I understand why Jack wanted to declare Meg as his sister. One the one thing it was the commercial side, a brother and sister band would appeal more than a husband and wife. Now one may claim Jack was never unto the commercial side as his music was personal, not commercial. No and yes, yes in the sense that down to the basics, beyond financial success, artists want to be loved, to be popular. and thus they pay attention to their image. The image of a husband and wife is generally not one that gathers the people around. It should not be that way, but that is the way it is. People want to feel their beloved artists as "theirs", sometimes as a kind of imaginary lover, and being a couple, even an unmarried one, cannot project that image. Famous artist couples famously split - I can think of ABBA for example. And the latter was also the elephant in the room : Jack and Meg had married before forming the band, but already during their early stages they were having issues that led to divorce in 2000, again before the band soaring in popularity. Thus they did not want to mingle their personal life with their musical career. It was a lie indeed, but not one out of malice.
