I know, right? I'd be first to preorder that album....just him and a piano. I think his musical genius really shines even brighter in these live performances - this, the last Mahogany session, Hide and Seek, Hallelujah, even the Snarky Puppy collab. I love his full stuff too, of course, but these feel so intimate and personal. Knowing how quickly he works, too, you'd have the album in an afternoon or a week at most.

      @jas_bataille Před 5 lety +175

His voice was always at that level, simply, he matured to show it more in it's raw form rather than harmonizing it all the time. He has done a few sessions like this one some dating from 2 or 3 years ago if I remember correctly, each and every one is particularly poignant.
Having said that, just a comment as a vocalist... his voice is actually so on pitch, and the harmonics he produce are so perfect, that he sometimes sounds "flat" as in lacking dept to his voice. All of his harmonics rings perfectly true, it's almost lacking something, his technique is SO perfect that it sounds unnatural.
He had the best vocal grades of the Royal College of Music in London. Of. All. Time.
His voice is his GREATEST gift - he's starting to catch up on understanding this, that's all ;)

    Where waterfall riches flow down
    Why do they cry?
    No one knows why
In every mouth there's a word of forgiveness
That melts all the ice to the ground
    Why do you sigh?
    I don't know why
Why does the sky fall down
    Like pouring rain?
    To let it flow again
    Gonna make you feel alright
Take your dreams, keep them out of sight
    Wanna make you come alive
Close your eyes, keep you warm at night
So come a little closer to me
So many things I want you to see
    My darling
In every laugh is the sorrow
Of all of the tears that you've held for so long
    Would you make me cry?
    Oh, let me run dry
In every tear are the eyes of a father
And mother that brought you to see
    Sing lullaby
As you say goodnight, night, night (Goodnight)
    Why do the stars look down (1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 and 10)
And feel no shame (Counting up the droplets of the tears falling from the sky)
When they are all the same?
    Gonna set your mind alight
Keep you close to me and hold you tight
    Wanna keep you burning bright
Take your words, shine them like a light
So come a little closer to me (Come a little closer)
So many things I want you to see (Many think I want you to see)

That's a tradition now every time I go for a new song of Jacob. I honestly can't figure out how to make a proper line of ideas to somehow retrieve what I have just been given. I don't think the best poet could. Now I'm not eating the cereal anymore, I'm just crying in a way that I don't understand, but that liberates parts of myself I'm used to ignore, even though I know they're the essential and yet most unknown and mysterious pieces of my being. The way he plays and the musical decisions he makes are so perfect, like the last verse where the lyrics are ‘in every soul there’s a need to grow older’. Do you write music for sentimental reasons, or is it more for your showcase of your musical capabilities? Is it a mixture of both?
Thanks, and keep up the amazing work! :)

    • @jacobcollier
      @jacobcollier Před 5 lety +788

Yo, Casey! Great question. To be honest, I'm not sure I'd say either would be true for me. To create for 'sentimental' reasons would mean to focus on the past - past emotions, past thoughts. I think music can only really exist in the present - though you can learn so much from your past. Certainly music is a language capable of expressing some profound emotional worlds... I've always loved to learn it and experiment with it for that reason. Having always adored the left-brain and right-brain approach to music-making in equal measure throughout my musical life, I know the feeling of exaggerating an aspect of a musical idea because I find it exciting from a 'knowledge' base... It's an important feeling to have to grow and push yourself, and every musician needs a phase of their life when they do that hungry gathering of information. But when that 'thinking' takes over a songwriting process, the real creativity stops altogether, I've found. If something I am creating moves me, then I know I'm doing it right. That's my bottom line, I guess. I wouldn't describe myself as much of a technician on any instrument - but I don't think you need to be to tell good stories - you just need to get the 'gestures' right. I've spent longer on focussing on what all that language means, and why things can feel certain ways, than trying to master a technique on an instrument. It's hard to focus on that real creativity that if you're trying to please everybody, and next to impossible if you're trying to impress everybody - the real magic comes from a different place, for me. I'm following my goosebumps :-)

Mahogany...a colour (U.K.) a color (USA)... Jaco Collier...a genius (world) . I remember reading a comment a few months ago on Acebook where a colleague whom I greatly respect expressed the opinion that Jacob was highly talented, but that he didn't have what it took to be a genius. I greeted this well-meant opinion with respect and total silence. I myself need no convincing, so I don't need to convince anyone else. But what I hear in his incredible masterpieces is so magic that I must say that, if Jacob Collier's not a genius, then I surely don't know who is, and we would have to seriously redefine the whole meaning of "genius", in a sick world that is seriously in need of them, as genius paired with such humanity is a precious offering to the Universe, and seems also, after the death of Lyle Mays, to name but one, to be seriously lacking. "Success" arrives to so many with so much less, and to even more with so little if anything at all. . I'd say that Jacob Collier is not a genius. He's an awesome fucking genius

    [Verse 1]
In every sea there’s a mouth of a river
    Where waterfall riches flow down
    Why do they cry?
    No one knows why
In every mouth there’s a word of forgiveness
That melts all the ice to the ground
    Why do you sigh?
    I don’t know why
    [Chorus]
Why does the sky fall down
    Like pouring rain?
    To let it flow again
    Gonna make you feel alright
Take your dreams, keep them out of sight
    Wanna make you come alive
Close your eyes, keep you warm at night
So come a little closer to me
So many things I want you to see
    My darling
    [Verse 3]
In every laugh is the sorrow
Of all of the tears that you’ve held for so long
    Would you make me cry?
    Oh, let me run dry
In every tear are the eyes of a father
And mother that brought you to see
    Sing lullaby
As you say goodnight, night, night (goodnight)
    [Chorus]
Why do the stars look down
    And feel no shame
When they are all the same?
    Gonna set your mind alight
Keep you close to me and hold you tight
    Wanna keep you burning bright
Take your words, shine them like a light
So come a little closer to me
So many things I want you to see (Many things I want you to see)
    My darling
    [Outro]
In every soul is the need to grow older
To speed up the passing of time
    I don’t know why
    But it makes me cry
