- "It is not how talented you are or much information you have stored in your mind but how well you use your mind that leads to high performance. The ego is the greatest source of human interference because it is always seeking approval from outside sources. In order to gain this approval, an ego mind craves outcomes. The opposite of an ego-oriented mind is a task-oriented mind, which brings focus to the skills needed to execute the performance. Dr. Craig Manning is a Human Performance Scientist and the bestselling author of The Fearless Mind. His clients include the US Ski and US Snowboarding teams, Red Bull High Performance, the Milwaukee Bucks of the NBA, and a roster of companies and professionals worldwide who seek to achieve high performance. He teaches at Brigham Young University, where he is Adjunct Professor of Performance Psychology and serves as Mental Performance Consultant for the university's athletic department.
Dr. Manning has found that the strongest correlation to human performance is cognitive control, or mental strength: It is how well we use our minds that matters most to human performance. Dr. Manning has played tennis at both the professional and collegiate levels, and has been a three-time Conference Coach of the Year at a Division 1 University. He has experienced human performance from the perspective of player, coach and applied scientist at the highest levels. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx
This video made me think that when we try to perform for our ego, and to prove something, there is this barrier in the way of pure performance. When we focus on the goal we have set and doing a good job out of enjoyment and clarity of our mission we can enter a flow state and perform more intimately with the task we have chosen.
Yes, there truly is Flow. Thank you for communicating.
Our ego is always there. If you brush your teeth, know your own name or change pants, you have an ego. What he explains is more the philosophical perspective of ego vs having a reduced one as you cannot lose your ego completely
@@IvnValmont this is a good point, if we lost our ego completely we would no longer be able to operate in the world effectively, just look at people blasted off on psychedelics who have forgotten who they are. As you say the goal is perhaps to reduce the negative impact that ego can play in our lives while still being aware of our place.
Beautifully said
Yes !!!!
1) Constant seeking of approval
2) Always focused on outcomes because of the need for constant approvals (Could also be a perfectionist)
3) Not persistent and quits easily as outcomes are difficult to achieve
4) Looks people and things to blame
5) Cannot perform under pressure because it gets anxiety if people are looking
you didn't have to expose me like that man
The five weaknesses of having a big ego. Also, reasons to be humble if you want to be truly rational.
confident humility
Really, I think he has lots of ego
The fact that self-improvement videos get such few views while entertainment videos get it in buckets tells you just how despicable people find it to work on themselves. Learn to interact with someone on the same energy level as you. It'll save you a lot of heartache.
To overcome my ego, I must learn how to confident. Just avoid being too confident. I am already working on humility as well.
my mom is a task oriented person .. a single mother raised 3 children in africa ...thats an achievment .. she always emphasized on always working hard , doing your task on time, being punctual she aint perfect to us 3 she is ..i instantly thought of her 3 min listening to the talk ,,but also had some pretty interesting insight about myself ..
your words really resonates .. thank u
Task orientated; "goals to help us stretch not stress". How tightly ego is tied to stress. Thank you.
I experienced a devastating ego death which sent me into a bad depression after my Army career failed. Recently experienced another from a failed romantic relationship, but this time I feel relief and joy from the learning experience in spite of my failure
This is one of the best talks I’ve ever heard in my life. Thank you sir for this!
one of the best TED talks I have watched....and devoured...now I just need to implement
I just wanted to say thank you for this I really needed this because I felt entitled to success .I failed to make my football team and I took it personal and was starting to get upset thinking I deserved it and started to think the coach just doesn't like me. And now I'm looking back and thinking other players have been there for years training and working hard and I'm
here for one day and expected to be the best.Micheal jordan the greatest basketball player in history was cut from his high school team due to lack of skill but look where he ended up. I realized it's not if you will fail because you will but its how respond to failures .
Thank you for sharing this
Wow, what wise insight!
Happy to see you out there yourself performing at a high level, my friend.
Key takeways:
1. Task oriented
2. Confident- humility
I prefer Confident and humility to achieve true rationality.
wow..His words inspired me a lot... Thank you TED and Manning for providing this and gave us insight to become a better person. I appreciate it!
