  • In this video we'll be talking about General Motors' Tuned Port Injection system. This could be found on 1985 through early 90's C4 Corvetts equipped with a 350, and Chevrolet Camaros and Pontiac Firebirds equipped with a 305 from 1985 onward, and 350 cubic inch engines from 1987 until 1991.

It was an amazing experience seeing those back in the day and you could feel the torque

My parents bought a 1993 Olds Cutlass Supreme and even the the 3.1 engine has enough torque to notice being pushed back into the seats. On a test drive as a kid, my mom was used to lethargic malaise era cars where large throttle inputs didn't do much. We drove that Olds and when she stepped on it you could FEEL the torque.

Fantastic system, I was there at Flint V8 engine plant when these things were just debuting. They had a test engine sitting over in a corner for years after production started, I guess they forgot about it, I was tempted to ask if I could have it, they probably would have given it to me as scrap. I recently bought one of these Iroc Camaros with this setup and the thing is decently fast for being a 305, 1989 was my awakening to how enormously powerful FI could be in the right engine as I later drove a full size pickup in 1992, and the thing was just a stump puller, torque monster. Referred to in this video as a "sign of things to come". The 2.8 Liter V6 coupled to a manual in the RS camaros was surprisingly fast too with its MPFI. I had one of those as a commuter car.

I think in the mid 80's, everybody who thought in terms of power was still thinking about carburetors. I believe a lot of that had to do with how underpowered the early EFI system / engine combinations were. It wasn't until the TPI system and the Ford 5.0 Mustangs started to roll out that people said "Wait a second..."

I have a L98 TPI in my 88' GTA, I feel these are great street engines and in their era were good performers. A few mods and a tune can really wake these up.

@@rporestorations they were really expensive in their time, I picked up mine for 3k with only 78k miles in 2017.
It was a killer deal and the car really only needed a full tune up including injectors, refresh the suspension and re paint the hood/replace the rear spoiler. The rest was a good cleaning/cut and buff to get it presentable. I did some old school TPI mods but kept all factory pieces.

Would have made a good truck motor. I can't believe a short runner LT1-style intake was never made and tested, has to be a story on how it was shelved in favor of the long-runner setup that made it to production

I had an 88 IROC with the l98 5.7. It would roast the posi traction tires off the line and bark going into second. Once it got up to 4,500 RPM those beautiful runners would starve the engine for air and it would fall flat on its face. Still a fun car and drive train.

I was at Pontiac back then, this was a good setup at the time, low RPM high torque engine, companies were coming out with larger tubes and lower intake for a sizeable gain, the burnoff relays for that mass air were its downfall

Bosch LH-Jetronic. Take a look at that Tuned Port Injection '85 Corvette V8 and then look at a picture of an '85 Porsche 928S2 engine and you will see the instant similarity. They had the same basic injection system, and the guts of the transmissions were both Borg-Warner.
