ACES EFI Killshot Pt: 4 Installation Prep

  • Part 4 in the installation of the ACES EFI Killshot. I wanted to show you why I went with a pairing of the ACES Killshot and the FiTech Mini. I completely recommend everyone choose a manufacturer and stick with their products but I really didn't have much of a choice given my budget this time around. I had the total intent of going the ACES route but as you'll see I didn't have a good location where I could mount an inline fuel pump. I wish I could have gone with a brand new tank and in-tank pump, but that was vetoed by Committee (wife). Perhaps at a later time. Anyway... this shows you some of my thought processes given the space I have available. I imagine others will have the same concerns. After doing this prep, I will most likely be putting the ECU in the engine compartment... which I realize negates one of THE BEST reasons why I chose to go with ACES (heat=bad on ECUs) but then again, ACES has a rep for great customer service and so far I truly believe it.

    I used the Holley muscle car in tank fuel pump module in my nova with my killshot. Works great, and returnless.

      Yeah like altsound1 said earlier, I probably should have done that. My concern was that it wouldn't fit on the top of the tank. I only have like 2 inches between the tank and the trunk floor on the camaro. I didn't want to risk it and end up with something I couldn't use or a giant hole in my tank that leaked like a sieve. I was playing it safe I guess. If the mini breaks down I might go that way or maybe replace the entire tank with a new style with built in pump. I guess that's for the future.

    An inline pump doesn't have to be below the lowest point of your tank, it only has to be below the level of your fuel. Unless you are constantly running your fuel level on "E" the pump being 2 or 3 inches above the bottom of the tank wont be a problem.

      Hmmm. Did I mis-speak in vid? I wasn't intending on putting it below the tank but it would have had to have been right in front. That would have required bracketry that dangles right in front of the tank but would be above the bottom level of the tank by what would be the width of the pump itself. Which would have been 2-3 inches. However, I don't like the idea of hanging a pump there, and I don't want to make some cheesy bracketry out of angle iron. It has struck me, since then, that I could have made a simple bracket and used the tank straps to mount it there. Oh well. Still though, from what I understand, the ACES pump is a push type pump not a pull type. That means that it would struggle if above the fuel level since it would depend on gravity to feed it. This is why soooo many people complain about these types of pumps not lasting long. Also, the manual says it should be within 2 feet of the tank. My Camaro has nothing within 10 inches of the tank that I can mount to, unless I want screws sticking into my truck and that's because my Hotchkiss aftermarket suspension kit took up all the real estate that the pump would require in that area. Honestly, I wish they had offered the new in tank (returnless) pump modules when I bought the parts to start my upgrade. I would have preferred using that over a FiTech Mini. Maybe if the FiTech burns out. I'm hoping ACES has a giveaway of the new returnless in-tank pump. I'd love to get one of those and would probably make a video about what it would take to install it and modify my current system from the FiTech Control Center (Mini) to the new ACES Pump.
