The 1973 Road Cycling World Championship was held in the Spanish city of Barcelona with start and finish in the emblematic Montjuic Park. It was a tough race. 248 km in 17 laps of a circuit with the well-known ascent to Montjuic, which made it a very demanding test.
The world championship was going to be a duel between Eddy Merckx and the Spaniard Luis Ocaña, who had been the best riders during that long season. Ocaña had won his first Tour de France, while the Belgian cyclist won the Giro and the Vuelta a España. Merckx didn´t participate in that year's Tour.
An expectant crowd filled, from the early hours of the morning, the circuit of Barcelona. Nobody wanted to miss the great duel of the best cyclists in the world.

Only a mistake if Eddy knew he didn't have the legs for a sprint. Maertens clearly providing a lead out, not his own sprint from 500 meters. Yes he was easily the fastest sprinter of the four but followed team orders. Of course Freddy, per his book, Fall From Grace, thinks it was the Campagnolo versus Shimano battle and that Eddy didn't say anything to make sure that Freddy, on Shimano components, didn't win.

I don't think they had anything to do with brands. It was more of a struggle of egos. Thanks for your great analysis

Perhaps Maertens was in two minds wondering whether to set up Merckx for the sprint?
Or perhaps one of them should have said to the other "Go for the win" and that would have let them both know exactly where they stood.

You argue that Merckx's mistake was to trust Freddy Maertens too much. Freddy Maertens argues that Merckx's mistake was to not trust him enough. ^^

Everybody says Merckx lost it, and did not give Freddy the go ahead. But how could you say Gimondi was not able to win on his own, he was still a exceptional rider in his own right, he did what was needed to win. I think it’s a bit unfair to detract from him the thought he could of won even if the sprint was a three way, maybe he knew Merckx was blown and was marking Freddy, he made the move and won. That’s cycling sometimes brains trumps brawn.

Gimondi was not an exceptional rider, when he was in good moon he could randomly win some classics and so ride as a champ that day but never an outclass. The age of Merckx lacked totally of outclass riders and of true champs as well ,unlike the age of Coppi which can be ranked the golden age of road cycling, so full of great champs and outclasses .

I think you better do a bit more research my son. If Merckx was the chosen one, on that day he was fallen. My faith is in myself, it is not external. I do not worship idols.

Stopped to watch since the first words : " The best rider in cycling history "🙂.That's only for clueless people having summary knowledge, Merckx has the biggest palmares but this does not mean he can be ranked the best in cycling history. This title goes to Fausto Coppi, the greatest ever and better by far than Merckx in all cycling skills out of sprinting.
