What a pleasure to watch and share your enthusiasm for the Rolliflex cameras. I have a 3.5e planar bought many years ago but no time to use. Now I'm retired I hope to see if my photos can match the beauty of the camera!
...hey, WIFE, your hubby is spending all the money on Rolleis!!! Sorry about that, mate, had to do it! :) I just got me an expensive box, love it to death, can't wait to spend the rest of my money on film and shoot like crazy, my wife is fine with it, gets me out of her hair...I love the videos, so entertaining, I love your humour!!!...looking at a Rolleiflex to spurge on, Ebay, quite expensive but what the heck... thank you so much for all your hard work, you are a treasure, all the best from Germany!!!
Dear Peter, I love your videos! I am a frenchman (nobody's perfect I guess) who recently went back to film photography. I have become an avid collector now and just bought my first Rollei. I was able to pick the right one thanks to your expert advice and I absolutely love it. I do mostly street portraits and it's so easy with a TLR as so many people are curious about it. People never refuse when I ask to take their portrait. Anyway, thanks for all the great videos. They really make a difference. Watching them always puts me in such a great mood. I'm going to watch your Pentax 67 and Leica M6 videos now as they are next on my list of beauties to buy AND USE! You have yourself a nice day now!!!
the 7 people who disliked this obviously dislike a man with a personality who knows what's he's talking about. This was more interesting to watch than other youtubers.
Your style is indeed inimitable Peter. i love your videos, they are very funny & informative. I no longer use film cameras & have fallen into the world of digital photography. I used to use a Ricoh KR10 which i liked very much but now I use Fuji cameras and results are closest to real film as I could find. Keep it up
BREAKING NEWS ---- I had the 1956-59 E Xenotar repaired at last and the 3.5 F Planar serviced -- now E Xenotar works sweetly, even the delayed action and the meter works !
@@JenniferM13 The best I can do is to give you the 'Link' to my Rolleiflex E 2.8 Xenotar album on Flickr -- some are the 'Before Service' especially the one of the Old Lady showing edge fogging. So you know, your Rolleiflex 3.5E3 model also has 6 elements in the lens. I researched this to be sure, and both Prochnow (who was a Rollei technician and designer) and John Philips, a Rollei expert who wrote "The Classic Rollei: A Definitive Guide" confirm this. That includes an E3 with either the 3.5 Xenotar or the 3.5 Planar lens - both have the 6-element lens. The later models of the 3.5F (type 3 and later) also have a 6-element lens.
Fantastic video! Love your take on bokeh. Made me pop a roll of film into the Rolleiflex and pop the camera into my bag. Can't wait to head out and shoot it!
+edma22 : Many thanks -- glad you enjoy my 'style' -- I try not to 'Waffle' and actually show some RESULTS! I am planning another one soon on the Mamiya Press Super 23.
Hi, Peter, I am Rakesh from New Delhi last night I was cleaning my grandfather's Rolleiflex and just by silly mistake I chipped the front element was very sad all night and all day as this is very first thing I have broken in 35 years of my active camerawork buy your lovely video made my mood changed completely, loved your accent, keep it up peter keep it up come to India with your twin lens to shoot Taj Mehal.
I thoroughly enjoyed watching this video - very enlightening and entertaining! I don't have a Rolleiflex, but I do have a Mamiya C33, which is somewhat similar, probably more so in appearance. Perhaps, one day I'll get the Rolleiflex. Thanks for posting. I am now a subscriber.
They all look awesome! I own a T (gray model with that RRE in its taking lens glass) and I love it. I am still dreaming of a 2.8 and that makes me watch this over and over again.
Rolleiflexes are my favourite cameras. A joy to shoot with and the results are superb! Was sad to hear the company that made them recently went out of business... although I admit I was surprised that they were still in business at all up to that point!
Fantastic, excellent information as always Peter. Much prefer your straightforward style to the alternative. You'll be in trouble if Mrs Elgar sees these! Keep up the good work.
