I think she was still super charmed... and honestly, she knows how romantic Steven is, she has probably thought about the possibility of him proposing before she's ready before. Maybe was surprised at quite how early it happened, but like, of course he proposed at 16, he's Steven, he loves shmaltz.

Instead, after the initial surprise, she tried to get him to see how early it was for them to take that step, how much time they had to figure things out, and how she wanted to find herself and be her own person first. Instead of being scared off or flat out rejecting him, she basically told him that she wasn't ready for that _yet._ A not now. She was even willing to forego her studying to stay with him and talk through it. Of course, with the explanation in Growing Pains, I don't think anything there's she could say or do outside of an enthusiastic "YES" that would enable him to react positively. But it's still nice to see her handle the situation so thoughtfully. It's obvious she cares about him, she just isn't ready for that yet.
Honestly, back when the audio leak of that scene came out, I already knew Steven wouldn't be angry at Connie (Or at least, not try to) or even blame her. Simply because in the main serie, unlike with the gems, Steven has never allowed himself to do so toward her. I predicted he would tell Connie to leave so he could let out his "Pink outburst" without her being around (Thought I did had my doubts... so glad to see I was right 😁)
I can't stop thinking about how "I'd rather be me with you" is the complete opposite of Escapism's "I'd rather be free" (A song sang by stevonnie, by the way)

Kevin Perez thigh I believe your theory correct, I think it is the beginning of stress eating which can be very harmful to the body, also leading to the point that he is very emotionally unstable, as you see in growing pains, Steven has food all around his floor and seems to have been eating a lot since the events of together forever, therefore the start of a unhealthy coping strategy.

Here's the way I explain this. He wants to relax and finaly be himself, but he is so used of things being a certain way to the point of not knowing how to get out. And of course, staying in what you know is the easy route. That's why it's so complicated and messy in Steven's mind

This episode seriously hit me hard. One of my closest friends had a huge crush on me for the longest time, and even after I made it clear I didn’t want anything he still confessed and asked me to go out with him. Complete with a homemade necklace of my name in a heart. Seeing Steven do the same thing just made me feel even worse for him because turning someone down can be the worst pain you and the other person could feel. We haven’t spoke since the incident.
At first I was a bit skeptical when we saw the teaser images that ev5was saying Steven was going to propose to Connie. I was like "no no no, Steven knows they are WAY to young to get married" *I stand corrected*
I understand how steven feels about connie saying "not now". I was told that by someone I liked, and eventually, they got together with someone else. It was rough at the time, but you have to move on.
Steven and Connie are adorable, but I'm glad they portrayed unhealthy attachment the way they did. Underneath self-hatrid, Steven has always been in love with her, but now that he hates himself he's using her as an escape _from_ himself. It's a good lesson about self-esteem..and they got together in the final episode anyway so im happy :)
The explosion reminds me of when Smokey first formed also, do you think Garnet was in the wrong? It is implied that she knew Steven was going to propose to Connie and the outcome, yet Ruby and Sapphire put the idea in his head.
Well, to be fair to Garnet, she does state near the end of the episode that there wasn’t a timeline she saw where Steven *didn’t* propose, so she probably arranged things enough to try and help him as much as she could.

I was having a seizure of emotion the whole time I was watching this, because I have this bullshit thing where whatever someone is feeling, even if they’re not real, I feel it too. Growing pains hurt more, like I flinched and could barely watch at some part just because it was too much.

So... how did this affect Connie? I mean yes, its great to see how Steven felt, but what about Connie? How is she dealing with having to reject a proposal? How is coping with the emotional labour of soothing Steven?
Man, I feel bad for Connie. She was expecting a much different question and I know that if Steven just asked her to be his girlfriend she would've totally said yes. She didn't even reject him, she just reasonably said not right now. And now she thinks she's the reason for why Steven's body is freaking out, and she kind of is.
Garnet was trying to show that even when apart you can still be in love with someone and respect their independence. BUT _some_ people took this as Garnet, Ruby, and Sapphire being cruel.
I really like that this episode wasn't Connie breaking up with and leaving Steven but instead asking him to also let her be herself and her own person. Cause I was real worried it was just going to be the end of them being a couple.

What's interesting to me is that throughout the whole episode Steven is so sure that he will have a future with Connie, but in actuality he is insecure about where he stands. If anyone is secure in their relationship it's Connie. That "Not Now" shows that they have so much time to build up to that point and she's in no rush to worry about marriage right now. She knows that they will be together and is ok with what they are right now. Once Steven finds out who he is without Connie, I know he will love who he is even more when they are alone together.
I needed to pause this ep several times it was HARD to watch but it was necessary I have seen too many YT comments saying that Connie should be there to fix Steven with is TOXIC she is there to help him out by taking him to seek medical help and inform his Guardian when he is too sick to do so himself with is the best move. I really love how they explain Steven's mental state and how Connie reacted. The saddest thing is that EVERYONE wants to be there for Steven but he just cannot accept outside help to be too focused on being the one who helps I both have seen that in loved ones and lived trough version of this myself so I both appreciated what the show does and feel real bad watching it. Great video keep up the good work
It’s weird how Connie gave him chances to express how Steven is feeling but keeps pushing her away because he doesn’t want her to him weak or broken. Also he doesn’t want to hear the hard truth that he needs some help from a professional. AND I SWEAR TO GOD REBECCA I LOVE YOU AND EVERYTHING BUT IF STEVEN AND CONNIE DON’T WORK OUT IMMA BE DEPRESSED CRYING ON THE FLOOR.
Connie was probably ready to go the next level and "officially" become Steven's girlfriend, but the proposal was at least one bridge too far. Steven shouldn't have even mixed his heartfelt effort with broaching the subject of becoming Stevonnie, as that in itself would be an exclusive several-year commitment. At least with Growing Pains Connie is aware that Steven is not acting normally, and that he's under enormous stress that is affecting his very health.
I had a complete breakdown after this episode and the correlations it has to my current situations. I'm not ready to lose Steven universe as a pinnacle of my life, just like how Steven feels about his friends
I just have a thought that maybe steven rushed connie back to her house after the rejection wasn't just because he was embarrassed, but because he knew he was gonna set off his powers soon and he didn't want to hurt her

