The Flesh-Eating Bacteria Spreading in Japan

- Japan is dealing with rising cases of a disease caused by a rare “flesh-eating bacteria” that can kill people within 48 hours. Health authorities have reported over 1,000 cases of streptococcal toxic shock syndrome (STSS) as of early June, higher than the record 941 cases reported for all of 2023. At the current rate of infection, experts fear the number of cases in Japan could reach 2,500 this year. For more on the disease, Alix Steel and Paul Sweeney speak to Amesh Adalja, senior scholar at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.

Here in Japan have heard absolutely nothing about this!
🤔 Maybe this is a precursor of what's too happen? As he said "predicted?"
Could it reach the uk
Thanks
Maybe because it's way too minimal cases like thousand only. Our population involves millions in number. Nothing much to worry. Just stay healthy. Eat fresh greens veg and more fresh fruits

my granpa just had his foot removed because of this and two of my moms friends had this too. If you get it youll have to have feet or limbs taken
I was going to Japan this summer. But I guess I’m not going :(
You dont have to worry buddy, no one in japan is talking about it. Compared to corona where everything shutdown im thinking this might be a very small outbreak or a hoax at this point.

It's a bacteria. Be vigilantly clean and you should be fine. Wash your hands, wear a mask etc and you'll probably be fine tbh.
From what I understand from living in Japan for 10 years is that there is no rule for a set temperature on water heaters in the home. It is recommended that water temperature be set at 40 degrees. Personally I think it's too low and not effective at killing viruses and bacteria especially on towels, bed sheets, linen etc. In my home country the water heaters are supposed to be set at 60 degrees. Perhaps this contributes to the problem?
You're right, 40C isn't close to adequate in order to neutralise bacteria. 65C and above is usually what's suggested.
Its interesting but probably been that way for a while - unlike some developed countries i never thought of Japan as having bacterial issues
I think you mean legionella. They can be in water pipes (biofilm) and water heaters and are thriving in temperatures 25 - 45 degrees.
@@BlanBonco I think in newer buildings it isn't too much of a problem but a lot of people still live in old buildings from over 40 years ago and the water quality from the tanks is certainly questionable 🤔
@@TheHummelpatthank you! It's nice to put a name to it 😉
Last year also Japan reported around 941 cases. This year the cases has surpassed with some numbers Hence, I don't know serious it is. I heard from news channels it has spread in Europe also - has doubt whether it's true or not
I thought it was just dejavu until I saw your comment. Yea they’ve reported this last year.
A new epidemic, huh
I know few years ago i saw in the news that a boy had it when he fell off his bike.. i'm just curious how it's spread. From food only or human-to human?
it can spread through wounds or any other thing that has come across the infected person, if your chef or whoever is serving you has that virus and it spreads to the food..... time to say the prayer, and that's what they only know yet.
out of 10 case, they don't know how 3 of them get the virus so ya they holding some info again
It's a strep bacteria which is actually pretty common.. im unsure which has been the source of this one thought and how it is spreading

Flesh eating bacteria was attacking diabetics in Naples Florida back in the early 2000s. I believe it was linked to a medication. I would like more details on patients other co-morbidities.

By ocean - Japan dumped radioactive waste water into ocean
nothing too much to be worried about, people don’t have antibodies to common viruses due to both the pandemic and people swaying away from vaccines, and therefore are getting infected with viruses, then this bacteria. you are much more likely to die in a car accident than to die from this bacteria. if you’re worried about it then just eat fruits and veggies and ask your general physician about anything abnormal. stay safe
So....any lab leak?
Any bio lab in japan?
welp, let's just hope for the better... I hope this won't be another pandemic 😭😭
Strep is also getting resistant
Why this news is not popular
Cuz it’s only in Japan
How contagious is it?
Streptococcal bacteria can spread through droplets when someone with the infection coughs or sneezes, or through shared food or drinks. You can also pick up the bacteria from a doorknob or other surface and transfer them to your nose, mouth or eyes.
This is quoted from Mayo clinic
Will it reach the uk
Will Penicillin work
@@dotaultimate6607 It should, but we should probably stay away from using it. It becomes less effective over time as we use it morem
More radioactive waste water!
Maybe because they are eating raw foods like fish etc.

Of course, that’s why it’s a concern

There's Other bacterial called Staph (antibiotic resistant strain) that is no joke
I don't hear any ways to prevent this? How do we our to protect ourselves.
The best way I truly believe is asking God for his protection. I believe nothing can happen unless it is the will of God that it does. If it does, we should trust that whatever the outcome, He will take care of us. We are His children. We are in His hands. ❤
God is one option medication is another
Practice good hygiene including a healthy living that goes from good food to basic things like, disinfecting anything like deep gashes or even mild ones.
I knew someone that suffered this infection many years ago.. he required so many skin grafts to his mid section that it looks so butchered.. however he was lucky to survive with his life and faculties intact.
His was the result of cutting himself on a tin can he had opened with a can opener, it cut him by accident, didn't think much of it at the time.

But this disease is curable right. They already had the cure aren't they?? So, its not a big problem. Just learn the symptoms, identify it soon as possible, then get treated intensively.
It is curable if I remember correctly as it’s just a very very very severe form of strep
No it's not.. "curable' it can be treated somewhat to a degree with anti biotics... but it's usually a very bad situation once the infection has spread into deep tissue.
Another remedy that's used is having to cut the infected tissue away, and obviously this is not ideal but there's nothing else left to do at some point.
should i be afraid
I had a family member come back from Japan that was covered in red splotches I think I got it but I'll just spread it instead because the clinic here couldn't treat it so I'm just going to continue spreading it, now I'm a carrier and it barely affects me now

Eating raw fish in sushi could be the cause.....
With climate change, fish meat has been altered.
Maybe??? !!
The UK has it too
I think its might be sushi which is a longshot or the populations weren’t socializing with the pandemic with people using mask and sanitizers were Japan is crowded but very clean and self conscious were the immune system is playing catch up

👍🏻
Then why was it reported in the UK a couple of years ago?
We have a reputation for overcooking food, not the other way round.
Besides, he explains in the report, it's a normal problem that occurs anyway, it's just 'catch-up' time after Covid pretty much separated everyone.
Didn't they link this to Strep at the start of the video?
They did.
So, this is known as Tonsillitis in the UK. I expect if you've had this at some point in your life (as I have), or have had it more recently, you 'may' be more at risk from this bacteria. But as Japan does a lot of mask-wearing at the best of times, let alone the worst, perhaps they don't have as much resilience against these types of infections, having not built up sufficient immunity by always exposing their systems to various types of nasal/throat infections.
However, the rest of the world has pretty much given the habit of mask-wearing the elbow, so we should be much safer in general.
Therefore, not a pandemic.
Nothing to do with food.
It's Darwinism in its true form, ensuring survival of the fittest and removing those with genetic weaknesses. Very sad for the victims and the families concerned, but should be a matter of short duration.
@Debbie-henri OK so how did it start? Where did it come from? That's the answer alot of us want to hear

Bacteria. Always bacteria.
You can pick it up in the soil or from a plant or at the seaside or from another organism that is infected some people have cut themselves of a rock and it got into the wound
I dont know when or how it started but that's how its spreading. In Ireland about 5 years ago I heard two dogs picked up the infection in The Wicklow Mountains I have not been to the Mountains since with my own dogs
