A witness in the impeachment trial of President Joseph Estrada testified on Thursday that a presidential aide ordered her to start two shell companies that prosecutors say Estrada used to hide bribe money.
Estrada has remained defiant, calling the charges politically motivated.
President Estrada is continuing his effort to firm up support among the poorer people of the Philippines.
He handed out awards to workers on Thursday in what has become a weekly ritual.
The president has been charged with four impeachable offenses stemming from profits skimmed from an illegal gambling scheme and tobacco taxes.
Estrada, or Erap as he is popularly known, has said he will not step down, but will be acquitted in the impeachment trial.
The opposition has called for him to resign to ease the country's economic slide.
Estrada's popularity has remained strong during the impeachment according to various surveys.
Estrada did make it clear that he thinks the controversy is hurting the nation.

"I believe that after all of this the truth will prevail. Now I am calling on all of the people who are causing trouble to focus on things that can help our country. We should listen to the voice of all of our people, not just a rich few in Makati."

On Thursday a witness in the impeachment trial, attorney Jazmin Banal, said Edward Serapio told her to sign documents founding the companies and then turn them over to an unknown owner.
In addition to being a presidential aide, Serapio is a senior partner in the law firm where Banal works.
Prosecutors said further testimony will trace an intricate paper trail to prove Estrada used the companies as a base to invest bribes from illegal gambling lords.
While Banal was being questioned a conflict appeared between pro and anti-Estrada senators.
Senator Miriam Santiago, who supports Estrada tried to cast a bad light on the witness for a job change she made to a lower-paying position.
But Senator Raul Roco appeared to be taking aim at Santiago during his questioning, indicating that Banal made the change for idealistic reasons.
Senator Santiago ordered three members of the audience thrown out after she claimed they were making "provocative gestures" at her.

The incident underlines the high political value placed on the nationally televised trial.
Also on the stand on Thursday and Friday was Emily Padua, an lawyer with Pagcor the official government agency overseeing legal gambling.
Prosecutors asked her to corroborate the testimony of chief Estrada accuser, Governor Luis Singson, who connected Estrada to profits from illegal gambling.
While Padua was on the stand, another senator discovered a camera microphone pointed toward the senators' seats despite rules allowing only a central microphone.
Senators said the device may have recorded their private conversations.
The trial will recess over the weekend and reconvene on Monday.

She even said in one of her interviews that she will jump out of a helicopter if Erap gets impeached. But when Erap eventually got impeached, she just responded "I lied." And then laughed.

Seeing things now with clearer eyes, I can see through MDS's weaknesses. I idolized her back then. So much. I romanticized voting for her for pres in 2016 as a first-time voter. But i turned a blind eye to how she accommodated Marcos Jr as her vp...and i also didn't know she Erap. I was in grade school when the impeachment happened and the image that stuck with me was how badass miriam was for calling out those people in the audience. It shaped my ideals of a leader: they should be sharp speakers, unforgiving, and fierce...qualities we usually see in male leaders...and the fact that MDS had those automatically made me think she's this rare diamond. To be fair, I still highly respect her...we cannot discount her fight against corruption (despite erap). I still think she could have been one of our best leaders. I just acknowledge now her missteps. But I think that's what makes VP Leni on top of any greatest could-have-beens. While she doesn't have that loud brazenness in her, her diplomacy and tactfulness coupled with putting her words into action, sincerity, humility...all necessary characteristics of not just a great leader, but as a human... someone said she's a whole of the bits and pieces of the great qualities of those who came before her. Idk if we'll ever have another Maria Leonor Gerona Robredo. I will never forget this heartbreak. 💔

P.S. I voted for MDS as president and VPLR as vice president in 2016. Had they run together, Leni would not have won. Had MDS not been sick, she could have had a fighting chance.

1. In an interview, MDS is in favor of distributing Hacienda Luisita (which led to her resignation as agrarian reform secretary in the Aquino government).
2. Cory gave her endorsement to FVR instead of MDS.
3. Worse is that, Cory and COMELEC Monsod rigged the 1992 election just to make their bet FVR win.*
* - The blackouts happened intentionally. Cory would never allow a pro-Marcos president to sit in office after her term ends in 1992 because doing so would mean that EDSA Revolution's legacy is a failure. FVR is just lucky that presidents here are elected by plurality because if they're elected by 2-round majority, combined votes of MDS, Danding, Imelda, and Laurel would crush FVR, Mitra, and Jovy altogether. This is the reason why FVR focused his campaign on portraying himself as hero of the revolution and that his party, Lakas-CMD, is a reference to "lakas ng tao" (people power). 12 years of people's distaste with the pro-Cory political establishment led to landslide victory of the 1st opposition president of post-1986 era, Erap, backed by Angara's LDP, Danding and Maceda's NPC, and MDS (even during the impeachment). Cory didn't allow Erap to finish his term that same way she did to FVR as Erap pledged to abolish the PCGG and was open to burying Marcos in the LNMB (there's an Associated Press video that proves that) that's why she, along with FVR, and Cardinal Sin installed their puppet GMA in EDSA II.
* - They did the same thing back in 2004 when FPJ had close ties with the Marcoses that's why they propped up GMA (Drilon was the sen.-pres. that time) but when Hello Garci got discovered a year later, they abandoned GMA's sinking ship, joined the opposition, and pretended that they were never friends with GMA.
It's just sad that "Yellows" will not allow politicians of different beliefs to compete in an equal playing field.
And your cancelling MDS when in fact, it's Cory all along who pushed MDS (same with Laurel) to side with the Marcoses, Dutertes, and Estradas.
