  • Video 1 in the series "A History of the Navy in 100 Objects" presented by the United States Naval Academy.
Often when telling a story, its best to start at the beginning. In our case, although the United States Navy didn't begin with John Paul Jones, he is nevertheless considered the Father of the American Navy. Born in England, he cut his teeth as a sailor in merchant fleets, before coming to the United States. When war broke out, he joined the fight on the side of the upstart colonies, and won fame for his daring raid on English soil and his victories over British ships. After the war, he accepted a position as an admiral in the Russian navy. After a short time, he returned to Paris in poor health, and died shortly after in 1792. In the tumultuous days of the French Revolution, Jones' grave was lost and it wasn't until 1905 that it was rediscovered. After discovery, and with great ceremony, his remains were transported across the Atlantic. After several years were finally interred in the crypt underneath the iconic Naval Academy Chapel, where they remain today. This is the story of Jones in life, and in death.

He is my 7th great uncle, our family is JPJ closest living relatives, we did intense research into our family tree and were shocked back in the 60s that some of our family heirlooms were monogrammed with his stamp.

Most biographies state that he left the slave trade in disgust and publicly denounced it as immoral. The sailor who was flogged died days or a week later. Don't know all the info about the probable mutineer. Whether the combat actions were minor is a matter of opinion. Fact is, he showed great tenacity, never gave up, and inspired a number of future generations.

He is a strange character to choose as a national hero. He served for several years on slave ships, he beat to death a sailor under his command, he stabbed another allegedly because he mutinied, had to get out of the country fast before the law caught up with him. He play a role in a couple of minor actions round the British Isles and signed up with the Russians once the new USA had finished with him. An itinerant mercenary at best.

Yeah those 2 "lil skirmishes" caused the english citizens to panic knowing they could be attacked,it cause insurance on all merchant ships to double overnight and England had to recall some of its na vy from the war in america to defend its own shores. Oh..and The US couldnt afford a navy so JPP took the job with russia with Thomas Jefferson's blessing. And finally...every country was in the slave trade..even your ancestors...its was a sad way to pay the bills, but thats how it was then.

@@texasblessed8270 Yes, every one of the great stately houses in England were built at least partly with profits from slavery. Very little of this dirty money worked its way down to the peasants though, and that's my ancestry. JPJ finally had to leave Russia in a hurry after admitting sexual activity with a girl barely in her teens. Not the first person to choose as a hero.

@@texasblessed8270 You are also right about Britain having to keep some of the navy close to home for defence, but that was nothing new. During your war of independence the Spanish and French navies were a real threat after they declared war on us ( again ! ).
