- Nelson Freire performs the "Piano Concerto no.2" by Frédéric Chopin, with the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France conducted by Mikko Franck. Excerpt from the concert recorded live on 26 April 2019 at the Philharmonie Paris.
The Piano Concerto no.2 was composed by Chopin during the winter of 1829-1830, six months before the Piano Concerto no.1, numbered in this way simply because it was published first. Written by a composer barely twenty years of age, these two works belong to Chopin's Polish period, his native country that he ultimately left in November 1830, moving to Vienna, then Munich, Stuttgart, and finally Paris.
The works are also evocative of Kalkbrenner, Hummel, and even Weber, though Ravel never hesitated to add: "In this music, the features are inspired". Chopin never claimed, through his Concerto in f minor or his Concerto in e minor, to have invented a new form. He used the traditional three-movement structure, fully highlighting the cantabile nature of the piano. The first movement opens with the orchestra, but the arrival of the soloist clearly reveals where lies the composer's heart and ideas, the orchestra merely showcasing the overflowing beauty of the solo melody: creativity and virtuosity here go hand in hand. The unique beauty of the work's slow movement garnered the admiration of both Liszt and Schumann.
A poignantly expressive work, it is a beautiful love song and a delicate confession from which the later-composed Nocturnes draw inspiration and evoke a similar atmosphere. As for the final movement, it uses rhythms and motifs from popular Polish melodies and crowns the works with sovereign jubilation. As colourfully described by C. Ruege when writing about Chopin's concertos, "the beauty of these works comes from the union of two worlds: that of the candle-lit Parisian salons and its ladies with seductive gowns and intoxicating perfumes, contrasted with the world of popular street dances, the smell of cut hay and the healtyh skin of young farmers".

Nelson a eu une lecture fantastique de Chopin. Extrêmement technique, moderne, sophistiqué et romantique.
Reposez en paix ! Vous étiez un très grand interprète. Un homme meurt quand on l'oublie, et grâce à ces nombreuses merveilles que vous avez laissées, vous ne mourrez jamais.
La sensibilité de Nelson Freire , ce touché de velours qui le fit comparer à un Guépard resteront à jamais au Panthéon de la musique. Ce concerto de jeunesse de Chopin , il le porte , à ses soixante quinze ans , avec une fraîcheur de jeune homme ! Un pianiste lumineux, sensible, pas conventionnel , loin du tapage mediatique...
Sa grande intégrité artistique nous manquera. Merci pour tous ces moments de joie reçus par vous , et accompagnez nous longtemps...

Le monde devient très ennuyeux, moins supportable chaque jour. Des personnes comme Nelson Freire ne devraient pas nous quitter si tôt.

L’Argentine a Martha Argerich et le Brésil, Nelson Freire. Deux géants du piano, deux grands amis de la France... Nelson Freire est sublime dans ce qui est, pour moi, la plus belle œuvre de Chopin : son second concerto pour piano. À 75 ans, Nelson Freire a gardé toute sa virtuosité d’antan mais son jeu est encore plus inspiré et pénétrant. Une merveille dont il faut remercier Radio France pour le cadeau qu’elle nous fait.

Merci à France musique de nous permettre d'entendre et de voir le merveilleux artiste qu'était Nelson Freire. Son décès le 1er novembre est d'une tristesse inguérissable. Quel touché, (jamais il ne tape sur le clavier) et une musicalité exceptionnelle dans ce deuxième concerto de Chopin, (en fait le premier dans sa date d'écriture). Une merveille!

Wunderschöne und elegante Aufführung dieses romantischen Konzerts mit anmutigem doch gut artikuliertem Klang des Soloklaviers und perfekt entsprechenden Tönen anderer Instrumente. Der intelligente Maestro dirigiert das ausgezeichnete Orchester im gut phrasierten Tempo und mit sorgfältig kontrollierter Dynamik. Obwohl der geniale Pianist ziemlich alt ist, klingt sein Instrument manchmal echt jugendlich. Alles ist wunderbar!
So sad to know that you’ve gone, Nelson Freire! Brazil is so proud of you. No words will be enough to ever express our gratitude. Martha Argerich and you make this world a beautiful melody among so much and sometimes unbearable noise. RIP!

Escucho a Freire y me emociono. La técnica pasa totalmente a segundo plano, y su musicalidad aflora llegando al alma.
deux autres très grands interprètes de Chopin et que j'avais été voir à l'Auditorium Maurice Ravel de Lyon, je veux cité Alexy Weissenberg, et Arthur Rubinstein, mais c'était une autre époque. Mais très belle interprétation au piano de Nelson Freire

Am I the only one who prefer this to Chopin's another piano concerto?
I am totally with you. I first time heard this concerto in Copenhagen with Arrau together with the Liszt E flath major concerto in 1967 . Unforgettable. The same year I heard a great recital in Copenhagen with a very young Nelson Freire playing the B minor sonatas by Chopin and Liszt .
you are not alone
At first, I liked the 1st concerto more, but then I went to a performance of the second one with Alexandre Kantorow on the piano and ever since then, I've started to slowly warm up to this piece. Now I like them about equally, but I find myself listening to the second more often, I feel like there is more to explore in the second (doesn't mean the first is bad in any way though, it's still one of my favourites)
