/* ---- VIDEO INFORMATION ---- */
Welcome to the Heavy Spoilers show, I'm your host Paul and this video we're breaking down Return Of The Jedi.
-
Filled with easter eggs, hidden details and lots of things going on with it, this tops off what's arguably one of the greatest trilogies of all time.
Throughout this video we're gonna be going through it scene by scene to talk about all the things you missed as well as those special edition changes.
noooooooooooooo
Coming off the back of two of the biggest blockbusters of all time, George Lucas was faced with the almost impossible task of sticking the landing for a film series that had completely changed cinema. I know looking back that people tend to complain about the ewoks and how Lukes plan makes no sense but when I watched this as a kid I never had any problem with it. I guess I've been lucky in that because of my love for it that none of the criticisms ever bothered me and it's still a movie that I absolutely love.

Just found this channel the other day, great content man.
Me -great channel, I love you.
Heavy spoilers -I know
Kasden actually wanted Luke to die, Not Han. The reason people think he wanted Han to die as well is because of the way Empire of Dreams is edited. (it was just Harison that wanted Han to die)
If you read the story meetings from John Rinzler and Paul Duncan's book, they reveal that he wanted either Luke or Yoda to die and George only gave in to having Yoda die.
And the concept of Han dying on Endor and Luke going off into the sunset was never written at all. That was just false info about the production spread by Gary Kurtz (because he's petty).
I like your mention of the deleted scene with Luke fine tuning his lightsaber. It's omission is my only gripe with the movie. I felt it would cement how he has matured and is now his own master.
Anyway, thanks again for yet another rewatchable review ✋️😌
Good shit but did you just spoil spider webs for everyone without a single fucking spoiler warning?
Heavy spoilers indeed!
Surprised you haven't done a vid on the continental yet its quite good
For me, this is where it ends. The Empire collapses, the last two Sith are gone, The New Republic is formed, and Luke brings back the Jedi Order.
It's the only way I can sleep at night
It doesn't end here😂😂😂😂😂
Get over yourself
Star wars is almost like theology to some people today. Some get mad when the orthodox is now heterodox and vice versa
Liar. You still watched every single content and even liked some of it like the Mandalorian and currently Ashoka.
In regards to Vader looking at Luke's new lightsaber, I always thought Vader was thinking about how it looks like Obi-Wan's lightsaber and possibly reflecting that he failed to have that connection with his son.
That’s a great observation!
I always thought it was so powerful that Luke spoke with Vader instead of fighting him. This big, bad villain is standing right there and he not only tries to appeal to him, he even turns his back to him showing that he’s let go all intention to fight.
I was wondering if that was what he was supposed to learn from the tree. But also, why would a place imbued with the Dark Side of the Force want to help you learn to resist it?
@@sandal_thong8631I think I read something that the dark side of the force helps hide them because it fogs everything. That's why they choose places with it.
And in the sequels they say he (Without even talking it out) tried killing Ben solo in his sleep
These Heavy Spoiler lookbacks are so great, think I actually enjoy these more than current movie/show releases. Paul as a host just puts these videos above the rest....great work!
Same. I watch these types of videos more than new movies.
I didn’t realize how much I would appreciate these videos about older movies.
I thought that I would be bored with them, but am pleasantly surprised that there is SO much info to still learn!
What I always liked about this was how originally Vader told Luke to "release your anger, only your hatred could defeat me" and in this fight he does so and overwhelms Vader just as he was told.
Nobody ever mentions how the Scout Troopers were modelled after BMX riders Helmet and Masks, this made them so cool to us as kids in the 80's as we all had BMX's!
There were actually 2 reasons they didn’t use Wookiees. 1) they physically saved money because they didn’t have to find a lot of tall people and give them full suits 2) the Life Day special was so horrible that no one wanted to touch Kashyyyk ever again.
Are you implying that short people cost less than taller people?
Costumes will be cheaper. Less material used, less time to make. So yeah indirectly.
They do. @@whoozyyy
Yeah, they were really hurting for money. You say stupid things. 😆
@whoozyyy I've always heard you get half off shorts
One of the best Star Wars films and the true cilmax to The Skywalker Saga that is totally satisfying. Vader's Story ends brilliantly and Ian deserved a Oscar nomination. This is The Ending for The Skywalker Saga for me.
