In today's guitar lesson we learn how to play "Friend of the Devil" by Grateful Dead. This classic early Dead tune, which gets us strumming in a basic bluegrass style pattern, features a descending bass line throughout the verse. This memorable part serves as the song's main hook and is a great technique builder for basic bluegrass rhythm. After covering the hook, we look at all of the lead riffs on the intro before going through all three sections of the song. Finally, I discuss how to go about soloing over the form.

Hey all, thanks for tuning in, hope you enjoy learning this classic Dead tune, happy picking!
Best Freind of the Devil lesson on CZcams. Period. I've watched em all or at least among the 10 or so I've watched before this. This one truly captures the feel and harmony like none other. 👏
[edit 1 yr. later] really worth slowing down the intro to take in all the subtleties.
The David Letterman performance mentioned is bittersweet for me. It's so beautiful but i also feel like Jerry is struggling.
That’s so great to hear UberJam-Sam thank you very much!
agree 100%
agree 100%
Look forward to trying this out!
The sequence from 7:14 is pure gold for the intro
WowZa!!! Such a great arrangement and the guitar is sweet. I love to see these Martin SM's front and center and man o man you made that D just sing!
Playing the rhythm and lead at the same time? Impressive!
best lesson tbh,,,sound just perfect, gonna spend next onth probably learning this completely
So glad to hear it, thanks!
Brilliant advice on how to play this classic
Yay! The good ol' Grateful Dead. Grate arrangement and your picking is very impressive. I can't wait to get started. Half of the challenge is going to be "unlearning" my crappy version I learned in the parking lot of Autzen stadium, Eugene, Oregon. 1993.
Thanks, I always enjoy your lessons.
Outstanding. Can’t imagine a better lesson on this song.
Thank you so much! Friend of mine and have been working on this for a while. He is playing banjo to it. Appreciate you expediting my learning curve on the guitar. It’s starting to sound pretty cool 😊.
Hey man! You’re awesome! Thank you! ❤
Wow, that intro was mind blowing
I watch a lot of guitar lessons on YT and very rarely say this but what a really great lesson!!!😊
Thanks so much for the kind words! Glad you enjoyed it :)
Really nice lesson. In the into walk down, it seems like maybe an open G chord fits rather than a G sus type thing? I can hear it really wants to resolve on and the sus leaves it hang? Maybe it can go either way
by far the best lesson for this song on YT but dude you gotta do another video on throwing in the bass notes under those intro riffs! I just can't tell exactly what you're doing there
Thank you very much!
Solo @ 15:40 👍
🎶👌
i hate that literally everyone that plays this song and tries to teach it on youtube plays the studio version.
I mention the live version on Letterman in my intro
