2008 Ford Mondeo Mk4 2L diesel
In this video we had an intermittent light failure at the back sometimes the lights would work sometimes they would not but most of times they would work for a couple of seconds and then turn off in most modern cars for the lesser power lights they do not run on a traditional fuse circuit they are controlled by a module which monitors the resistance if it finds high resistance it will shut off whatever it controls to save the module so it's always best to know your circuit first and know what you are dealing with and with most of these things when you get a faulty you have to obviously fix it and in some cases you have to reset the module
My first career was electronics and corroded contacts was a common problem. We would use contact cleaner spray and with something like a connector, push the connectors in and out say 5 or 10 times after spraying with contact cleaner, which would sort the issue out. You can do the same with switches; with a switch you can't take them apart, but you can spray them with contact cleaner and then turn the switches again 5 times to clean them.
As an electronic engineer, and now 25 years of computing, it seems madness to have this level of automation of sensing resistance and then turning off circuits. It just leads to wasted time and effort for folks like yourself to diagnose and fix issues like this! It's just over engineering when something simpler will suffice! Let's just say too many computers and automation is not a good thing!
Btw thx for making the videos; I don't show enough appreciation and always enjoy your videos!
Thanks a lot mate glad you enjoy the video
Would WD40 work the same way?
This bloody mk4's have quite a handful of rear light problems. My mk4 has only a rear left bulb holder problem where the spring pin for the brake + (21w/5w) wire in the bulb doesn't have enough contact and the message appears that there is a problem with the rear brake light. I just lifted a bit the pin upwards to make a better contact and now the damn brake light works. It's good to know that it also can be resistance in a connector problem in similar cases so thanks for your video, it will be useful in the future if it comes to this situation :-D
Green connector, with green stuff that makes red lights to not work...🤔
Interesting!...
🤣🤣🤣🤣
Thanks you for sharing Leon!
Haha thanks mate

Well done. I learn something everyday,
but then again I probably forget something everyday.
That would be a head wrecker I'm sure for most people. Ford would have made you get a new bcm, wiring loom and tail lights....
Thanks mate
"Head wrecker" just watching !!! Darn fascinating though thanks
hia bodgit glad your back making vids mate glad the tossers haven't stopped you doing what you do BEST
They never stop me mate
Thanks for this vid have just bought a mk4 from mk3.wish i had'nt its guys like thee saves us a lot of time and money
I hope you keep posting! Good find and fix!
Thanks a lot mate
Its all shits and giggles Leon til someone giggles and shits🤣
Lol
I have a feeling this is going to help me! My 2014 C-max mk2 left brake light keeps going out but only when I have used the headlights. I thought it was the bulb holder initially but that checks out fine. Great vid!
Is there no end to your skills my man 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Lol it's not skill mate just a bit of luck
I work on refrigeration equipment, had a customer fill a connector with milk... made a bit of a mess at 240v ac. Managed to clean it out by using a short piece of multi strand copper wire in a drill, stripped a bit of insulation off and made a little wire brush out of the wire. Just an idea, might be helpful in the future!
Nice idea mate I will have to remember that
Nicely done Leon. 👍
Thanks mate
Love ya vids love learning anything and the amazing new tools Haha terminal cleaners... nicee idea
Glad you enjoyed it mate
They dont like p21 5w bulbs as well, p21 4w and they dont throw a wobbler, it must detect the current increase as a fault.
I've got the same problem but it's affecting front side light aswell. I've given .y auto spark this video as he has come to a dead end
Do you ever use contact grease? I work on Jaguars a lot, if you want electrical gremlins, they are the one to go for, I've found using even a very light smear of Vaseline can make a huge difference. Not once they have corroded, after it's cleaned again...
Hi mate yes I do just depends What I'm working on where it is
Very good solution, any idea if there is a similar green plug on a 2003 Ford Fiesta?
great stuff...can bus can issues can lead you down allsorts of weird paths..
The joys of working on cars lol
How did you manage to strip the sides of the trunk?
Had loads of ag with cheap jack Chinese bulbs off eBay. Bit the bullet put branded bulbs in.. touch wood no problems since.