I agree with the criticisms never bothering me. I was born in 77, so this movie was exactly what I needed. I loved the Ewoks and thought Luke’s Jabba plan was perfect. Thinking about it, it’s not much different from the joker in dark knight. He knew he’d be caught and that Jabba would have him killed with everyone.
Carrie Fisher was such a beautiful woman. May she rest in peace in a galaxy far far away. She'll be remember always
The original Space Baddie and diplomat 🙏🏼
I wish she realized her force powers earlier and became a Jedi like Luke tho
@@dreworyan5652 that would've been cool
I think I would have preferred there to be another woman in the galaxy who's Luke's sister.
"Hey, check it out, it's another chick. The only other chick in the galaxy."
"I don't like her."
-Family Guy.
12:08. "We don't have to play fuck around and find out."
Without a doubt, your best line EVER!
My first memory on this planet is watching RotJ in the theater at 3 years old. The final of the greatest trilogy ever made. Don't @ me. As always Paul, fantastic work. May the force be with you. Always.
And also with you
@keithpollock9463 hey
Now I need to know if you have memories of other planets?!
I always thought that the Jedi in the title was collective rather than singular, and it represented the Jedi in general coming back into the forefront of galaxy
Yeah.
That's what it means.
Vader's "Noooo!" at his moment of redemption remains the most bizarre creative choice I've ever seen inflicted upon a movie. The first time I saw a clip of it I was utterly convinced it had to be a joke, like someone had just ripped the soundtrack from _ROTS_ and dropped it into the scene for shiggles. I know it was actually re-recorded, but either way it doesn't work on any level: logic, character, narrative, aesthetic, dramatic, continuity. It breaks absolutely everything about that moment.
I'm almost tempted to believe that Lucas must have made a side-bet with someone that he could take one of the most derided and parodied aspects of _ROTS,_ shoe-horn it into _ROTJ_ and still have fans spend $$$ on it even as they screamed blue murder at the sacrilege. He must have had a reason but I can't think of any that doesn't involve at least a partial mid-digit to the fandom. I know "It's like poetry, it rhymes," George, but it doesn't have to *literally use the same sound* for no sane reason.
_ROTJ_ remains my favourite of the saga since I saw it at the cinema in 1983. _Empire_ *is* structurally and narratively the better movie, but _Jedi_ is just wall-to-wall entertainment. I've must have watched it close to 100 times in various formats. But I've never bought the Blu-ray nor watched it on Disney+, solely because of that scene. I love pretty much everything about _Star Wars,_ am very tolerant of the new, forgiving of missteps, and in every other aspect about as far removed from the "ruined my childhood" ranting of toxic fandom as it's possible to get. But what was done to that iconic moment... it's painful just to think about it. Terrible, unnecessary butchery that hurts my actual soul. I don't think I'll ever understand it. I need to lie down in a darkened room now.
ROTJ always gonna be my favorite despite its flaws it’s the first one I remember watching
Fun fact, in the storyboard of RotJ it actually shows luke force kicking the guy, meaning that the famous force kick joke, was actually planned to be a force kick from the start.
I swear there is a Wilhelm scream during the Coruscant celebrations where they were lifting the Stormtrooper above them….
Damn I fell for the "old jedi mind trick" and hit the like button! I love this channel! 😂😂😂❤❤❤
Paul , MT and you are killing it right now along with the weekly podcasts with Greg Alba. Your videos truly help me get through my most horrible days at work. I appreciate the channel and your brilliantly edited videos . One love mate.
Ah thank you so much man, really feel like the channels came into its own these last couple of months and I appreciate that so much
@@heavyspoilers I came across this channel a few weeks ago with the Alien breakdowns, which were awesome (still waiting for Alien: Resurrection, unless I've missed it somewhere), and I'm loving it. The humour and the little bits I'd never noticed make everything so interesting. Well done, Paul. Keep it up, mate.