I enjoyed your British presentation, even though I’m an American. I can’t speak for other states, but you (and your wife) are welcome to visit Texas and buy all the Rollei accessories you can find. Cheers...
So kind -- many thanks ! When I am a bit better from my Bowel Cancer Stuff and can 'travel' more would love to come - have been to USA several times but never Texas -- wish Brits were not charged $14 for an 'Esta Visa' though !
Great video and lovely Brit wit! Long time seeing your flickr and specially meaningul because of the philippines, the very own Pardo and Minglanilla! I always have dreams of travelling there again with a Medium Format, I have a brutal Fuji 6x9 yet Rolleiflexes still look too lovely -- classics are classics. Good job my friend. I reviewed some vintage lenses in my channel, my favorite thing to talk about. I just bought one of these on eBay and have learned much from your vids. Big respect. Now I will check out your Weston meter review
Thanks Peter I didnt know about the double exposure switch, gonna give that bash .I have a 2.8f which takes pictures that amaze me superb cameras, I have the expense box as well but I think the rollei beats them on the pleasure and ease side the Hasselblad is nice though!!. Great Video Brian from Seaford
In a comment below, I mentioned that I have the Mamiya C33 but may one day get a Rollei. Well, I got one off of EBay, which arrived yesterday. It's a 3.5 MX EVS. Seems like everything is working as it should; I'll know for sure when I get the film processed. I'm very happy to have it because I've been wanting one. It's a lot smaller than the C33, but I love both of them. Just thought I'd let you know. Oh, I also have the "expensive box," a 500 cm, which I got several months ago.
Sir I have 2 Rollei E3 with 75mm f/3.5 Xenotar and you are right they are SHARP sharper than people's 80mm Planar f/2.8s I can tell you. I like your style, gonna copy it, and ring up all my dying friends, see what I can go round and collect . HAHAHA great video thanks!!!!
Brilliant video... My mentor lent me his E3 to coax me into medium format. It worked... I have a Tessar, but I miss the sharpness of the 3.5 Planar... If you should begin feeling unwell, I would take very good care of your E3... :)
Thanks for the lovely video. I've got 13 of those little buggers and I've just pulled them out of storage after 15 years or so. Best portraits I ever took came out of Rolleiflexes. I'm surprised you didn't make any square prints. Rollei had that down long before Instagram.
@@theoldfilmbloke Nope, no 220 or whiteface. Mine are all from the 50's except for one nice model T from the 60's. I used them for about 20 years to shoot portraits of kids at Little League baseball games. What an amazing tool! I'm gonna clean them all up and put 'em on eBay.
My 4 Rolleiflexes are a 3.5E3 with the Carl Zeiss Planar, a Rolleiflex 3.5C with the Schneider Xenotar, a Rolleiflex T with the Carl Zeiss Tessar and a Rolleiflex 3.5 MX-EVS type 2 with the Schneider Xenar. I also have an early 1950's Rolleicord III-2 with the Schneider Xenar. Unfortunately, they no longer get used nearly enough.A very enjoyable video! Thanks!
What is a 3.5C Rollei? From your lens description - the camera has a Xenotar lens, the only 3.5 Rolleis that have the Xenotar (or Planar) lens are the 3.5E, 3.5E2, 3.5E3 and 3.5 F. Is it possible that your 3.5C (I've never heard of that model) had a Xenar lens (rather than a Xenotar lens)? Or is your 3.5C (you may have made a typo) actually a 3.5E (also known as a K4C), which would have the Xenotar lens?
My boss liked Zeiss Planar best. I thought it had low contrast compared to the Schnieder lenses. Schneider had superior coating on their lenses. Rodinal is still available.
Ha ha ! Just having 2 of them serviced at Great Cost so i am 'Hanging On In This World' for a little longer to USE them with my huge stash of Outdated FILLUM !!
