting knife, and a hand axe on camping trips in the forest. I also had an USGI surplus entrenching tool, canteen, and mess kit.
I've got that knife too. It's a lovely knife to use and very easy to sharpen with a cheap bit of sandpaper. Makes for a great little carving knife. Only thing to be wary of is that the wooden handle can sometimes swell up due to the changeable weather conditions. This makes the blade a little harder to fold out. A simple solution to this issue is to tap the butt of the handle onto a hard surface to release the blade and give you a bit more surface area of the blade to pull out. Enjoy 👍
Thanks matey and for the tips.
:-) * Thanks for the tip
The locking collar can be removed fairly easily. I believe it would then be legal to carry anytime
Nice unboxing mate! Great knives, I have the number 6 in my pocket every day, handy at work and if needed out walking, it’s like my keys phone and wallet, always there 😂
I do have the 8 and 9 too! Can’t fault them. You’ll love it!
Have a great weekend buddy
Ash 👍🏼
Cheers Ash. Def feel inspired to look at other Opinels now.
Great video.
I've just bought the slightly smaller no.6. I chose it because it's bigger than my blade on my multi tool but more compact then my Mora basic knife.
It's great for food prep and simple jobs round camp.
And I can keep it in the top pocket of my rucksack.
Looking forward to using it.
Many thanks for watching.
I tend to carry my Opinel in my pocket, rather than buried in my rucksack, so I've removed the locking collar, and use a No 7, which has a blade length of just under 3 inches. They sure are great knives.
Thanks for watching.
I carry a Sak compact everywhere, I’ve got a no8 in the kitchen that’s perfect for food prep great slicer and easy to keep razor sharp.
Good to hear lots of good reports about the No.8. Thanks for watching Tomas.
What a really lovely gift * I am very much like yourself when it comes to knifes. I have a basic knife that comes in a set with the Baco Laplander saw ( 4" fixed blade) & like you say , if it is buried deep with-in your rucksack with all your outdoor equipment I don't see this being a problem. I have the Huntsman Victorinox (SAK) & it is brilliant* ( only I didn't want to muck it up with food prep) , so bought an Opiniel No 7 in a nice brunt orange colour. It is a wee bit small & now I really like the look of yours (being bigger & with a lovely sheath) Sending much well wishes * :-) Thanks as always for sharing
Hi Nseight. Hope you're well. I have the Bacho Laplander saw too. Thanks for the watch as always. Ben :-)
Two great knives,. Hardy
Might get a third....👍
Looks like a quality knife has pretty much everything you need
I tried it out tonight on some mango. Worked a treat! Thanks for watching. 👍
I took the locking mechanism off mine and filed the tip to 3" . Had mine for ages ,it does stiffen up over time which I prefer as it's now non locking ,use mine for food prep and sometimes I've used it to strike my ferro rod, works great on both ,just came across your channel so new sub .God bless you and your family..Lee
Good ideas there Lee and many thanks for subbing. Welcome to the channel!
Nice to see a video where the information regarding U K laws is accurate. I've seen a few where people clearly don't know what they're talking about and are giving inaccurate info.
Thanks Andy. ATB - Ben
I need to carry one when doing my job as believe it or not a care worker but apparently that 's not a reasonable excuse so I just have to chance it. Being light weight, super sharp and locking it is a lovely knife.
It's a great knife. I'm just careful about when and where I take it.
Nice video, thanks for sharing . atb
No problem WhiteTongue. ATB - ben
I've had an Opinel 10 for 30 years the blade is probably half the depth of your 8 from sharpening but it's still going strong. Look after it and it'll last a lifetime....well almost :)
That's good going!
Bought my wife a No. 8. I EDC a No. 10. Use it for food related purposes!!! My other EDC is a Leatherman SURGE!!! Wish I had a sheath for the No. 10!!!
The Opinel #5 is under 3" and doesn't have the virobloc locking mechanism. The #6 is still under 7" but DOES have the virobloc locking mechanism. Of course you CAN easily remove it and use it without that. The blade will NOT be restrained and will only be safe for slicing cuts, stabbing cuts run the risk of closing the knife and nearly slicing your index finger.
Nice Knife the No8, I have a couple, one for general camping use and another in my shooting kit, every fisherman and hunter I know uses them, usually a 7 or an 8, the 7 has the locking ring and the blade is 1/4 inch over the legal length, while the locking rings can be removed it still doesn't make them legal. I think the 5 is legal and comes without the locking ring. I tend to carry my 8 for wild camping and general adventuring in the outdoors, and a 20 year old Leatherman Wave :), Only yesterday I was hacking away at some weeds outside my house with my Opinel 12, a great knife for "Bigger Jobs" ;)
I might end up with more Opinels, You're inspiring me Snork!
@@benhikescamps I generally prefer the stainless ones, they don't stain or rust, well mine haven't :)
:-) Great info Snorkherder * Thanks for sharing
@@nseight Just my opinion, Thanks :)
прекрасный нож, любимый
I'd be interested in a review of how you found using it particularly comparing to the functions of your Swiss Army Knife. Also how much does it weigh? I've a leatherman which is fantastic but a bit too heavy for me to take on treks so I usually leave it for the car camping trips!
I might well do that Paul! Not sure on weight just yet.
I've got a couple of opinel knives they are decent, I'm the same I take my Swiss army knife on all my camps , ATB 👍
Can't beat the Swissie eh Gaz?
