  • I literally didn't know I was a teacher until I walked into the building on Monday morning. Days one and two consisted of many mental breakdowns and full fledge panic attacks, but I think I've got the hang of everything (lol). Can't wait to teach these sweet sweet second grade babies how to read and write.

    I was in your position my first year of teaching 4 years ago. I actually had just graduated with my BA and no credential yet and no experience. I took over a classroom in Feb. and I can feel and relate to every single thing you felt in this video. Take a deep breath, prioritize, and only do the absolute necessities. I wish someone would have told me these things because I worked myself to death for the whole year and it catches up to you. You will figure it out. Breathe!

    This was me last school year. I got hired at a school after Christmas break. My best advice would be to not compare yourself or your classroom to anyone else, get to know your students , and remember to have fun. Also, try places like Dollar tree (teacher section) and big lots for classroom basics and organization.

    Hang in there. I have been teaching for 27 years. Try to find what went well during the day. Try not to focus on what did not go well. Remember to think like a second grader so that you can make connections with your students. I hope that more veteran teachers will watch this to offer you advice. Best wishes to you.

    i cannot believe you have to supply alllll the stuff for your room! don’t get me wrong, i know teachers supply a lot but a rug? i can’t believe they’re not supplying that for you! my heart hurts for you because it’s already stressful starting mid year but then also having to dish out so much money adds to it. you will do amazing and seem like you’re thinking the right way about what’s important and what’s not and you’re getting so much accomplished! good luck with your first year!!

    I graduated in December of 2018 and began working at a school the following month. I was hired as a science and social studies teacher ending up teaching science and a random computer class. My "classroom" was previously used as a storage room so I spent the whole day cleaning the room and just getting it set up for it to look like an actual classroom. It was super over whelming, it was confusing, scary, and I didn't feel prepared or ready. It was hard but the good part of coming in mid year is that you get your feet wet before going into summer and then you have all of summer to fully prep and correct mistakes that might have been made in your first semester. You got this girl

The free resources from TPT as well as Dollar Tree and Target Dollar Spot helped me get started (along with other teachers dropping off stuff). • @hannahfrasier8600
      @hannahfrasier8600 Před 4 lety +1

      A lot of times, first year teachers will be given items and resources from other teachers. They may be retiring or just decluttering. This way, newbie teachers can have a good head start on their classroom. :) But buying most everything out of pocket is usually expected.

    • @hannahfrasier8600
      @hannahfrasier8600 Před 4 lety +3

      Nicolas Gonzalez well, I can really only speak as a new secondary teacher, so as for 6-12, I’m sure it’s happened. As long as teachers have materials, routines, procedures, that kind of stuff set in place; it’s totally possible to teach in a naked classroom. Think of college classrooms. However, elementary is different in the fact that younger students need that fun atmosphere with lots of visuals around to serve as reminders and learning prompts. So I’m not sure if a school would let an elementary teacher start with completely nothing. I feel bad for her not being able to set up in the way she wants and was given so little time. Usually decorating is something that teachers have thought about ahead of time but those big pieces like furniture and a rug are bought last minuteish. Teachers definitely decorate through out the year though! Rooms won’t be perfect a lot of the time on the first day.

    • @nicogs97
      @nicogs97 Před 4 lety +2

      @@hannahfrasier8600 That's very true. It's interesting how you pointed out the fact that college classrooms mostly have nothing in terms of decorations. But, elementary classrooms need to provide visuals and rules for students. It's an interesting concept though, thinking about an elementary classroom with nothing but chairs and a whiteboard. I wonder what the students response would be to enter into their classroom the first day of school and seeing nothing but chairs and a bare room. How would the dynamics change?
      But, I also think about long time ago, back in the day, when our parents or grandparents, went to school and classrooms didn't have all these decorations, and seats, and rugs, and posters, etc.... Everyone seems to turn out alright, so is it actually necessary?

      Nicolas Gonzalez, most of us teachers walk into an empty classroom. I started my first year teaching years ago on August 25th (that was back when school started later). My classroom was pretty much empty other than a broken pair of scissors and one single pack of paper that had already been opened. I was fresh out of college with no income yet. I borrowed $300 from my daddy to go buy stuff to set up my classroom. Since teachers get paid once a month on a one month delay, I did not get a paycheck until Oct.1st. I brought home $1250 for the month, and took $300 off the top to repay my daddy. Teacher life is tough.

    Are you seriously holding your camera/phone to film while driving? You realise how dangerous that is, right? Please don’t do that again, I understand you were excited but that’s awful.

    For a teacher you’re not very resourceful.... you could have gotten so much stuff for $60 somewhere else other than lakeshore