My favourite Roleiflex video on CZcams by a mile I just love these cameras,Peter is the 2.8 scratched lens noticeable on the photographs it takes ? I have the Rollekin 16 and 35 mm kits. Wish you lived next door it would be tea biscuits and Rolleiflex talk.:):)
Harry - many thanks for your support -- well i have taken some on the scratched lens one and not noticed any flare BUT the last film has light fogging down one side and Rolleiflex does not have that horrible FOAM sealing that goes rotten so i think it must be the back is lose where a small metal peg is missing on the bottom latch.
BTW I believe the film speed indicator on the 2.8f and 3.5f actually couples to the exposure meter so it's actually important to always set it for the film speed installed in the camera otherwise your exposures will be off.
Well as I use all 'outdated ' film now ( even my FRESH is now OUtdated !! ) I set it to a lower ASA than on the box for B&W and C41 Colour but not for E6 colour.
If you remove the lens and take it to vision express or similar they can repolish the scratch out for a small fee. I did this when my compound bow archery sight got damaged. It cost £30 to repolish which was a third the price of buying a new replacement.. just a thought for you.. great video thank you for sharing 👍😁
I don't miss too many aspects of the UK since moving to Canada. However,I do really miss great characters such as yourself! The Canadian/American camera enthusiast seems to lack something on the character side, methinks! Keep up the good work!!
Lovely stuff Peter... I remembered buying my 1st twin lens (Rolleiflex f3.5 Tessar) from Peter Donkin at Barking P.S. back in 1978. I also totally agree with you about 'bokeh', I think it is too much about technique but forgetting the more important 'The Exact Moment'. Anyway I loved seeing these old cameras, I'm waiting for one on a 'Speed Graffic'- I prabably spelt that wrong...nice to hear you and see your photos..keep up the British way :) Lewis Baucutt
+lewis baucutt : Thanks for your support -- you kept THAT quiet that Peter Donkin had a Rolleiflex 3.5 Tessar !! - thought he had only Canon FTbn and F1 and later a Bronnie !! Do you remember Norman Andrews who won lots with his Rollei photo 'Ceremony of the Keys, Tower of London' taken on Kodak Panatomic -x processed in Kodak High Definition developer ? It took me YEARS to get that Rollei 2.8F Planar off John Hone the Club Chairman !
Excellent review Peter. I recently bought a 3.5F and it looks superbly made. Question about the shutter dial for you. How much resistance is normal when turning the dial? I find the aperture dial is really smooth, while the shutter dial, while still usable, leaves marks on one’s thumb in prolonged use
Mr mamiyapress -- many thanks for your support -- i am only a 'Learner' at this 'Video Game' !! I had a friend in my Camera Club now deceased who had a 124G -- it had the better 'Yashinon' lens and he used it for local Press Photography in the days when you could submit B&W photos and they were 'sharp' enough BUT I think some of the metal cogs inside were not strong enough and would wear out quicker.
How is your friend Bart? Nice video though I had a Rolli with a Tessar f3.5 I took a photograph with this that got published in Armature Photographer back in the 80's it paid for the camera (Velvia 50) The only other time I got a picture published was in 2003 for a book cover taken with a Bronica S2a and a 100mm f2.5 Carl Zeiss Jenna (Fuji Astia 100) Really miss those cameras! When I was using the Rolli I was measuring the exposure with a Seconic studio deluxe and the meter I used with the Bronica was a Gossen lunasix 3 Really miss my film days!

Hello Peter, Always enjoy your videos, most e entertaining + informative! Your vast experience + wonderful humour are unsurpassed- thank you. I inherited a Yashicamat 124 tlr some years ago from my late father. It's in mint condition, however I've never got round to using it, partly due to ignorance of its aperation! Does it have It's own take up spool, + are there any pitfalls to avoid in operation? I do hope you are keeping well. Regards Derek
DEREK -- Never had the chance to use a Yashicamat but always wanted a go with one so I am not au fait with its operation -- It MUST have a take-up spool in one side surely ? You need spare 120 empty spool - every time I develop I 120 I dump one with he backing paper !
