    The Philippe Starck citrus juicer you show on your shelf is notorious for squeezing juice poorly and making a mess, so while it may be nice conversation object to have in your home, you're better off using a traditional handheld juicing press than that model. I have seen it make the mess firsthand. Some people buy it because Starck designed it, others unknowingly simply because they liked the look of it. No one will ever buy it because it makes better juice. I guess if you're Alessi and you're making them, you don't really care why, so long as people pay the big money for it (~$80). The same company (Alessi) also made 10,000 gold plated versions of the same juicer, which were never intended to actually be used, since the citric acid in the juice will discolour the gold plating on those juicers. I always thought it was meant to resemble a war of the worlds-style alien, but I can see now it is modeled after a citrus seed (Starck originally modeled it on a squid).

    • @MakersMuse
      @MakersMuse  Před 6 lety +2

      Absolutely! As an industrial designer I find the object itself perplexing and honestly after studying it and similar for years I had to pick one up. It cost AUD$175 and will literally never be used for lemon juicing. I heard about the gold plated ones haha. Definitely a ridiculous purchase but a great study into the whole idea of emotion design.

    I'd like to add stealing designs is a dangerous route to take. Its also not much help to developing your own creative look and feel. Take the fake product market, clothing, watches, phones etc. These industries exist because enough people want the high priced originals just for the look, to be "seen" with them. They dont care their Fake TAG watch doesn't tell the time or the inner stitching on their "designer" jacket unravelled when they put it on. On the flip side many more people value the functionality and quality of the item. So if you are looking to start a business producing products it may be tempting to take an easy path by stealing an existing design but this i likely to cause you legal difficulties and creating a negative association with your brand name that you may never overcome.
    You can gain ideas by looking at the patents of products you are influenced by and see exactly what aspects have been explitictly defined such as Coca Cola's Dynamic Ribbon Device. It could be shape, colours, fonts, wording, anything really. So perhap you will find the aspect you'd like to imitate is not protected if you use it in a different context. Or there are standardised features that make manufacturing/transport/use easier. For example screw caps often come in one of two sizes and they are interchangeable across many products. Grab the lib from a 2L bottle of coke, wash it and you'll find you can use it on that bottle of Benadril cough liquid, saves having to deal with childproof caps when you have no children. You should be able to pop the child proof cap on your soft drink bottles to reduce consumption.
