The Flesh-Eating Bacteria Spreading in Japan

  • Japan is dealing with rising cases of a disease caused by a rare “flesh-eating bacteria” that can kill people within 48 hours. Health authorities have reported over 1,000 cases of streptococcal toxic shock syndrome (STSS) as of early June, higher than the record 941 cases reported for all of 2023. At the current rate of infection, experts fear the number of cases in Japan could reach 2,500 this year. For more on the disease, Alix Steel and Paul Sweeney speak to Amesh Adalja, senior scholar at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.

    From what I understand from living in Japan for 10 years is that there is no rule for a set temperature on water heaters in the home. It is recommended that water temperature be set at 40 degrees. Personally I think it's too low and not effective at killing viruses and bacteria especially on towels, bed sheets, linen etc. In my home country the water heaters are supposed to be set at 60 degrees. Perhaps this contributes to the problem?

    • @89RealThe
      @89RealThe Před 2 měsíci +7

      You're right, 40C isn't close to adequate in order to neutralise bacteria. 65C and above is usually what's suggested.

      nothing too much to be worried about, people don’t have antibodies to common viruses due to both the pandemic and people swaying away from vaccines, and therefore are getting infected with viruses, then this bacteria. you are much more likely to die in a car accident than to die from this bacteria. if you’re worried about it then just eat fruits and veggies and ask your general physician about anything abnormal. stay safe

      Then why was it reported in the UK a couple of years ago?
      We have a reputation for overcooking food, not the other way round.
      Besides, he explains in the report, it's a normal problem that occurs anyway, it's just 'catch-up' time after Covid pretty much separated everyone.
      Didn't they link this to Strep at the start of the video?
      They did.
      So, this is known as Tonsillitis in the UK. I expect if you've had this at some point in your life (as I have), or have had it more recently, you 'may' be more at risk from this bacteria. But as Japan does a lot of mask-wearing at the best of times, let alone the worst, perhaps they don't have as much resilience against these types of infections, having not built up sufficient immunity by always exposing their systems to various types of nasal/throat infections.
      However, the rest of the world has pretty much given the habit of mask-wearing the elbow, so we should be much safer in general.
      Therefore, not a pandemic.
      Nothing to do with food.
      It's Darwinism in its true form, ensuring survival of the fittest and removing those with genetic weaknesses. Very sad for the victims and the families concerned, but should be a matter of short duration.

      Discounting a manufactured one out, I think its just a random incident. I mean, we had a global pandemic every now and then, seems like a recurring event every 8 years (heard it from somewhere). I will not be surprise if its come from south east asia but Japan is quite odd place for a global pandemic to start.
