  • Tomari Chinto is a classic karate kata from Okinawa's Tomari district. Dating back to the 18th century this kata contains many positions and applications utilising joint manipulations (wrist, elbow, shoulder, neck, etc) in defence against being seized and hit.

    Pulling against a pull will work if you are bigger and stronger than your opponent. If you are not, you are simply pulling his punch toward you while you are doing nothing to block the incoming punch. I’m 5’6” and I think it is Christmas when my opponent pulls me into him, no matter how big he is. That aside you are right that this opening represents several ways to defend against a grab. but as you say, you should work on the fundamentals and basic physics before trying to learn various techniques.