100% mate you get what you pay for
Great find and fix! 😀👍
Thanks a lot Terry
Have you got a video on the mk4 mondeo front side lights not working
What a find , excellent vid
thanks mate
seems a rather dry spot for green crusties?
Leon's in Ireland. It's not called the Emerald Isle for nothing 😀
On the mk4 on a rainy day you'll find that when opening the hatch that not only the water pours out of those drainage channels leon showed but what hasn't got that far yet will flow back onto the glass and off each edge into the boot. Also the washer jet has been known to leak as well. So the boot can get quite soggy at times.
Great video well worth my time. Cheers.
Thanks a lot mate glad you enjoyed it
How do you stop the water leaking in mine pisses out when I lift lid up on boot.
Great vid as always I wonder what the voltage drop would have been on it
Don't really need to use that particular test here mate as soon as it senses high resistance it will shut off the circuit so you know you've got a problem straight away without really doing anything
top man Leon great video learning loads thank you
Glad you are enjoying them mate
Great vid Leon 👍
Thanks mate
my brake light stopped working on mondo estate both sides is there a fuse to check ? thanks
Very nice, thanks!
Anytime mate thanks for watching
Airstrip pillow for a little kip 😂🍻🍻
lol
Which fuse is for the break lights please and where is it located
Hi, I am having the same trouble with a 10 reg mondeo 2 litre saloon. Is that green plug at the back of the boot? Also the two bulb clusters on the boot lid are all rusty, where did you purchase these please. Hope you can help, cheers peter.
Hi mate go to your local Ford dealer or go to a local scrap yard
Is it the same Green connector on the estate mod?
What bulb types are needed please. I have exactly the same problem. Brake lights and number plate lights indicators and wipers work fine.
Hi mate the easiest thing to do is take the balls out and see which ones they are the bulbs hours missing are R586
always the top man!!
Thanks mate
Where do you find your wiring diagrams? They are so simple to look at.
I get them from a few sources but I cannot say because every time I mention them also them my videos gets reported for copyright strikes all I can say is a cost of Fortune thousands every year
Good to know Leon , thankyou:):)
Anytime mate thanks for watching
Thank you, cheers.
Thanks mate
Hi Leon where did you get the terminal cleaners and what make are they as I could do with a set of them.
Hi mate a good few manufacturers make them but these ones were laser
@@bodgitandleggitgarage Thanks for letting me know
I tried this but the brake light on the center(boot) still not working, replaced bulbs, checked fuse, checked wiring for corrosion and cleaned still nothing
Having the same issue , lights are working when switched , when breaking - left and middle loght wont switch on .
I’ve goy a bit of light issue on my Mondeo, my right rear position lights stays on despite switching my lights off (MOT Fail), would this be a high resistance issue also?
Good morning. I had the same problem. The fault was the intermittent control, it was faulty.
Hi just noticed my mondeo has the wrong battery fitted (lead type) as it has a smart charging system i'm told you need to fit a silver calcium battery but nobody can tell me why you need a silver battery and if having a lead type will do any damage could you please tell me ?
Hi mate does your car have a stop start system
@@bodgitandleggitgarage no it's a 08 plate
How do you fix the water dripping from the boot.
I don't know mate this is just a natural drain because of the way the rear spoiler and fixings work it is stupid I know so once the boot is closed and it's not an issue but it is stupid and annoying do not block them up as you will cause more issues in the long run
I replaced the left-hand brake bulb but still doesn't work. I suspect it's resistance in that green connector thing. How did you strip back the cabin wall ?
Also - any chance you can do a cruise control switch video ? Mine's buggered.
My mondeo is not good! Needs a new home....lol
Alan Howatt will sort it,check out his chanel
Sorted
Nice video, booom soatid!
Thanks a lot mate
Not the first boom
To slow maybe next lol
Not bad for a spit lover😉😉😉
Hahahah thanks mate
Well 10 min in and still don't know anything boreing
a bit of stripping? stay behind the camera for god's sake
You don't want to watch my next video then I do a full strip with a pole
Boom 7-th
Lol