Well, Paul, you did it again. I was an obsessive 16 year old when Star Wars hit the theaters in 1977, and it changed my life profoundly. I dove fully into this universe and learned / knew everything possible to learn. 💗
With that said, you have taught me something I hadn't known in each of the original episodes. You being able to do this (in so many things, i.e. TV shows I love) is one of the top reasons I love you so much. 💋🥰 Thanks, mate. 🙏😊
Ah thanks so much mate, really glad I still found something to uncover with how much people have obsessed over these movies, really means a lot
He’s a man Cole 😮😮😮😮
@heavyspoilers Just found this channel yesterday night and I’m hooked. Watching ur breakdowns are almost as good as watching the films themselves. Big up bro. Love it. 👊🏼👌🏻😉
Using the mind trick to hit the LIKE button was amazing. I ran it back a 2nd time just to make sure I didn't imagine it, really well done. 👍
Loved the weekly planet reference lmao. As soon as I heard “working title Blue Harvest” something in my brain triggered
Loved this movie, came out when I was 20, great memories with friends. Saw it many times in the theaters, I remember a friend sitting there wondering and was concerned that Luke was going to be turned into the dark side. The movie was so much fun, early 80’s was a lot of fun, and this was part of it. Although, it is like Star Wars in general, timeless.
Thank you for this massive magnum opus gift to Star Wars fans.
6:18 always great to know someone else that loves the weekly planet!
In almost 40 years I never considered that angle of thought behind Vader blocking Luke's strike toward the Emperor. Vader had openly talked about wanting to depose the Emperor, but the Emperor manipulated the situation to where Vader couldn't allow Luke to do that. Whether it was a kneejerk reaction on Vader's part to keep Luke from turning, or a calculated move because he wants Luke to join him and not succumb to the Emperor's will - that's brilliant. And also a huge coincidence because frankly Lucas is not that skilled a writer to come up with it on purpose.
This is why StarWars is so good. There’s a reason behind everything and it truly shows how emotions affect people.
"Star Wars is accidentally brilliant, Lucas bad." -you
@@TommyTombstone Yep! Lucas had great ideas in the broadstrokes, but execution of those ideas or the additional fine details to them, he's bad at.
@@civildisorder "It's like poetry, it rhymes." Revenge of the Sith refutes your argument pretty much entirely.
@@civildisorderthat makes no sense.
Han Solo was feeling the heat and cupped a feel.
It always seemed that way to me, too.
Ok yea I peeped that! 😂😂😂
They were secretly dating at the time, so it was within the context of a relationship
1:04 Even as a 38 yr old I watch Marvel, DC, and Starwars and I don’t criticize it much. Unless it’s truly horrible of course but my love for all this stuff we grew up, well it outweighs negative Emotions/thoughts. I really do try to just enjoy this stuff we’ve grown to love. We all should just be thankful all of this is still here as we grew to be adults. Now we can share it with our kids, it’s really cool to think about honestly.
One thing that I noticed many years after seeing it the first time: This movie had the first example of a force ghost interacting physically with the real world. The vines move as Obi-Wan brushes past them to speak with Luke.
Plus, you HAVE to mention General Madine having the greatest plastered bowl cut in the history of cinema.
Finally, a star wars fact I never heard before. The ewok trap contained deer butt! Very nice.
I watched this 100 timea as a kid i never realised how amazing Jabba's eyes are until now.
I had to opportunity to meet David Prowse at the San Diego Comic Con in 1995 and get his autograph. I had heard about how touchy he was about the unmasking not being him, so I knew I wasn't even going to think about bringing it up. The guy in line in front of me had no such good sense. The question was maybe 1/2 way out of the guy's mouth when Prowse stopped signing, ripped the picture in half, and motioned for the guy to move aside.
Nice shoutout to The Weekly Planet, I’ve been listening to James and Mason for years. It’s an awesome podcast!
Paul just casually dropping a weekly planet reference confirming he's a weekly wackadoo! 👏
I like your clip from Empire of Dreams. A fantastic documentary.
I love these videos. Even after years of Star Wars researching these films, it’s rare for me to learn new Star Wars stuff. However, I’ve learned so much from these videos, and they are so entertaining. Great job!