So crucial to High Performance in business and in the greatest sport of all time tennis!!
Gold! Made me cry! Summed up my life’s challenges in 12 minutes. Thank you!
Great talk . Task oriented. Thank you, bless you. All your dreams come true.
This is exactly what I needed to hear! Thanks a million!💚
Yes, I agree to me too! I always turn to outcomes and that creates anxiety and it results in suffering! Focus on the task and that is in the present. Game on!
Dont let people tell you what is good for you and not good for you, only you know what is good for you cause only you know what you’re good at. Whatever you want to do because you know you can do it deep down in your heart, the first that shouldn’t come to your mind is people’s opinions cause people will project and manipulate. Their manipulation will cloud you and make you believe in it instead of believing what you know is true.
Wanting to Win is also part of the Ego.
Thank you Craig.
Great advice.
Right on time 😃
awesome advice
This is the best ted talk i have ever heard.
Confident humility is my new mantra. Confidence in your skills and humility as in no one is entitled to success. As Krishna said, "Ma karma phala hetur bhurmatey sangostva akarmani."
Thank you for sharing! 💙
When your focus goes to the outcome, then the ego stand up😊 so let's be tasks Maker and believing in our selves ❤❤❤
very insightful 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
I needed to hear this. Thankyou
Great insight Craig!
powerful.
Thank you
Wow!! This is speaking to me.
We all found it, great TED!
There are levels to this.
Yes great talk!
This is really amazing I am thinking to share this story with my kids tonight.
Just amazing outstanding
This transforms the way I view performance.
Brilliant!
Just brilliant
This is what the book "Ego is the Enemy" is telling about "don't be passionate."
Great talk.
I get this, very well studied and presented.
Beautiful
Omg this is so me. I need to get myself together 😭😩
Best talk
This has REALLY helped me with my trading..
Very smart discussion on ego
Confident Humility... Be Task Oriented... Nice Content... Very Timely...
Ty
Task oriented vs ego 🤘
task oriented -> persistent, performs good under pressure as it sets focus on the task
Ego oriented -> gets approval from outcomes( outcomes come from the future where also fear originates from)
Ego oriented mind has a bad work ethic, sets extreme goals, not persistent, performs bad under pressure
If we are ever going to survive on this planet, we have to quiet our minds and keep our egos in check. Presence is needed. Don't forget to mark a special day on your calendar: World Ego Awareness Day (WEAD) is on May 11th of this year.
It's hard to hear but it needs to be heard.
Interesting.
Great talk. Oriented, not orientated -- common mistake. Like people who say let's have time for socialization instead of socializing.

Not the best TED on ego but pretty good
yeah
This is why I trip
Cut the ego and you awaken.
My children called out my name and my husband's name, Mama and Dada.
Not ma'n and woman. Nameless identities, to keep us following childless father's and mother's (priests and Nuns.)
It is time to cut ego , know self , to see and hear what is in front of you. The animals know they came from Mama. Not a fathers spirit and woman's body, the priests talk about. That is a duality, they who follow spiritually have been reborn in. The rainbow
Okay ill bite, so then whats the point of doing a task if we dont care about the outcome?
watching 'The Last Dance' showed how big an ego player Michael Jordan was... but then again, he is the greatest of all time... hmmm interesting
it didn't matter because he always focused on getting better
His ego helped him to become better Cristano ronaldo is the Sam has big ego but very good ego not toxic one like most of people
hmm not great talk sad
I have seen better talks on Ego to be honest.
This is nonsense. This only makes sense if you remove A BIT of your ego, but if you remove it 100% you just don’t care about developing any skills or helping anybody, because at the end, ego is what creates all non animalistic motivations (and some animalistic too).
I dont think the goal is to remove your ego. I think it is to manage it and shape it so it does not hinder you
japan will take the kurils sakhalin and vladivostok south korea will take north korea.
Interesting, but not jaw dropping talk.
This accent is sending me west
The Best !!
