While I agree with the professor on the necessity for citizenship driven politics. I think he should make it clear that he wants the identity questions to be resolved by private non profit entities like rather than by the state.

Your argument is misleading because it is predicated on the wrong premise. Somalia and South Sudan failed precisely because they didn’t have a federal system in which all ethnic tribes are treated equally. They failed because each ethnic tribe vied for supremacy over the others in order to subjugate and impose their will on them.Take India, for instance, they have a Federal System in which there are 29 States mostly each state having its own language and in some cases its own alphabet. India as you might know is credited for being the largest democracy in the world. Each state in India runs its own political affairs independent of the federal government. In rare cases one state can even have a different political system from the federal government. Your premise that a system based on ethnicity and language leads to failure is thus not correct. I believe that your argument is that the current Ethiopian Federal System is not suitable for us. I have no problem with that as you are entitled to your opinion. But please do not lead your audience astray by using wrong premise that leads to wrong conclusions.