I was recently given an old but in mint condition Rolleiflex serial no 3.5F 2804441 with Carl Zeiss No 4178288 Planar 1:3.5 f=75 and Hiedesmat 1 :2 8/75 No 3083669 with meter etc would you kindly advise me as to how old is this Rollie, many thanks in advance.
i had a look at the Rollei Club site and found yours is a 3.5 F type 3 BUT there was NO DATE I could find - I reckon it is about 1970's hope you USE it carefully ! get some 120 B&W film and process it yourself as i do !
Hello Peter, I’ve enjoyed your images on Flickr for years. It’s nice to finally put a face/voice to the pictures lol. You’re right about bokeh, but here in U.S. we pronounce it “bo-kay” with emphasis on the 1st syllable. One question though, why do you not print as square, to show the entire image? I print all of mine centered on 16x20 paper (Foma), and don’t mind the bits of white all around. You’ve found a new subscriber, and I’m quite envious of your entire camera collection (although I do primarily shoot Rollei TLRs).
Good Morning Joe ( Well it IS Morning Here in UK !! ) Many Thanks for kind words -- I find I have to 'crop' the square format mostly as if I put in the prints 'Full Frame' to Competitions and there is a lot of 'space' around the Judge would slate them !
Well- sometimes you can get them from Camera Club Members who no longer use them -- we have an Old Member with a lovely ROLLEI -- Never uses it in Brentwood Photographic Club ! i was given a nice Rollei 'T' set with pentaprism from a Deceased Camera Club Member .
@@justyjust Oh Dear -- you could have joined BRENTWOOD down the road from Chelmsford and unlike Chelmsford Camera Club we don;t charge a £2 'Attendance Fee' . you can find one in West London by searching Club on the site for the Photographic Alliance of Great Britain. www.thepagb.org.uk
The winder mechanism on these was unreliable and sometimes broke. When I was a wedding photographer I used two Yashica mat cameras which were bomb proof.
Nice one! p.s. 21:31 did you say Brentwood, Essex? I lived there and in Shenfield for approx 2 1/2 years, such beautiful memories. Than I had to go back to London, as my photography work was all there.
+Matteo Prezioso : YES -- Shenfield is part of Brentwood Area !! You could have come to Brentwood Photographic Club-- good to read you have some 'photographic WORK' -- we are all OUT OF WORK here now -- all Freelancers and Studios gone BROKE !
Peter Elgar Yes, it is a very sad situation. I actually have reverted to film because I could not stand digital. I have tried and tried to like it, but the more I tried the more I disliked it. It is not easy, but hey you only live once! :) I wish I knew about the Brentwood Photographic Club, I didn't at that time. I do miss it though, such a lovely place. I am now living in Colombia, still as a photographer. Here things are even worse! I am now in the process of fixing one of my medium formats, a 3.5F Planar. I've bought it for next to nothing (less than 10 pounds) but it had some serious issues. Finally, three years later, it's been restored to its full glory but I've got the last problem to solve: a problem with the film counter, which gives me it's ready to shoot when the film is not in yet, so I basically lose approx. 2 exposures for rolls. I'll have to fix that, too and then I'm ready to go. Keep up with the good work, I really enjoy your videos, ciao!
NO -- I can REMEMBER the settings well but on some 10x8" prints i did for sending off to photo magazines I write it on the back as they want 'technical details -- but the days when Magazines accept real PRINTS are now over !

Still one of the best roll film cameras on the market! If you see one for sale at silly prices then buy it.
Great video. 😊
4!!!!! What I would do to have just one of them! Care to send me one for a noble cause?
Sorry -- I am a 'Noble Cause' myself !
The inimitable one and only Peter Elgar, of course! Those Rolleiflexes had never looked so good except in your hands. Keep clacking!
YES -- I appreciate them and use them in rotation carefully !