Hard to believe Warrick was only 11 years old
I love this movie soo much. You had some bts stuff I hadn't heard before which I really appreciated.
Great video. I'm so happy you're one of those who admire and respect and appreciate GEORGE LUCAS, the CREATOR of Star Wars. It's truly sad and beyond me to see that some disrespect and belittle and try to discredit the man who gave so many of us the greatest cinematic experience (ever) with the best trilogy ever created. Fantastic video. Thanks you!!!
I'd like to thank you for this in-depth flashback to the OG Star Wars that I watched with my kids who were born in the 80s. Hell of a time!
Excellent video.
I just have to say that in forty years, with all the technological advancements made in the film industry, there has never been a space battle as epic, coherent, and awe inspiring as the one at the end of this film.
Lmao 4:55 the writer Lawrence Kasdan kinda worried me there with that quote “I felt someone had to go, someone had to die.” If I was in the room I would’ve immediately left. Also I’ve never heard of an actor wanting their character dead as passionately as Ford with Han Solo.
Harrison Ford was right. Han Solo should have died in Empire. He didn't want to be in any more star wars projects and it shows. His subsequent performances were tainted with his apathy and tbh, his side-mission and general inclusion in ROTJ did absolutely nothing to advance his character. He was wasted, Carrie Fisher was wasted (no pun intended), and the emphasis on the Ewoks was absolute rubbish. Search your feelings, you know this to be true 😂
I always heard Harrison Ford discussed it during Empire but wanted to die a "hero's death" in Jedi. His survival made me happy in Jedi, and I loved his mannerisms and a few of his line deliveries in this movie. I can see how he didn't seem as invested in the Han role, though, for Jedi.
I go with the Harry Potter notion. That in order for the trio to survive and the action and threat be serious, several of those around them have to be hurt (like George) or die. In that case it was Moody, Tonk's father, Dobby, Fred, Tonks, Lupin, Colin and we find out after the last book, Lavender. So could we imagine several of Lando, Chewbacca, Artoo, Threepio, Mon Mothma, and Admiral Akbar dying? Or do we go with Lucas's view that they all need to survive to sell toys?
When we saw this in the theaters I was on the outs with my Dad. This movie helped us come together, more as family, if you will. Great video!
Return of the Jedi can refer to both Anakin and Luke. From just the title and without todays hindsight, the audience would assume the return of the Jedi is Luke completing his training and becoming a Jedi thus returning the order into existence. Only after you watch it do you realize it also applies to the return of Anakin to his Jedi ways.
31:20
Such a brilliantly executed shot, how it pulls into the tunnel at speed.
I can only watch the 'de-specialized' versions now. Those were the ones I watched in the cinema, and felt that they shouldn't be tinkered with. I'm so glad that those guys went through all the effort to reproduce them.
This is definitively my favorite Star Wars movie and is very easily in my top 3. Luke definitely defines what a Jedi should look like, and shows what it means to be a true warrior. It perfects what the prophecy that was set for Anakin. I could seriously write a doctoral thesis on this film.
Wow Paul that was awesome, 1983 seems so long ago now.
Great video 👍🇬🇧
I'm truly grateful for your breakdowns and insight Paul. I wish I had more $$$ to give. You help me appreciate movies that I love and artists on a whole new level. It's a priceless experience. Thank you for all of your hard work!
Love these new older film breakdowns. Would love to see jurassic park as the next one.
My favourite scene is the "it is too late for me, son". And my favourite piece of music is when Luke lashes out at Vader after he threatens Leia.
Definitely the greatest trilogy of all time! Can Watch these still and not get bored of them. The ewoks weren't bad to me and yeah that plan was a little silly. Of course, as a kid I adored it beyond belief.
this one got me in the feels, thanks for all your vids
Dear Paul, you did it! You saved the best for last! You stuck The Landing! This breakdown, was extremely epic in wonderful. You're Anakin ghost rant was hilarious. A great mix of information that spanned decades. You brought back so many memories and dropped a lot of gyms in there.
Loving these movie breakdowns by you guys at the channel. Awesome content.
