    Hello everyone. Now that the AWE Expansion has been released we have a host of new datapoints to go through. Before getting into the bigger things, I want to touch base upon the question that has been in the minds of Remedy fans for a decade. That is, What has been happening with Alan during his Decade in the Dark?
    Trapped in the Dark Place, most of what has befallen Alan Wake is a complete Mystery to us. Using the clues in AWE, I will attempt to answer that question and even try to figure out what Legacy he left behind as a result of his time there.

      I don't think he'll die, he's one of Remedy's iconic characters. I can't find a good reason for it and it'll ruin the story if he just dies like that after all this building up. And Sam Lake never ruined a story so far..

    If people are confused, the artbook says that Jesses story is still her own. Alan is limited in what he can write, he can push events though. He bascially pushed the Hiss to take over the FBC, so Jesse would become the hero Alan needs.

      Also the QR code in the Remastered version confirms this as well that Alan simply borrowed upon stuff he learned about real life events to use as inspiration. Also it makes it easier to change reality if you are writing about something that already happened. Less rules being broken that way.

      It was actually found out that Alan literally receives visions and hints of events that have happened/or will happen from other world/s to help serve as inspiration for his recent writings to escape the Dark Place. So in essence, Alan's more technically like a seer who gets to choose what scenarios to write down instead of outright creating new things on the go as I first mistakenly believed.

  • @QuestionDeca
    @QuestionDeca Před 3 lety +120

    The end of "Writing the Manuscript" suggests that the Hiss, Jesse, and perhaps the Federal Bureau of Control itself, may of been created in one of his manuscripts, a prequel to the current plan. He notes a specific type of Poetry used in creation of the Hiss Chant (and sites many of the words and phrases found within said chant). This also could be reflected in Dylan's Dreams, past drafts of the manuscript dropped in favour of the current (Mr. Door?).
    He needs Polaris to guide him out (the guiding star), to create Polaris he needed someone else for it to guide, Jesse and Dylan Faden, or just Jesse Dylan Faden...
    The Two Thomas Zanes, the poet and the filmmaker, or are both one and the same but different aspects?
    Edit: A continuing thought, for Polaris to guide him he needs a destination, and this may explain why Jesse Dylan Faden became Jesse Faden and Dylan Faden, to ensure that Polaris can guide him to Alice, Polaris must first be able to guide Jesse both to Dylan, and her "true?" self.

      The only flaw I see with this is that the FBC, Ordinary, and the Prime Candidate program all happened before 2010, and we know his time moves linear because of AW. So unless he can rewrite the past, this wouldn't work. And if he could rewrite the past, why couldn't he rewrite his arrival to Bright Falls?

    • @QuestionDeca
      @QuestionDeca Před 3 lety +15

      DemonicRobots Like with any form of Time Travel, you’ve got to close the loop.Wake wrote about Zane writing about Wake, a closed loop of recursive events that must happen for the loop to exist. Wake can’t write his arrival out for meta, physical, and metaphysical reasons: First, it’s the kind of shortcut that lead to Taken Barbara Yeager. Second, it’d make for a boring story, and the Dark Place doesn’t bring travel-logs to life, only “fiction”, good fiction at that. Third, for his words to have the power to physically change the world, he’d need to physically be near an opening, or within, the Dark Place.

    Alan Wake is one of the most beautifully created characters in story telling. His courage and endurance through his tragic journey is most respectable.
    I wonder if the Thomas Zane we saw behind the spiral door is more than just a remnant. There's a recording by Dr. Hartman saying that after Alan has disappeared, people in Bright Falls started seeing Zane again. He's been trapped in the dark place even before Alan and maybe he is trying to escape just like him. But why is he a filmmaker now and the poet is just his latest creation ? And why did his voice change ? James McCaffrey is still with Remedy as he did Trench.

    • @irishsoldier5929
      @irishsoldier5929 Před 3 lety +4

      Indeed. Only a few people including Jesse remember Tom the poet. I don't know why, but when Jesse's therapist said that she found a filmmaker who moved from Europe in the 60s and whose name is Thomas Zane, I remembered that Blessed Pictures did exist and operate in 1968 and maybe even before. And there's a file in the sector about a group called The "Blessed" Organization saying that they are labeled "Paracriminals" who have taken interest in creating and abusing altered items. Cauldron Lake is a perfect place to create altered items given that you can influence the works of art near it. Maybe this Blessed Organization is the unknown third party you mentioned, who contacted Dr. Hartman who owns a clinic overlooking the lake with artists inside. There are quite a few documents and recordings about them in the DLC echoing with the name of Chester Bless. I think he's becoming a more important element in the story.

