Have a Communications and LE background. Have dealt with mostly adults with various mental illnesses and some kids with autism. Considering becoming a Behavioral technician and your teaching me what methods are used and the importance of documentation, thanks for your information!

Thank you for this video! I graduated last year with my BA in psychology, but had no job experience so instead I had to work at target. Fast forward to today, I aced my phone interview for a Behavior Technician, and hopefully will get called for the in person interview. This video honestly is starting to help me brush up on my old skills. Thank you!

Applied Behavior Analysis (2nd Edition) by John O. Cooper is considered the best for understanding the concepts. Ethics for Behavior Analysts, 3rd Edition by Jon Bailey is great for the ethics portion. Good luck!

Applied behavior analysis uses evidence-based techniques to guide decisions. A good journal to look at for the more recent research is JABA. Let me know if you have any other questions.

The prevalence of autism is increasing. See stats by CDC: used to be 1 in 150 kids in the year 2000 it’s now approximately 1 in 44 kids. This was his comment 3 years ago. I’m sure the demand has only gotten stronger.
I really like how the presenter delivers the details like "open hand, closed fist or chest hit" as differentiating and defining the behavior for baseline data and progress data collection.

I’m struggling running the ABA therapy sessions. I just started working doing ABA therapy and the company is training me. I think that my accent is preventing me to run the sessions efficiently as the children may not understand the words I said. Is that possible or perhaps I’m overthinking?
I have worked with many people in the past that have accents and it has worked just fine. It is actually good for generalization. You might have to do a little more homework if teaching new words to make sure you are pronouncing it as close as possible (and you learn at the same time, win-win). I recommend googling "cambridge dictionary" and using their website to find the words you want to teach, there's a button to hear someone pronounce it. You'll do great! The fact that you are already asking on how to improve is a sign that you'll be an excellent therapist.
After the experience, did your language get improved? I have the same problem and I will start next week. I hope you see my comment.

To improve ABA try to focus on more intrinsic motivation instead of extrinsic motivation because autistic people don’t usually get a lot of satisfaction from extrinsic motivation sometimes and I think instead and try to teach more emotional regulation skills and also try to look at behavior on a more cognitive level instead.

This feels highly manipulative. Why is that child hitting itself? Maybe because it’s over or understimulated. As an autistic person, hitting myself feels good sometimes. People interfering with that isn’t helpful at all. Does the child seem unhappy, by hitting itself? Or maybe because there is something else happening in the first place, that’s why hitting itself is the reaction?
Why is everyone so focussed on behaviour? Our problem is not our behaviour -It’s how people react to it.
Well, I am not going to tell you you're wrong because your opinions are 100% yours! I just wanted to say ABA Therapy is not necessarily wanting to "change behavior", in the clinics I have worked it has majorly been about how we can help that child understand and communicate their emotions and wants, different ways to show those emotions safely, and how to help them become as independent as possible overtime and reach their best potential. If you knew a child that hit their head on the wall, and overtime slowly learned how to ask for a squeeze toy instead when needed. I definitely see that being much more helpful for that child than potentially harming themselves.

How to go about ABA therapy for a 1.5 year old kid ?
ABA is abuse. Please don't.
I admit I'm biased from the horror stories from autistic people who survived ABA, but the description makes me very uncomfortable
In this case a bias is good.
Please everyone consider a different therapy option. If you read actual autistic blogs and comments you will clearly see ABA in ALL forms is abusive and damaging in the long term
Please educate yourself. They may not like it all the time but “Abusive” is a bit dramatic
Sorry if you had any negative experiences with ABA. I don’t doubt it has been done wrong in some spaces, but it’s not the case everywhere. Blessings!

ABA is abuse
Wow. This is torture and goes against healthy child development theories and practices. As a person on the spectrum with an autistic child, I wholeheartedly despise this abusive practice. Holy crap. I had no idea how wrong the neurotypical approach is for autism education. This is so sad and horrible. You have no idea.
May I ask how it is horrible? How would you prefer the programs to be like? What is considered help? Generally these practices are to help individuals with harmful behaviors like hitting as he’s mentioned in the video.
@@plantspit518 A kid isn't born hitting themselves. The behavior of hitting oneself is acquired. The solution isn't to torture the kid into compliance (not hitting themselves), but to identify the cause. ABA is abuse and causes the exact behaviors it claims to treat.
@@borninussr7242 Usually, a clinician wouldn't take a client if there's nothing wrong...so....they were already exhibiting the hitting behaviors beforehand. ABA's whole idea is to identify the cause, or the function, of why a learned behavior continues to occur, and under what antecedent conditions. @@borninussr7242 why would you get behavioral services if you didn't have behavioral issues? Also, Radical Behaviorism, BF Skinner, said even private events are behaviors. Look up Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). Has its roots in ABA and focuses on all the feelings your little heart can handle
Pairing sounds very much like love bombing, and love bombing is part of a typical narcissistic abuse cycle.
Autistics ( such as myself) do not endorse ABA, neurotypical people want ‘normal’ behavior, or what they think is normal.
You do realize that applied behavior analysis is nothing more than glorified dog training?
Replace the word dog every time he says child, and positive reinforcement.
It is the same principle.
I actually made another video specifically about autism and ABA and that is a common misconception. ABA should NOT be centered around what neurotypicals define as normal. ABA should be centered about teaching skills that center around independence such as communication. You can imagine how frustrating it would be to want something but not being able to articulate what you desire. And you are correct about ABA being used for dog training. ABA is a set of tools that can be used in many different settings including a school, work, and business environment. The same principals apply but implemented in different ways with different goals in mind. Thank you for bringing up these thoughts as I'm sure some others may share similar concerns!
@@ABAmadeeasy The only reason ABA is applied to autistics is because they can't say no. Same principles have been applied when they created gay conversion therapy. Somehow, that therapy is no longer in use.
@ussr7242 ABA needs to end there are plenty of Autism Advocates pointing out why it is wrong. I am going through counselling because of repressed memories from going through this. #SayNoToABA .
ABA is abuse. It is a traumatizing, horrible experience. If you care about your children, please do not subject them to this torture. It's disgusting that it's still promoted and encouraged.
May I ask how it is traumatizing? Isn’t that a misconception based on unfortunate past events? Like how in ABA they used to use the electric chair as a form of punishment but how does that apply to the practices of today?