Anyway I loved seeing these old cameras, I'm waiting for one on a 'Speed Graffic'- I prabably spelt that wrong...nice to hear you and see your photos..keep up the British way :)
Lewis Baucutt
+lewis baucutt : Thanks for your support -- you kept THAT quiet that Peter Donkin had a Rolleiflex 3.5 Tessar !! - thought he had only Canon FTbn and F1 and later a Bronnie !! Do you remember Norman Andrews who won lots with his Rollei photo 'Ceremony of the Keys, Tower of London' taken on Kodak Panatomic -x processed in Kodak High Definition developer ? It took me YEARS to get that Rollei 2.8F Planar off John Hone the Club Chairman !
Great video I use a 1937 Rolleiflex 3.5 that cost me 50p
Some useful information, music and graphics don't matter content is what is important. Thanks.
Yes-- the shutter dial IS a bit stiffer BUT yours maybe have some dirt under it as it should not be as stiff as described.
You are my new favourite photographer on CZcams, I have subscribed and I love those sharp images Peter. What do you think of the Yashicamat 124G?
Mr mamiyapress -- many thanks for your support -- i am only a 'Learner' at this 'Video Game' !! I had a friend in my Camera Club now deceased who had a 124G -- it had the better 'Yashinon' lens and he used it for local Press Photography in the days when you could submit B&W photos and they were 'sharp' enough BUT I think some of the metal cogs inside were not strong enough and would wear out quicker.
I just bought a Rolleiflex 3.5f, its being serviced, wife doesnt know 😂😂😂😂
I love old people.
I was 15 years old when I started photography -- hope you reach my age !
How is your friend Bart? Nice video though I had a Rolli with a Tessar f3.5
I took a photograph with this that got published in Armature Photographer back in the 80's it paid for the camera (Velvia 50)
The only other time I got a picture published was in 2003 for a book cover taken with a Bronica S2a and a 100mm f2.5 Carl Zeiss Jenna (Fuji Astia 100)
Really miss those cameras!
When I was using the Rolli I was measuring the exposure with a Seconic studio deluxe and the meter I used with the Bronica was a Gossen lunasix 3
Really miss my film days!
Sadly my Friend BART DIED a few months after he had given me the Camera but I had taken a nice Portrait of him using it which I gave to his Daughter.
@@theoldfilmbloke so sad to hear this Peter Oh death where is your sting oh o death where is your victory? Thanks be to God for we have the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ! ❤
I too would like to put my hands on a Rolleiflex TLR.
Hi Peter, Any chance that you are selling them on yourself?
Hello Peter,
Always enjoy your videos, most e entertaining + informative!
Find a job as retailer at the Rollei works in Braunschweig.
"Are you free mister Elgar"
JACO -- I would have LOVED it BUT the ROLLEI company went BROKE -- all lost their Jobs
Hi peter blessings to you
Do you know the best place to pick up a Rolleiflex in the UK?? Cheers
@@theoldfilmbloke I may try and join a local club shame as of 4 years ago I was living in Chelmsford which is not far from you now in West London.
The feeler roller mechanism was typical of German over engineering.
Yashica used the simpler Rolleicord system.
The winder mechanism on these was unreliable and sometimes broke.
When I was a wedding photographer I used two Yashica mat cameras which were bomb proof.
What should I do with my rolleiflex camera if it is not producing 120 films !! Let me know please.
Not sure what is the Question -- do you mean 120 film is 'Not Available' ? It IS still available!
Nice one!
I wish I knew about the Brentwood Photographic Club, I didn't at that time.
How did you remember or your f-stops etc. from those old photo's? Do you write every one down?
NO -- I can REMEMBER the settings well but on some 10x8" prints i did for sending off to photo magazines I write it on the back as they want 'technical details -- but the days when Magazines accept real PRINTS are now over !
Bokeh Business! Don't tell the wife :)
😂 Very entertaining! Where's Gromit?