Nice little knife, as an edged tool/weapon enthusiasts, and someone who owns an opinel no.9(as well as a multitude of fixed blades and folders) I can say they are a good knife... However, the blade is thin, I've known them to break at the tip, and they 'roll' pretty easily. I wouldn't use mine for much more than food prep, and using the sharp 90 degree spine edge for ferro rod scraping. Due to the blade thickness and the grind type, I wouldn't recommend for much else... Still, nice knife that I would recommend to those wanting a cost effective, easily packable camp knife. Atb James
Thanks for the watch and heads up James.
@@benhikescamps dude, I only mention my opinion as a cautionary tale, I don't want you slicing yourself open. I found for carving/whittling/other wood related uses, an opinel, due to the thin blade, can be difficult to control fully, my recommendation for these activities is to buy a whittling set, or a thicker 'Scandinavian grind' fixed blade such as a Mora or similar. Being safe in the woods, especially when isolated, has to be paramount. Atb James
@@BadHairAdventures Thanks for sharing * Great advise & recommendations :-)
Great knives , never seen a copper in the woods 😁🏕👍
Thanks 👍
The N°9 fits the sheath perfectly. The N°8 fits but is too small.
Cracking video Ben its a great knife for small tasks around the camp atvb Jimmy 😎😎
Thanks Jimmy. ATB
Good knife. I have one
Thanks. I agree.
In my opinion the Opinel 6 is a better choice for in the pocket and above all it's legal
Thanks for that info.
Love my no.6 however as a locking knife technically it is not legal to carry in the uk.
I use this knife to prep food and as my steak knife
Ita useful for that. Thanks for watching.
Two are better than one. Each do different jobs.
Thanks for The info. Don't cut yourself 😜
Opinel is 130 years old this year
when im out and about all i carry is swiss army soldier which has a bit more beefer blade than a normal swiss army
Might check that out.
Opinel does have other options that do not lock.
Thanks for letting me know. Good knives.
@@benhikescamps You're very welcome.
Meanwhile in America we walk around with uzi’s and AR-15s 🤣🤣
Well....🙄
AR-s maybe, but Uzis jam too much!!!
Which is why you have more hate filled racist and bigoted insane people causing more mass shootings than anywhere on the planet. On top of it all you have some of the worst social programs in the developed nations. Essentially those fake Christians Evangelicals you have so many of could care less what happens to you the minute you are born. The only thing I see in the USA is unbridled greed and the stupid people that allow it to happen. Truly the USA isn’t a great country rather it’s a relatively poor one. Only China and Russia are worse. Only because they don’t allow for differing opinions on how things should be and because they are a police state. Something that if the Christian nationals ever get control will be far worse in the USA. Never vote Republican.
Semi auto unless you have the papers and an expensive one under the machine gun registry. Illegal, anything goes. Meanwhile, what actually tends to get used for hunting is a Remington 870 or Mossberg 500 pump shotgun. Something that is actually affordable to shoot is a Ruger 10/22.
Not Uzi's
In California USA the legal blade size is 2” go figure.
Wow.
If you ever get arrested for carrying a knife and took to court even though you have a good reason, demand a crown court trial at the Magestraits court you have a better chance of convincing a Jury than a Magestrait.
Thanks Steve.
But you do understand that if your guilt of the crime (carrying the prohibited knife) and you requeste crown court that would be your biggest mistake you can make. Now your liable for all the court fees and could possibly get a more serious prostitution
They do a non locking No5 which is legal to carry anywhere.
So where would u stand carrying a Stanley blade
@Nathan as explained in the video, you'd need to show reasonable excuse for having it on you such as your occupation at the time it was found, such as gangster, hardman or carpet fitter.
It's all about having good reason really.
You can remove the ring...than it is legal !😉👍
It's the cutting edge not overall blade length.
Thanks.
Nice review but the music was to loud.
Thanks for watching.
3:00 “ I think it’s meant to be designed to be multifunctional“ 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 it’s a knife my friend it’s as multifunctional as a knife comes
True that.
Opinels are real nice, I got a no. 9 in carbon steel. Usually prefer a smaller fixed blade knife for the outdoors stuff tho, something like a Helle, Brusletto or Mora. Over here we don't even have a legal limit, but generally the population is very much into the outdoor lifestyle so if you are a regular guy with good intentions you are within the law. Going to the pup on the other hand every knife, screwdriver or flamethrower is a bad idea to bring... Youth gangs in the capital is one of the problems here, bringing kichen knives and axes to rob other kids... If police catch them they are minors so they basically just drive them back home. Crazy what the world has come to.
They feel so well made. Are you in Norway?
@@benhikescamps I am!
I can tell the criminal element religiously follow all of these strict knife laws.
😂
Good thing I don't live there. Nothing illegal were I live and I can wear a handgun out in the open and carry a rifle too
Out of interest, why do you feel you need to carry a handgun out in the open? Genuine question. It’s another world for us.
@@benhikescamps I don't but I can.
Fixed blade and locking knives of any discription are illegal in UK, even folding knives with a blade more than 3ins.
Yes.
Thanks for watching.
No they're not stop spreading misinformation.
@@Chris66able They are not illegal IF YOU HAVE LEGITIMATE REASON, but they are not legal as an everyday carry, when i go fishing i take a large fixed blade knife for bait prep and to dress the catch for the table. perfectly legal.
The UK has very stupid knife laws...
It's sad. Opinels are pretty cool, but because of the insane politicians in the UK you're deprived of the freedom to carry them.
You can buy a 7 and pop the lock off, I suppose, but you shouldn't have to.
We know that crimes are committed with kitchen knives, not traditional French pocket knives, but of course the politicians have to look like they're doing something.
Lol the police can just come up and search you? Do you live in 1930s Germany?
No, I live in the UK. Where do you live?