    My main question after AWE is this: we know Alan is writing the events of AWE entirely, does this mean he created the FBC as a whole, and the entirety of control is his story? Maybe this is his way of creating an organization that would gather people (Jessie) powerful enough to combat the dark place and help him escape. Or did the FBC already exist and he just utilized it to help himself. I don’t think the second is likely because he couldn’t have known of its existence prior to getting trapped in the dark place. I think control is one of his manuscripts.

    • @sal4731
      @sal4731 Před 3 lety +30

      I think the FBC existed even before Alan wake because Sarah breakers dad Frank Breaker was member of the FBC, and in the Alan wake game Sarah asks Barry to contact him and give him the code word ‘Night springs’ a code indication telling that’s there’s a AWE going on at bright falls. According to a case file in control FBC agents arrived 2 days after the events of Alan wake but the event was over. So the FBC already existed. I think Alan only wrote to use it for his escape and only wrote the events of AWE dlc.

      Salman Khan valid point. How did Alan learn of its existence though? And if he knew of it maybe he didn’t create it entirely but in the night spring manuscripts you discover throughout AWE written by Allen, the story is exactly what happened when trench and darling went through the slide projector. Maybe he didn’t create the FBC but he might have created Jessie and the events that take place in control in order to allow her to become powerful and help him eventually.

      @GamingUniversityUoG  Před 3 lety +18

      American nightmare really helps with these questions. It is revealed that Alan uses dreams and radio signals to transfer information to and from the prime reality. So he received information through tv sets and radios as well as people's dreams. While we only see him doing this to keep tabs on Alice and Barry, it is possible he was looking for inspiration to help him wrote a story to escape. If we go by this thought train, he could have learned about the FBC through these means and adapted them to assist in his situation.
      Honestly it is something they will likely clarify at a later time.

      Gaming University thank you for filling the gaps! Love your channel sm btw! I’m curious what you think about my second question from above. As you read the Night Springs manuscripts written by Allen throughout AWE, the story they tell is exactly what happens with trench and darling as they both go through the slide projector before control even starts. We also hear Alan talk about ordinary in some of the hotline, though I can’t remember exactly what he says. As I was playing it though it seemed to me that it was suggesting that Alan was actually writing the events that take place throughout the entire game of control. Like he writes about Polaris, Dylan, and about the hiss, he basically wrote darling and trench going through the slide projector, and he is the narrator telling Jessie’s story throughout AWE. Was he narrating Jessie throughout the base game and foundation as well (we just didn’t see it in the hotline because we hadn’t peered through the spiral door yet) meaning he created Jessie? What do you think?

But maybe initiated the Hiss crisis in order to allow Jesse to be built up as a person/character/warrior. Then once she was ready, begin the story of AWE. But that's just my hypothesis. But one of his Hotline calls has him saying basically that he needed to "trim the fat" of the story and not control so much. Imply things and let the characters figure it out from there. In this sense he may have been the instigator of the adventure, the Herald if you will, but every detail doesn't seen to be controlled by him.

    So the original Zane was a poet who put on a diving suit to enter the lake and alter reality to erase his books so they stopped giving the darkness power. However people still remember him, and only as a writer. In American Nightmare there are movie posters for a film by Tom Zane of a man in a diving suit. In control there is a document mentioning Zane is sometimes referred to as a writer and sometimes as a filmmaker, and the Zane Wake talks to in the DLC is just a filmmaker. So what if Wake has created an second Zane?

    • @GamingUniversityUoG
      @GamingUniversityUoG  Před rokem +3

      We already know that Alan created a second Zane. I talk about this more in the 'This House of Dreams' video. Essentially, the Zane we see in Alan Qake is NOT the original Poet. It is an entity called the Bright Presence that assumes the form of the Diver. Just like the Dark Presence appears as Barbara Jagger.
      At some point, I believe Alan essentially created a new version of Zane that is a filmmaker. One intended to assist with a new project. A Stage Production called, "The Cult." This also isn't the original Zanr.

    Great vid! Love seeing Control content so in depth. I didn't see it on here, so I'll add it for anyone looking but it's also implied Alan created the Hiss and their invasion was just another part of his plan.
    In the hotline calls, you hear Alan writing the chant the Hiss use. You can also find several TV/Movie scripts in the Investigations sector from Alan where a scientist is trying to stop his crazed boss from opening a door to another world, clearly meant to be Darling and Trench. The manuscripts end with the boss opening the door and letting an evil entity through. It at least explains where the Hiss came from and why they weren't around during the events in Ordinary.
    Also worth noting that Alan mainly refers to Jesse simply as "Faden" in his ramblings, maybe another point for Dylan and Jesse being the same person? Or at least more evidence that Jesse or Dylan were meant to be the next director, like how the board referred to Jesse as "Jesse/Dylan" in the Foundation.