I remember seeing this in Ireland in 1983. I was 9 at the time. Read an article the same week I saw this stating that the next installment ('The Phantom Menace'), wouldn't be released until 1999. It's also interesting how all first six films were made three years apart.
In the words of Senator Palpatine: "A surprise to be sure, but a welcome one."
Haha thank you
I really enjoyed this breakdown as I grew up watching this on VHS countless times, usually at 5/6am before anyone else in the house woke up. It was years before I saw A New Hope or Empire! They were just never shown on terrestrial TV. Luckily I had a lot of Hope/Empire toys, thanks to a neighbour and then going to car boot sales as a kid.
This was pre-internet times so you can imagine my excitement when I was browsing the house of one of my dad's mates (don't recall the story but it was like a VHS horder's house, literally floor to ceiling, in the rooms and hallways) and spotting the two Ewok movies that I knew nothing about. I loved them!
I love this series! Great job. I watched this twice already
Sick, been excited for this, great job Paul👌🏻 when Ryan Aries grows up maybe he can be like you. Just kidding, not possible.
He can’t be saved or redeemed
@@heavyspoilers😂😂😂😂
Awesome breakdown....ROTJ was my very first American movie I saw in the theaters....my 7 or 8 year old mind back then was totally blown away. Can't believe this year is its 40th Anniversary. Another great video breakdown.🔥🤌
Seeing this in the imax last year truly sold me on it being my favorite of the original trilogy. The final lightsaber fight between Vader and Luke is peak cinema imo
Their final duel is Shakespearean!
THANKS for this, Paul!!!!
The impressive thing about "Heavy Spoilers" Star Wars videos, is that they bring a new light to such a heavily discussed, and celebrated brand. I mean, the original trilogy has been picked apart, and examined adnauseam for the past 46 years, so it's no small feat to bring a fresh, and entertaining approach to reviewing these iconic films.
LOVE the breakdowns. But please, PLEASE do Spaceballs!!!!!
Great series and coverage on the OT thank you! Love these video breakdowns and the depth you go into these films...keen to see the prequel trilogy broken down as well if you're up to it 👍👍
Thank you Paul.
This was the first movie I ever watched in a theater (i was 16) and had no idea that it was part of a trilogy 😂 but loved it cause 16 year old me fell in “love” with Luke😂❤❤❤
Finally had some time to catch up with your OT breakdowns. Loved every minute of them. Great job Paul. You really hit the mark and i felt why i fell in love and why i love star wars in the first place. It's a hit and miss situation rn 😂. However, star wars is always gonna have a special place in my heart. Thank you. Much love from Germany ❤
Completely forget to mention that the Empire of dreams documentary is on of my comfort films. So great to see some scenes from it here. 😊
Lol love the line: "We don't hafta play " fuck around and find out.. " just give me Han back.." lol
George's look to the camera at 15:48.....yeah baby!😜
Thank you so much much for breaking down the OG trilogy. Much more detailed than other breakdowns I’ve seen. So many details I didn’t know! Now please, please, please do episodes 1-3….. I know 1 sucks…..but come on….you gotta do it for the fandom!
I'm glad I'm not the only person who heard "That guy's wise"
I hope Paul and MT breakdown every single Star Wars movie! I would love to see a video on if Mace Windu is still alive.
I’ve followed this channel for years, have a few shirts, and it’s just the best. The last few months have been extremely great with the addition of MT too. Love seeing this channel thrive and get bigger. Some CZcamsrs ‘EV’ can have these huge egos. Paul isn’t like that, he’s a good dude I could picture having a pint with. So I’ll always support him and the channel.
Great job my friend!
I cracked up literally every time I heard “like poetry it rhymes” 😂😂 I’m such a kid. Well played heavy spoilers - as brilliant as always
When he said "you will hit the like button" at 16:17 and the like button lit up made me jump a little lmao
Well done. I especially love the self-depreciation
We shouldn’t disrespect ourselves, even in jest. Uplift yourself at all times. But I see what you’re saying 🫡
@JackTorrance333 respectfully, I use self-deprecation often, but it's important to believe none of what you say. Otherwise, I agree with you. It can be detrimental to your own emotional well-being.
