The Battle for Hill 3234 (Russian: Бой у высоты 3234) was a successful defensive battle fought by the 345th Independent Guards Airborne Regiment, Soviet Airborne Troops, in Afghanistan against a force of some 250 Mujahideen rebels and several hundred more Pakistani regular troops in early January 1988. Two of the soldiers killed, Vyacheslav Alexandrovich Alexandrov and Andrey Alexandrovich Melnikov, were posthumously awarded the Gold Star of the Hero of the Soviet Union. All of the paratroopers in this battle were given the Order of the Red Banner and Order of the Red Star en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_for_Hill_3234

The movie itself filmed good, but that's not what really happened. In fact, if only they're not related it to something that happened for real, if they didn't lied, if they called it 8th or 11th company/platoon whatever, people could love it. But no one likes lies, so a lot of people in Russia hate this movie and the man who made it. The true story was so much different, man like they say in the song 39 airborne troops held that piece of mountain, only 6 of them was actually killed, 28 where wounded, some of them got wounded badly. In the end of the day soviets run out of ammunition, some where fighting face to face. There were 12 attack attempts in just 12 hours from different sides, and look how that's symbolic it was. 12 more paratroopers came to help and saved the day. They brought deamn ammunition right to the top of the mountain, walked and climbed under heavy fire. Mujahedeen were taking heavy casualties because of the soviet artillery and in this point understood that the battle is lost. Mujahedeen decided to retreat, they took all the casualties and left the place.
    In fact:
Soviet soldiers had radio station and all the time corrected the artillery fire, they were ready to turn the artillery fire on themselves if there will be no other option.
They were not left alone. After some time reinforcements arrived. Most of the airborne survived this battle. So this whole movie is a lie, and a pathetic try to make "like in Hollywood movie"...
It could've been a good movie, if they just didn't lied about everything, or not related this to the real story...
Probably i missed something, but generally that's it.

You miss two details: NSV "Utes" heavy mg, what was serious pain in the asses of attackers long time, before it was finally supressed and disabled, and another company sended to help with triple (IIRC) amount of munitions for them and 9'th company, and arrived in the last hours of the battle. They was carry alot of damn ammo by foot in the mountains, in the darkness.

I have to ask as a civilian. As a veteran who was deployed and seen combat, do you end up having respect for soldiers of different nationalities even if they are ones that you consider to be an enemy? I ask because as conservative as some soldiers are, they never really speak ill of the Red Army despite the fact that they could have ended the world in a war against the States?
