This is the pinnacle - Perry & Dean, the two finest Italian-American singers ever to step before a microphone - suave, cool, casual, charming, understated, and impeccable in voice, image, and style. Their cultural impact was enormous. They stamped the 1950s and 60s as the high point in American musical culture.
WALRU11: I know it's 8 years since your comment, but you hit the nail right on the head. This is the best synopsis of their talent that I've ever read or heard. Well put!!!
@@dinoz9932It's Italian - American. The first word indicates heritage, the second nationality. The other way around would mean they were citizens of Italy.
These are two of the most relaxed singers you'll ever see. And the best. To bad we don't have any singers like this anymore. Oh, to be able to go back in time. These were the days.
Fast forward to 2022 and what you wrote is even more true ... and no autotune, no lip syncing, pleasant accompanying music, just actual, honest to God real talent!
I'm practically in tears. This was real entertainment for the entire family. I was just a little girl, but I recall Saturday nights, sitting with my mom and dad, and watching these great performers. It was funny, heartwarming, and so easy to listen to. The world was a better place.
I still think Dean Martin was the most handsome man of many many generations if not of all times to me. Wow. His face and voice is just mesmerizing. I just love these two.
Every single time I watch this clip I get chills. Dean Martin and Perry Como singing a duet of Return to me is heavenly. Each man had a beautiful singing voice and style. Both of them were men and both of them were Italian men. IMO Italian men are the very best singers. God bless you Dean and Perry. Rest in peace.
1silverbay Pure talent, yes -but also the experience that only comes from years on the road learning their craft by performing in clubs around America to all kinds of audiences before they found fame. These men really 'paid their dues' and earned all the accolades that came their way, unlike many of today's acts who think that appearing once on a TV 'talent' show makes them a star, when in reality if you put them in front of a real big band of genuine musicians instead of a computerised backing track, they would be totally lost.
That is for sure. Dino what a happy guy and Perry he was truly a gentlemen and a family man. I got to go to his show and meet him twice in my life, I am so happy I did. I just loved Perry, we never use to miss his show.
I agree. Perry Como was my sister's absolute favorite, and Dean was mine...as well as Frank...and later (since I was a teenager in the 1960s) The Beatles. The Beatles were a different breed of course but as teenagers we definitely were affected by all the hysteria that accompanied them!
Donielle Stenson I know, he never seemed to take anything , least of all himself, very seriously😄. Jeannie said once in an interview that he had his own unique way of looking at the world - and that he and Frank were like a couple of naughty schoolboys when they got together!!
Both families immigrated from Abruzzi, Italy. Their villages were about 70 miles apart. Perry was godfather to Dean’s son Ricki . When Dean was a teen he bootlegged liquor toCanonsburg from Ohio and he was a pretty good boxer in his youth!
I feel like this represents a lost era. There are many talented artists out there today, but it's hard to see two of them singing together in such a casual, relaxed way, with such camaraderie.
Can you imagine driving with the top down in your convertible on a star lit night with your best gal by your side listening to this little song? Ahhh, such memories.
I belong to the Bee Gees generation but since my Dad (may he rest in peace) used to sing this song , I "recorded" all the lyrics of it in my memory box. I adore this song!
Donna Watkins Well for younger people brought up on modern technology, it could be that they didn’t like the quality of the film itself. It is rather dark, but considering the age of the recording I think we have to be grateful that it has survived at all - and it does show that Deans wonderfully contagious smile could light up the darkest corner!!😄
Dean's version of this is magic, but always a pleasure hearing these classy singers harmonize on it. Perry was the anti-Rat Packer, but loved and respected all the more for it more than 10 years since his passing. Can we get some of these classic Como shows on DVD -- even the many times he hosted Hollywood Palace?
some times when I watch these old videos I wish I could still watch their weekly show and then I realize..that it is gone, and time has passed by. But that we never forget how much they entertained us and blessed us with their talent