Back to Return of the Jedi, I think that makes most people feel good.
@@Sci-Fi-Mike true. Cheers
These videos of older movies (but u know we’d love ) break downs are great!
I think you didn't mention it, but Oola's actress reprised her roll in the re-shoots for the 1997 re-release. :D She looked basically the same after 14 years.
The working title "Blue Harvest" ... thats epic!!
This remains my favorite of all the Star Wars movies. And that includes the prequels, the sequels and rogue One. Well I have enjoyed elements of those other movies, none have come close to being the absolute culmination of all my hopes and fears like this one did. I was a little girl when the first movie came out. I was just entering my teenage years when The story ended. And I still remember being that wide-eyed child on the edge of her seat not knowing if her heroes were going to live or die, succeed or fail. Would evil triumph as it did in the previous film or would good prevail. I absolutely loved how the last 40 minutes of the film flit between the three main conflicts. The underdogs on the moon and in space. The Battle of good versus evil with the emperor cackling on. It was sheer perfection.
Now I have appreciated some of the newer content more than others. I absolutely adored Star Wars Rebels because it made me feel like I was watching these movies. A ragtag group of underdogs who cared about each other like family and battled an evil empire to save the galaxy.
Others like other aspects of the newer content. And certainly the prequels were a dazzling display of Jedi skills as well as Droids. But the OT and return of the Jedi in particular will always remain my favorite I think.
I loved the original score at the end. Bad Lucus! Great review!
The attack on the second Death Star still holds up amazingly all these years later. Still hand down my favorite space battle from Star Wars to this day.
Paul!!!
I was 7 when I saw this in the theater. I used to have the Daily News (a newspaper from where I grew up in - Philadelphia Pennsylvania) it said Revenge of the Jedi. All my friends thought that I somehow made that up and apologized to me when the news of the original title was revealed. Great job breaking these 3 movies down. The original versions remind me of when I was a youngling 😂
Ey thank you, life was wild before the internet. I had a friend I was really close with during phantom menace and I was telling him palpatine was darth sidious and he wouldn’t have it. We grew apart and I never got to rub it in his face.
@heavyspoilers same, I saw Phantom Menace in 1999, my old bassist (that has, unfortunately, already passed from this world) and I saw it together and I said "That's The Emperor!!" to him...
The old days...
16:16 I will like the like button. Well played HS, well played.
"you will like the like button and he's dropped into the Pitt", Best segway ever. I don't fall for Jedi mind tricks but I'm gonna give you like just for how smooth that was. 😂
I will like the like button! Lol. Jedi mind trick. Good one.
George getting mad at Zeb Wells aka a writer of She-Hulk is so great to see. lol
My thoughts exactly, Vader
Great breakdown. Definitely some interesting things I hadn't thought of. I had seen in one interview with George Lucas that he had originally wanted there to be Wookies, but for whatever reason he couldn't so he "cut them in half and called them ewoks" never heard the bit about them being based on an actualy indigenous tribe with a similar name. Also I miss the Ewok song at the end.
Superb analysis of one of the best films of all time (with the exception of those damn Ewoks which were characters designed for the sale of toys). The film has it holes but the short comings are overcame by the completion of the series. Only wish that we had more adventures of Luke post ROTJ.
For some reason I wanted to hit the like button at around 16:15
This was an awesome video!
Great video Paul. Love your channel
Thank you 🙏
Great cover. My favorite film of all time , mainly because it was the conclusion of the greatest trilogy of all time. Great work guys.
Absolutely loved this series, made me love my favorite movies of all time even more....I cant believe they were gonna do jedi w/o the degobah scene.
This film was so important to me as a little boy growing up. Culturally speaking, even though it’s not the best film of the original trilogy it’s still so much fun and there’s so much to love about it. Also there’s a very cool thing you can buy if you look for it. Some brilliant people got together and made a “despecialised” version of the original trilogy. So a blu ray set with the films as close to as they were when first released without any of the bizarre additions George Lucas put in over the years. Cannot recommend enough.
For some odd reason, I felt strangely compelled to hit the Like button while you were talking about Luke's entrance to Jabba's Palace. Well done, as always.
