    Hey bud, out of curiosity, would this work at all if you also had no check valve in your breather going to a catch can. At the same time as I want more fuel pressure, I also wanna eliminate as much of the pressure build-up from the down stroke and the vacuum build-up from the up stroke as possible. I wanna say it should work if using the factory fitting size for the breather bc it should still build some pressure and vacuum bc it not like I’m drilling a 1in hole lol but curious if by removing the check valve if that’ll make the pump pretty much useless. I guess I should explain my goals with my build. For the specific build I’m not going for max power, rather I’m going for max fuel efficiency so I’m throwing everything I’ve learned over the decades of building cars and reducing as many parasitic loses as possible. I should also explain that I’m not using oem rings, rather I’m using total seal gapless rings to increase sealing potential even though the crankcase will have minor pressure/vacuum buildup during the strokes compared to stock. Im explaining that part bc with oem rings, reducing that crankcase pressure/vacuum can result in less than stellar ring sealing causing a power/efficiency drop rather than increase so wanted to get that part out of the way. Long story short, it’s a generator build lol. Thank you for your time bud.

    the oem black vacuum line that goes into the cover and connects to the pulse line went bad on mine a while back. I replaced it with a piece of clear 1/4" hose. fits in the cover super snug. no leaks. I noticed the other day when I started it gas going from the pump down the line into the cover. does that mean the pump is bad?

    G'day mate ,smithy from Aussie, just a silly question, I brought a cub cadet ,20hp kohler motor on it, the is in a very bad way . When your winding the motor you get a small amount of fuel in the filter, how much pulse is required to deliver fuel to the carbie?
    Thanks for the video, very informative,
    Thanks smithy

    • @TheGrayGoatGarage
      @TheGrayGoatGarage  Před 3 lety

      Hi Smithy,
      G'day Mate! LOL
      The pump only will put out a little pressure when pulling the engine over. The pulse is increased with engine rpms. Once the engine is running, it does not take much of a pulse to get things pumping.
      When the piston comes up in the cylinder, the crankcase pressure is negative, or a vacuum, and the piston going down in the cylinder creates positive pressure in the crankcase. This is what creates the pulse.
      We can also get the pulse from the intake manifold. The pressure in the intake beyond the throttle blade goes positive and negative with the opening/and closing of the valve.
      If the pump is not working properly, it may be due to the gasoline. We have 10% ethanol in our gas here and that tends to make the diaphragm harden in these pumps and the fuel supply is diminished...and time for either a rebuild or a new pump.
      Some of the Kohler engines used a mechanical pump and they also suffer from today's fuel.
      If you have specific questions, please let me know and I will do my best to help you
      Eric...the Gray Goat

    • @dustysrandom5079
      @dustysrandom5079 Před 3 lety +1

      No, that’s the breather/check valve. Only lets air out, not in so it will not pulse. You’d need to drill a hole in the top of the valve cover and use the barb as GG did in the video. Or if you removed the governor internally, you can use the governor arm hole, drill and tap that for the barb.

But what i'm trying to figure out is where exactly to mount the fuel pump itself ? The only available stud in the area the pump is resting is the top left blowerhousing stud and i tried to put 1 end of the fuel pump mounting hole onto that stud but the stud isn't long enough to put a nut on it to hold it in place. • @TheGrayGoatGarage
      @TheGrayGoatGarage  Před 5 lety +2

      Hi Cal,
      the GX340 is a solid engine and a great platform to build on...as well as the Pred 420. The biggest thing we need to pay attention to is the crankshaft on the GX340. Some of the power washers used a tapered crank to mount the pump. There are no clutches for the tapered shafts!
      The best thing you can do to any of these engines is open up the intake and exhaust, change the carb jets, and advance the timing. The EPA has these engines choked down and these simple upgrades will allow the engine to perform much better!
      What are you wanting to do? better than stock? Performance build? Let me know.
      Check that crank! If it is a straight 1" crank then we can plan this out for you

    • @TheGrayGoatGarage
      @TheGrayGoatGarage  Před 4 lety

      Hi Curtis,
      That engine would have come with what we call a "pumper" style carburetor. It has a diaphragm in the carb that pulls the fuel from the tank. Chances are if the carb is in good shape, a pulse pump would not be needed. Those diaphragms get hard with the ethanol in today's fuel and will not pump properly. You may need to rebuild the carb.

