  • Hey peeps! Here's a little thrown together review of the Opinel #6 Inox with Walnut handle. One of the few knives I would describe as a practically perfect EDC knife for the lay person.
    What's not to love? It's lightweight, cheap, perfect size, easy to use, low maintenance and takes a wicked sharp edge.
    It ticks basically every box! And for the cost I would challenge you to find a better value knife.
    For those who already own Opinels I have no doubt this isn't news to you... But for those on the fence about buying one, go for it! You won't regret it.
    Thanks for watching!

    Back the classics is an intelligent choice ever.
    Some products are classics. To be a classic we need an inexpensive, well done, nice design and a brand who gives you a guarantee.

    Just subscribed, great video and great lanyard. I’m really thinking about getting the number 6 size. I’ve had the number 8 in the past and found it very annoying in the pocket. Good luck growing your channel man. You got this!

    I have run the full gambit of EDC knives...from Opinel to Swiss Army to Southern Grind to Cris Reeve and many in between. After much soul searching I now carry Ohta friction folders and Opinel knives. If I need something more I carry a small, non-folder like an Izula. Most everything else is for silly and just for show (cough cough my Grimsmo Norseman) :)

    The Opinels do neck carry well. My No.12 is in a neck carry sheath. You know it’s there but it’s not uncomfortable.
    Thanks for the idea with the Autosol, I never thought of that.

    The Walnut is the nicest handle Opinel makes imo - still inexpensive, very lightweight and tough, looks stunning, and doesn't swell as much as the standard beech when wet. I use the #6 Walnut as my hiking/backpacking carry because it's so light (at 28g) and the blade is just about big enough (7.4cm) to cope with most tasks. The Inox makes sense in damp environments and for food prep too. #8 Walnut is a handsome beast - wish they also did my favourite #9 in walnut...

    Great edc review of the number #6, i'm about to get the same one as it seems to be the perfect size and super handy. I've seen a review by a cook who use it as one of his main knife for precise tasks like cutting garlic etc. at work. There are also people who slowly boil them in oil (30min max with gentle fire) to get the blade out quicker Cheers!

    I'm looking to get my first Opinel and would like some advice from someone with first hand experience; I am 183 (6ft) cm and about 68 kilos (150lb) with men's medium sized hands. I know the No 8 is the standard, but I'm looking at a 6 or 7 to carry every day, most likely in the pocket.
    Which do you think would be a better fit?

      just measure the width of your palm with your hand, my palm is 3.5" so the 3.63" handle #6 fits like a glove (you can check by looking at Opinel size chart for handle length), though my #8 ain't feeling out of place either

  • @davids9549
    @davids9549 Před 3 lety +1

    Removing the locking ring from your #7 will not make it UK-legal because its blade easily exceeds 3 inches.
    In point of fact, if you measure the cutting edge of a #6 by 'rolling' the blade it comes out at just a whisker over 3 inches, but you'd have to be unlucky to be pulled up on that, I reckon.

  • @deanwaller8283

      You can take the ring lock off with some pliers and keep it in a different pocket.

    Liking your vids... but this knife, aghhh I don’t get it. Opinel just do nothing for me, don’t like the handle, don’t like the blade shape, think the whole thing is just unpleasant. Nice video all the same 👍🏻

    • @toolstimetravel4948
      @toolstimetravel4948  Před 3 lety +3

      You're right! by todays measures it's a very antiquated design, but I think there is a certain timelessness about them as wood and steel suits any era in history.
      I also feel there is a simple elegance to the two handed manipulation, and non-locking nature of it... these knives weren't designed to be tactical folders, just svelte cutting tools for the common man.
      Thanks for watching!

    • @johnpemberton655

      Tools, Time & Travel totally agree there is always gonna be a place for opinel, they have there own look and totally unlike anything else. I agree with the ‘romance’ to a two handed opening, it’s a very systematic thing, I’m opening my knife, I’m going to cut something, then close it and put it back in the pocket. Once again, great vids 👍🏻

      Luckily we have a million knives to pick from. I love the opinel because they are very light (allow me to carry other things too without feeling burdened), and the best slicers. Also available in carbon which is easy to sharpen, and gets sharp. Did I mention sharp?