    That was very insightful, great video! I have a proposal though regarding the first half of the video where you discuss Alan Wake's decade long isolation, I think time doesn't pass like one would expect in The Dark Place, we could see how Alan has barely aged at all, plus the fact that his memory also doesn't work as one would expect because as you said in the end by definition he can't know the ending to the stories he wrote so he has to keep forgetting them, I think these previous points could help explain how he's able to mentally endure a decade in such a place.
    An alternative explanation is maybe he isn't fully conscious, maybe the Darkness is 'shrouding his mind' like it did in the first game, and it prefers to keep him like that, maybe feeding off of the times it can crawl out of The Dark Place and into 'reality' due to the AWEs potentially caused by the stories he writes as you brought up (great catch by the way).

Its indeed well documented: these chemicals that are released so if you, for example, dream that you play football, you dont start kicking the air while sleeping, so while you suffer from sleep paralysis, the chemicals are still active so you cant move and your brain its still semi dreaming so dreamlike hallucinations are common! I think you are exactly right about the trial and error and unintended consequences. Even in what we are assuming to be the "successful" attempt that involves Jesse and the FBC, we can see that either Wake is willing to accept some collateral damage, or that he has no other choice in order to keep the Dark Presence contained.
    We can see this since he wrote for his wife to visit the FBC, which is what set Not-Hartman off and caused the violent deaths of so many Investigations Sector FBC agents and the shuttering of the department completely. There's also the Wake Writes a Beginning Hotline, which suggests even more collateral damage (although its unclear whether Wake CREATED or simply MODIFIED the Hiss in this case.)

    I assume Jesse is going to show up in Alan Wake 2 but I don't expect her to get a massive amount of screen time. She could either play a prominent role in the final "episode" of the game or just show up during the ending, along with the FBC for the "cleanup." And there's also probably going to be some Control 2 foreshadowing.
    And if Remedy ever manages to get back the publishing rights to Quantum Break, Control 2 would be the perfect opportunity to tease/foreshadow Quantum Break 2.
    Would be neat if the FBC hired Alan at the end of AW2. Not as an active agent but more as a consultant. Would it even be possible for him to return to his regular, mundane life after all he's been through?

    The Dark Prescence manifest itself in the physical realm via Hiss.

I wouldn't like to commit to any theories at this point as there are still so many options on the table. Perhaps the clue was in alans hotline about make them do the work, they're obsessed with the mystery I believe the writers are one step ahead of the readers

      I frankly don't think Alan wrote all of control. Just pushed over a few dominoes so to speak. But I agree that one of Alan's hotlines was very interesting in how he didn't explicitly say anything in his story, just set up the pieces and let the characters knock them over. In some cases, his words felt like the Remedy authors talling to us, the fans. They simply, give us enough info to guess. And our theories and belief end up shaping the story moving forward. Our crafted urban legends make it real. Granted this was intended for Alan talking about the FBC but it feels a little meta too.

I’m just constantly itching for more lore on The Former & The Board. In my first couple of hours into the game last year I was already addicted to Control, but the second that giant one-eyed-boi popped out of the darkness I instantly knew that I needed to know more about it & PRAYED it had something to do with the main storyline. You have any personal theories as to what The Former’s actual end goal might be? Or if he’s possibly a character that Remedy fans were already introduced to in the past that is now just in a different form? I’ve also seen theories that he could be Loki.

  • @DemonicRobots

    One thing that I wanted to point out is something I noticed in Alan Wake. Every single objective for missions is written as Jesse doing something. As in, "Jesse goes to the research center to seek out Dr. Darling's office." And things like that. I thought it was just the objectives for AWE but then I looked back and even checked the oldest patch of the game, the very first release. All of them are written like a story. What if Alan was the one that actually guided Jesse? Or at the very least helped set things in motion with his story. We know Polaris survived and it isn't sure how but, but if Alan wrote that Polaris would live so Jesse could defeat The Hiss and then, subsequently, save him, that might've been all of his doing. We know he has constraints himself as to what he can right, but Jesse and the multiple instances of O.o.P's and The Hiss would allow him much more freedom in his writing. This could be how he orchestrates his escape. By setting up Jesse as the Director of the FBC. Hell, Dr. Darling almost sounds like an Alan Wake character. Someone who is brilliant, charismatic, eccentric, and more. Not to mention, and this could be just a coincidence, but they are the same actor so it could be theorized that Alan modeled Darling after himself. What if Alan brought the hiss or wrote for Trench to bring in the Hiss because he wanted it to fight The Dark Place and allow his escape? I mean, we know the Hiss has power over these entities like Hedron and The Board, very powerful beings. Why wouldn't the Hiss be able to defeat The Dark Place too?