This episode seriously hit me hard. One of my closest friends had a huge crush on me for the longest time, and even after I made it clear I didn’t want anything he still confessed and asked me to go out with him. Complete with a homemade necklace of my name in a heart. Seeing Steven do the same thing just made me feel even worse for him because turning someone down can be the worst pain you and the other person could feel. We haven’t spoke since the incident.
At first I was a bit skeptical when we saw the teaser images that ev5was saying Steven was going to propose to Connie. I was like "no no no, Steven knows they are WAY to young to get married"

Steven and Connie are adorable, but I'm glad they portrayed unhealthy attachment the way they did. Underneath self-hatrid, Steven has always been in love with her, but now that he hates himself he's using her as an escape _from_ himself. It's a good lesson about self-esteem..and they got together in the final episode anyway so im happy :)
The explosion reminds me of when Smokey first formed also, do you think Garnet was in the wrong? It is implied that she knew Steven was going to propose to Connie and the outcome, yet Ruby and Sapphire put the idea in his head.
Well, to be fair to Garnet, she does state near the end of the episode that there wasn’t a timeline she saw where Steven *didn’t* propose, so she probably arranged things enough to try and help him as much as she could.

@@LadyYamiofLight If Garnet and her components weren't as useless as they've been since getting back from The Zoo, she/Sapphire should have said that although she can't see Steven NOT proposing, she can't see with any accuracy the success of that proposal, or how badly it would affect the relationship between Steven and Connie is if wasn't accepted, because as a Gem she's not qualified to judge the emotions of humans (as shown in The Answer, Sapphire can't even predict the consequences of strong emotions among Gems).
A big question for me is why Steven would ask Ruby or Sapphire, and not his own father. Does he mistrust Greg because he's still in love with a "criminal"?

For some reason, along with Garnet, the show seems to have sidelined Greg as well since the Zoo arc, although unlike the former they've not made him look like a dolt.

I was having a seizure of emotion the whole time I was watching this, because I have this bullshit thing where whatever someone is feeling, even if they’re not real, I feel it too. Growing pains hurt more, like I flinched and could barely watch at some part just because it was too much.

Man, I feel bad for Connie. She was expecting a much different question and I know that if Steven just asked her to be his girlfriend she would've totally said yes. She didn't even reject him, she just reasonably said not right now. And now she thinks she's the reason for why Steven's body is freaking out, and she kind of is.
Garnet was trying to show that even when apart you can still be in love with someone and respect their independence.
BUT _some_ people took this as Garnet, Ruby, and Sapphire being cruel.
I really like that this episode wasn't Connie breaking up with and leaving Steven but instead asking him to also let her be herself and her own person. Cause I was real worried it was just going to be the end of them being a couple.

What's interesting to me is that throughout the whole episode Steven is so sure that he will have a future with Connie, but in actuality he is insecure about where he stands. If anyone is secure in their relationship it's Connie. That "Not Now" shows that they have so much time to build up to that point and she's in no rush to worry about marriage right now. She knows that they will be together and is ok with what they are right now. Once Steven finds out who he is without Connie, I know he will love who he is even more when they are alone together.

I needed to pause this ep several times it was HARD to watch but it was necessary I have seen too many YT comments saying that Connie should be there to fix Steven with is TOXIC she is there to help him out by taking him to seek medical help and inform his Guardian when he is too sick to do so himself with is the best move. I really love how they explain Steven's mental state and how Connie reacted. The saddest thing is that EVERYONE wants to be there for Steven but he just cannot accept outside help to be too focused on being the one who helps I both have seen that in loved ones and lived trough version of this myself so I both appreciated what the show does and feel real bad watching it. Great video keep up the good work
It’s weird how Connie gave him chances to express how Steven is feeling but keeps pushing her away because he doesn’t want her to him weak or broken. Also he doesn’t want to hear the hard truth that he needs some help from a professional. AND I SWEAR TO GOD REBECCA I LOVE YOU AND EVERYTHING BUT IF STEVEN AND CONNIE DON’T WORK OUT IMMA BE DEPRESSED CRYING ON THE FLOOR.

Connie was probably ready to go the next level and "officially" become Steven's girlfriend, but the proposal was at least one bridge too far. Steven shouldn't have even mixed his heartfelt effort with broaching the subject of becoming Stevonnie, as that in itself would be an exclusive several-year commitment.
At least with Growing Pains Connie is aware that Steven is not acting normally, and that he's under enormous stress that is affecting his very health.

It is pretty clear that his (toxic) dependence on Cony and his surroundings has explanations, yet it is also a remainder of how he is not used to dealing with "normal human stuff".
