  • If you struggle with feathers, this complete tutorial will help you master the simple feather. The simple feather doesn't require any backtracking/overstitching, so its a great first feather to master. Once you have this basic shape, you can quilt any feather on a regular sewing machine.
We will go over the basic shape, how to quilt it, how to bend your feather around a curve, and some marking tips to help keep your feathers even, bouncy, and fun!

This is a long one! I wanted to show plenty of real time stitching on these feathers so you can see how the develop. I'm always working on improving my videos so if you like more real time stitching like this or want to see more time lapse, let me know! I'm still new to filming on this machine and I want to make it as great as possible :)

I'm surprised and a little puzzled as to why so few have clicked the like button. THANK YOU. I've watched quite a few feather videos and never seen , that I can remember, anyone show us feathers started this way. It makes perfect sense to me and I shall have to practise this now. Please do more as your way of drawing out the shapes to explain and then illustrate the results are excellent. I shall share this video on my longarm group so others can see your work. You are an excellent teacher.

You are the absolute best teacher. I started subscribing months ago because of it but once again you have knocked it out of the park. Your white board explanations are crafted to be as clear and concise as possible. Then when you show the technique in real time it all comes together. I really need the white board AND the real time to feel like I totally understand. More feather tutorials please. More other free motion designs would be helpful too. I only have 4 inches of quilting area at a time and need horizontal designs that fit nicely together after multiple rows so it looks like an all over pattern in the end.

This is going to be a little long, but I wanted to thank you for inspiring me to FINALLY take the plunge and start free motion quilting!! I was always enthralled with it, but intimidated by it at the same time. I tend to be really perfectionistic and could just envision lots of jerky designs with giant/miniscule stitches that I hated, mixed in with eyelashing, LOL. But I love, LOVE feathers. Over the weekend, I started a just-for-me, quilt as you go, raw edge applique Raggy Roses quilt and decided there was no time like the present to take advantage of trying free motion with individual blocks and not having to deal with cramming a big quilt through the machine on top of everything else. I remembered this video of yours and how you drew the feathers from the bottom up. It had just seemed to click and stuck with me. I took the plunge yesterday and after two practice blocks, I "went for it" and did feathers around the outside of a block, to fill the area around where the rose will be. That first block turned out so great that I "visited" it, to marvel at it over and over again yesterday (and this morning), just amazed that it looked so GREAT. It is not perfect, but it's WAY better than I ever thought I could do and I even managed to navigate the feather around the block corners. I WISH I could attach a picture! So this is my long-winded way of saying THANK YOU, Megan!!!
