NSE Tropicals Tour-Part 1 - Ep 060

  • Last week Enid Offolter, founder of NSE Tropicals showed us how she propagates her Philodendrons, but a visit to her space wouldn't have been complete without a proper tour! There was just entirely too much to see (overwhelming might I say!) that I had to break the tour up across multiple episodes. This one is of her first (and oldest) greenhouse, which was still recovering after Hurricane Irma.
For those of you wondering, Enid offers a variety of hard-to-find plants on her website across a variety of families and genera, so you'll have to check it out here: bit.ly/2IdtVPA

Not anymore, they’re in tissue culture- so they’re now being mass produced by the thousands, if not millions now. The caveat that supply is being controlled to maintain high prices, a bit like how diamonds are not particularly rare, but their supply is controlled so demand exceeds the artificially restricted supply, so they can charge more for them

It likely flowers in a coil to prevent other pollinators and things from getting inside. The ghost orchid is like this in a way. The ghost orchid has a very long flower so that only the one type of moth can pollinate it. These coils probably serve a similar purpose.

OMG!!!! In this video you mentioned something that made me just sit up and fall out of my chair. You mentioned growth sugars and I have that on my piper plant and then you mentioned that you had a piper plant with the same thing. Mystery solved! Our water here is very hard water, and I mean extreme amounts of salts. So I transport water in a 35 gallon tank in my truck from down the street. I was worried that even though I was doing that, the salts were still collecting along the stems of the piper plant. I don't have to worry any longer. Wonderful videos! Keeping us educated.

This is great, I live in NYC / Brooklyn. The relative humidity in the winter goes down to 3 / 5%. I have collected Ficus species that start growing aerial roots during the humid summer months, but after October it gets dry as the desert. Many Aroids need humidity. The common Monstera deliciosa seems to do well no matter of what. But those variegated Anthuriums died. I grew some bird's nest Anthurium type from seeds I found but sold it as it grew too wide. That one did very well. For me plants and orchids from Mexico (even Yucatan) seem to do best. Plants from Ecuador etc are a lot harder as probably they require constant high humidity and cool nights, while the heat in my apartment in the winter can reach 85 / 90 F coupled with low humidity it is a no no. But I just swithced to LED grow light fixtures and seaweed extract and I noticed crazy root growth. But this is great. I love heat and humidity more than centralized heat and AC.

There are so many rare plants being constantly lost from purposely burning I virgin jungles and secondary jungles in Brazil and Kalimantan in Borneo, I wish more explorers would collect them and grow them to preserve plants that would be lost forever. Plants cannot run away from fires, unlike animals which can mostly escape. There are also selfish gardeners who prefer to keep rare plants to themselves and when rare plants die for whatever reason, no one else has them to continue their existence.