    i thought the finale of the AWE dlc made it pretty clear alan wake had been writing night springs episodes during his time in the lake. + the bureau took over producing episodes of night springs as a way to manipulate society. + we also find the 3 pages of his first night springs pilot episode, which ARE the main plot of control(a director and a scientist going into another dimension where the director is taken over (kills himself? i can't remember) and the scientist goes mad. ie, Trench and Darling). +There is a thing (can't remember if it was collectible or just text of final hotline cutscene thing) where he talks about "springs" repeatedly. something like he created the springs. and springs turn into rivers which turn into lakes. At first I was like "that's it huh? not a big climax." But then it struck me this was a not so subtle puzzle pay off that alan's attempts to escape were all night springs episodes, which the bureau produced, and were likely tied to the rise in AWEs. which is why the DLC was called AWE.

    Another great video! It's fantastically depressing what Alan has gone through this whole entire time (especially with the excellent choice of music, made me feel bad lol). But some people on the subreddit have discovered, that for some reason Ordinary, Wisconsin, has now been changed to Ordinary, Maine to plenty of the files now, perhaps after AWE released. Apparently, Quantum Break's version of Ordinary was in Maine, not Wisconsin. Could this be Alan trying to connect these two worlds now, making everything factually correct so they can connect and coexist? It's just strange why they would change it now. Also, Samantha Wells was even said to be in Maine in the wiki too. I don't know how I missed this, but these were two different Ordinary's, and now they're one. Thoughts in this? Quantum Break world starting to get connected?
    Also, this new Zane character makes sense of being a previous failed art, like Casey. What kind of sucks is that Alan doesn't remember, and possibly even changed the real Zane into something he wasn't, and effecting our perception of him now. And with more people thinking he's a filmmaker... The more he becomes real as the filmmaker. Notice that Jesse in AWE doesn't argue with the fact Zane is a filmmaker even though she found a poem by him.

    • @GamingUniversityUoG

      From what we gather, Ordinary being in Wisconsin was an error on the devs part. If you check the Ordinary AWE documents now they have it labelled as Ordinary, maine when before the docs say Wisconsin. So our theory is they fixed it when AWE came out.
      Well Quantum Break was connected in some way. One of the Quantum Ripples ended up causing a power outage in Ordinary in 2016, leading to an increase in crime. But we don't know why Will fixing the equation for the Machine ended up causing that.
      Yeah I found it interesting that the story re-wrote Jesse's memory right there.

      Gaming University Yes please because your original video centers around the theory Charles Bless might be an entity similar to Ahti. It was posted well before AWE’s arrival and doesn’t talk about the implications presented by Paracriminals and Paracriminal Organizations
      Hell prior to AWE the assumption was only select individuals are even know about Objects of Power but now we know there is an organization out there actively making these things and they have so far managed to avoid most of the FBCs attempts to pin them down

      Separate from these Para-Criminal organizations there is also David Wolff to keep an eye on. He was an investment trader who got into black market sales of altered items such as the Wolff Globe. Some of this info was out there for us before AWE.

    What if Quantum Break is actually one of these "Failed Drafts" of Return?
    If the events of Control was Alan setting Jeese up to become the "Hero" that he needed to save him. What if Quantum Break was an attempt to do the same? With Jack being the equivalent to Jesse for that attempt.

      There is some evidence to support that this may be the case. There is so much Alan wale stuff leaking through during QB such as the return trailer, the white board, his books making an appearance and even the Monarch staff playing the Alan wake video game.

      @@GamingUniversityUoG also the inconsistency with Ordinary.
      If control is to be believed, Ordinary should be abandoned by the time Quantum Break Occurs, but yet it has a blackout in due to the time manipulation of Jack in a period that should be after the Ordinary AWE

    Could you clarify how Jesse ensured that Alan's story would come true this time? I had the impression that aside from taking care of Hartman (I assume the way Alan wrote it) she merely observed Alan through the spiral door. How is that different from say his attempt during American Nightmare?

      In AN Alan mentions that in order to change reality you have to nudge the world to march the story. Just a few things will due. Such as having the music playing in the boom box or having the light focused on a poster. This caused the satellite to fall from the sky into the oil derricks or the projector turning on.
      It is possible all Jesse had to do to nudge the world to match the page is kill Hartman.

      @Gaming University Right, I thought you implied that this would finally be the attempt that would break Alan free because of Jesse's involvement, but I guess we won't really know for sure then until a couple of years from now (although you did put up a good argument for that in an earlier video with an "outsider" being required to assist).
      In any case excellent content as always! Exciting times ahead for the RCU.

      I'd love to see a bunch of his failed attempts. Random people experiencing odd things because of it.

    I heard that Alan Wake 2 is in the works rn.