      @TheGrayGoatGarage  Před 4 lety

      Yes, you can use a pulse pump with a stock carb. If the pulse is too strong it can over fill the bowl. You can use an inline valve like this to diminish the pulse www.ombwarehouse.com/inline-fuel-shutoff-valve-fits-briggs-stratton-698183.html. A pump can cause more issues than it solves. If you can gravity feed the carb, a pump is not needed. You can test to see if you have too strong of pulse by disconnecting or clamping the line. Start the engine and slowly release the clamp. Try that before trying the inline valve

      Check for cracks in your fuel lines. If air is there, it has to come from somewhere. If your fuel is coming from the bottom of the tank, that means you have air coming in through a fuel line crack, dried hose on a connection that is sucking air, or a gasket leak on the pump.

    I am installing a pulse fuel pump on a small engine and one thing I didn't hear you say in the video was if you could connect your pulse line for the fuel pump to the crank case breather tube on the engine? Can that be done on a stock engine that is non-ohv? I appreciate any help I can get. Thanks.

    • @TheGrayGoatGarage
      @TheGrayGoatGarage  Před 5 lety +1

      Hi Edward,
      The stock breather on small engines typically have a valve inside that would not allow the pulse to get to the pump. For the OHV engines, we put the pulse port below that mechanism in the valve cover. What engine do you have? Please let me know and I will help you find the right spot

      @@TheGrayGoatGarage Thank you for the fast reply and help. I have a 2005 Briggs 6.5hp vertical shaft engine. The model number of the engine is: 123k12-0134-e1 Currently I have drilled a hole in the stock intake manifold and added an npt fitting with a line connected from it to the pulse on the fuel pump. Hi Edward,
      the intake manifold, in my opinion, is the best place to pulse a pump. Nice strong pulse and clean from oil. On that vertical shaft flathead, the only other place I can think of is the oil fill tube...but I am not crazy about that idea!
      Let's try and stay with the intake manifold. How far away is the pump from the fitting on the manifold? Shorter is better! Where on the intake did you drill the hole? Do you have the inlet and outlet on the pump correct? What pump are you using?
      The only other option I can see in the schematic is to drill and tap the block. You would need to disassemble the engine for that to work! Pics! Send them if you can

    • @TheGrayGoatGarage
      @TheGrayGoatGarage  Před 4 lety +1

      Hi Pete,
      The stock valve covers have an internal valve to relieve the pressure with air going out only. That is why when we drill a pulse port we need to be below the inner structure of the valve cover to get a good pulse. We get a good positive and negative pressure through the line this way

      I prefer to take the pulse from the intake manifold on a Briggs 5. Most intake manifolds will have a pulse port. If you are making your own manifold, you can drill and tap the top of the side over for a pulse line. It is cleaner if you can pulse from the intake manifold... no oil in the line!

    At what point do you start needing a fuel pump? After gov removal, intake, exhaust, and jets? Or after some internal work? That one still looked like a factory carb.
    Edit - after a little research its seems its not a good idea to use a fuel pump with a factory carb designed for gravity feed.

    • @TheGrayGoatGarage
      @TheGrayGoatGarage  Před 5 lety +2

      Hello,
      In most cases a fuel pump is not needed. If you are running extremely high rpms and you feel like the bowl is getting sucked dry, then a fuel pump is needed. Methanol applications need a fuel pump as it takes twice the fuel as a gas setup. If you are using a stock type carb, chances are you don't need one.
      Please let me know if you have additional questions

    • @TheGrayGoatGarage
      @TheGrayGoatGarage  Před 5 lety +2

      Hi Frank,
      Not every engine needs a fuel pump! If you feel like the fuel bowl is emptying out at higher rpm's, then yes. You may get enough fuel by gravity feed alone. Try it without and see what happens. I am not a fan of fixing problems that don't exist! LOL Keep it simple!
